Omicron spreads because not all

The CDC Adds Five More
Caribbean Island Destinations
to its Highest Level of Travel
Risk
On Monday, The US Centers for Disease Control
(CDC) added five new Caribbean Islands destinations
to its list of “Level 4” destinations. So far, that is 15
new countries/islands that were added to their list this
week, and 22 last week. Their “Level 4” list now
contains 120 destinations. 80 of those destinations
are from January.
The CDC’s “Level 4” list is a list of countries/islands
that are considered as “high” risk for Covid-19. The
CDC calculates these countries as “high” risk when a
country has 500 cases per 100,000 residents that are
registered in the past 28 days. The 15 countries that
were added to the list this week are: Colombia, Costa
Rica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Guadeloupe, Jamaica,
Kuwait, Mongolia, Niger, Peru, Romania, Saint
Barthelemy, Saint Martin, Tunisia, and the UAE.
The CDC hypothesizes that the large increase of
these cases is due to the spread of the new Omicron
variant and the rise of tourism. The CDC is trying to
cut back and spread awareness of tourism by labeling
these countries as “high” risk so people won’t travel to
them.

Palestinan Authority Demands
Investigation
After the discovery of a mass grave in the Tantura
village, Palestinian Authority calls for the invesitgation
of this massacre by an International commision. It is
reported these are the graves of Palestinains killed by
Zionist gangs in 1948. Palestinians say this is not the
only massacre of Palestinians that took place during
1948.
The Palestinian Authorty ministry says “The crimes of
the occupation did not stop at the year 1948, but are
still continuing in a racist and hateful manner, which
calls for the opening of investigations into these
crimes,”. He continued with “What is required is a
broad international campaign to bring justice to the
Palestinian victims and to punish Israeli officials and
the official Israeli institution that continues to conceal
and cover up the ugliness of these crimes and
massacres.”

The Amazon’s Continued
Descent
Amidst the global pandemic that’s going on, the Amazon rainforest
is still burning in large quantities, deforestation still commences
besides laws and regulations, and has managed to produce more
Co2 than it removes. With COVID being at the forefront of
everyone’s mind, it’s hard to remember one of the world’s biggest
environmental crises that continues to go on. Why has this forest,
with its continued degradation of wildlife and ecosystems alike, yet
to seize this madness? The answers, some new and old, are all facts
that need to be acknowledged whether we like it or not.
The Amazon Rainforest’s decline has started in the early 1970s and
continues to this day, all thanks to its reliable yet diminishing
resources. Primarily, deforestation back then was due to farmers
expanding their lands to grow more crops and make room for their
cattle, with cattle ranching being the leading cause of deforestation
by a landslide. It’s simple: more land leads to more cattle, resulting
in more products (beef, chicken, lamb, etc) being produced. What’s
worse is that most of these practices are legal and don’t collide with
laws and regulations already in place. The food industry’s
prominence over the Amazon rainforest is frightening and a huge
factor in its continued destruction.
Since 1970, there has been an 80.1% decrease in original coverage
of the rainforest with a 22% increase in deforestation just last year.
That’s the equivalent of a state roughly in between the size of
Connecticut and New Hampshire. Relative to the size of the
rainforest it’s tiny, but these changes build up over time. At the pace
it’s headed, the Amazon Rainforest won’t hold up past 2064. This
mass deforestation and wildfires damage the homes of countless
species and indigenous people, pollutes rivers and lakes, degrades
soil, and the list goes on and on. It’s an alarming truth that we have
to be aware of and strive to change, whether it’s as small as
educating others to create permanent changes in said industries

Deposed Malian President Dies at Age
76
On January 16th, former Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta
died at home. His cause of death is still unannounced. He was 76
year old and is survived by his wife Aminata Maïga Keïta, and their
four children.
Keita was elected in 2013 with the promise of fixing national
crises and easing the tensions of citizens. These promises gave
him more than 77 percent of the votes. He was reelected in 2018
for another five-year term because of the support from Malians,
France, and other Western allies. However, as the threat of
Islamist uprising in central Mali grew, Keïta’s popularity saw a quick
decline. The added pressure of the nationwide civil protests, the
coronavirus pandemic, and the failed economy led Keïta to resign
on state television.
“I wish no blood to be shed to keep me in power. I have decided
to step down from office,” he announced. This marked the end of
Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta’s time as the Malian President who
oversaw a period of deep distress in the nation’s history.

Redwood Forest in California is
Returned to Native Tribes
On Tuesday, January 26, the Save the Redwoods
League transferred ownership of the 523-acre
property in Mendocino County to the Intertribal
Sinkyone Wilderness Council, returning the land to
the descendants of native tribes who had been
forcibly evicted from the land by European settlers.
The 10 sovereign tribes will serve as guardians by
protecting and restoring the land. The Save The
Redwoods League hope that tribal stewardship will
help preserve the land.
Originally, the land was the ceremonial grounds of
generations of Indigenous tribes like the Sinkyone.
For more than 175 years, the tribes did not have
access to the sacred land. Now, they are able to
again claim their sacred land. The land, before
known as Adersonia West, will be renamed Tc'ih-
Léh-Dûñ. Hawk Rosales, an Indigenous land
defender and former executive director of the
Intertribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council, talked
about how much the land means to the tribes: “We
have an intergenerational commitment and goal to
protect these lands.”

