CLASSROOM LABORATORY: ELONGATION OF A SPRING

Objetive: Determine the spring constant of different springs

Instruments:

- Springs
- Bodies with different mass
- Dynamometer
- Tape measure

Procedure:

 Take a spring, hang it from a stand and put a weight on the other side.
 With a tape measure, determine the total length of the spring with the weight holder.
We will call its value the initial length (L o)
 With the dynamometer, determine the weight of the mass you will hang on the spring.
Its value is the force (F)
 Add the mass weight and determine the length (L) again.

Data analysis:

Complete the table bellow and calculate the spring constant of the spring.

Spring Mass Weight= Initial Final Elongation Spring Average

Force length length (ΔL) constant spring
(F) (Lo) (L) (k) constant

Repeat all the process with the second spring.

Conclusion:

Finally, make a conclusion about the relation between the spring constant and the stiffness of
the spring.