Experts are Ringing Alarms About Elon
Musk’s Brain Implants
Last week, Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company Neuralink
that is working on developing brain-machine interfaces to
connect humans to computers put out that they are hiring a
clinical trial director to help manage Neuralink’s first cohort of
patients for their first human trials in testing their brain
implants. They’ve already been tested on monkeys and pigs,
and have been deemed successful.
Experts are worrying that Elon Musk is moving too fast with
technology and that society’s not ready yet to be connected to
computers neurologically. Musk started Neuralink back in 2016
in hopes of alleviating certain disabilities, like helping disabled
people control their devices with their brains. Musk hopes for
bigger ambitions later on in the future.He previously outlines
his visions for humans to achieve “symbiosis” with artificial
intelligence in hopes of not getting “left behind” by robots in the
foreseeable future.
Some experts are on par with the idea but worry for the
economy and markets. “These are very niche products—if we’re
really only talking about developing them for paralyzed
individuals—the market is small, the devices are expensive,”
said Dr. L. Syd Johnson, an associate professor in the Center for
Bioethics and Humanities at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Other experts are fed up with business men coming up with
these revolutionary ideas that we are far from achieving to gain
publicity and profit. “With these companies and owners of
companies, they’re kind of showmen,” said Dr. Cabrera, of Penn
State. “They’ll make these hyperbolic claims, and I think that's
dangerous, because I think people sometimes believe it blindly.”

The Upcoming Lunar New Year
On the first day of February, 2022, the Lunar New
Year begins. The Lunar New Year is a holiday that is
celebrated widely by East Asian countries like China,
Vietnam, North and South Korea, and Tibet. Following
the lunar calendar, these countries celebrate the new
year with many traditional foods, family gatherings,
and festivals.
Each year the Lunar New Year is represented by one
of the 12 zodiac animals including the rat, ox, tiger,
rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster,
dog and pig. Collectively, the zodiac animals represent
the passage of time and the cycle of years. 2022 is the
year of the Tiger. The tiger is known as the king of all
beasts in China and has qualities that are associated
with strength, competitiveness, and bravery.
The traditions associated with the Lunar new year is
what makes it so special. Festivals allow for an
increase in business, the holiday allows for family
gatherings, and traditional food is made and shared
throughout the country. For many, the Lunar new
year marks the beginning of a strong and fearless
year.

Human Trafficking Speaker
On Monday, January 24th, speaker Aruna
Manisekaran from the Fishers Health Department,
gave the 10th-12th grade Eman School students a
lecture on Human Trafficking. With the UNICEF
Club’s focus being Human/Child Trafficking for the
month of January, Aruna was requested to come in
and give a short presentation that would raise
awareness on this issue and inform others of its
importance.
During the Lecture, Aruna informed students
about the common tactics of human traffickers,
explaining that many of them target those who are
more vulnerable. Aruna emphasized that human
traffickers can look and act like anything. She listed
the signs of what it might look like for people who
are being trafficked and spoke about what to do
when you suspect someone who is.
With the rise of cases in Human Trafficking, the
lecture was beneficial to students who were not
aware of it and its effect on many victims across
the world. Aligning with UNICEF’s main objectives,
the lecture informed and advocated for Human
Trafficking victims.

schools worldwide. The distinguishing
characteristic of a science fair is that project
entries employ the scientific method to test a
hypothesis.Students present their science project
results in the form of a report, display board,
and/or models that they have created.Science Fair
has been moved to next Monday. This gives
students extra time to prepare for their projects.
Some students however are disappointed in the
delay but it is safe to say the majority of students
feel relieved. With the extra time to perfect their
projects, the school has high hopes for this year’s
science fair.

School Lunch for a School Student
In my 3+ years at Eman School, it’s been an
interesting experience when it comes to the
school lunch and its menu. At 12-o-clock after the
fourth period, we’re greeted with the by-product
and hard work provided by the lunch ladies to give
us a nutritional meal to help us get through the
rest of the school day. While some days we might
be presented with a 10/10 meal, there are some
instances where I would question making home
lunches instead. At the end of the day, I’m always
looking forward to whatever new concoction they
whip up, no matter the results.
Most people eat food without a second thought,
but it’s always key to pay attention to what lunch
you get at Eman School. You might see days where
there’s been a shortage of ingredients, resulting in
simple lunches such as tacos or chicken nuggets,
but there can also be different fruits and
vegetables alongside them. Sides such as berries,
carrots, and fresh fruit are underappreciated in my
opinion and should be given a chance to shine on
their own, maybe by making a lunch based on
them like an acai bowl. Although, the lunch menu
always includes a variety of choices that differ each
day which not only widens the palette but makes
for a well-rounded school diet. It is always a
comforting feeling knowing that the food made for
be thankful for not only the provisions, but the

There is a big debate about if the new vending
machine should have a card reader. Vending
machines will be an important part of the Eman
school lunch option. A vending machine is one of
the good lunch options which is brought to school
with students’ wellbeing in mind.
I believe that the vending machine should have a
card reader. The vending machine is on the high
school campus and most of the students have
cards. By putting a card reader on the vending
machine it is more convenient for students. It also
brings higher earrings from the vending machine.
A higher earring will show the vending machine
prove its worth and be there for a time to come.
