MALEFICENT

Orientation
Maleficent is a 2014 American movie directed by Robert Stromberg. The screenplay was
written by an American screenwriter, playwright, and novelist, Linda Woolverton. The movie is
based on a dark fantasy genre and adapted from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty tale by Charles
Perrault. The starring of this movie is Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley and Elle Fanning as main
characters also Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville in supporting
roles. Released in the United States on May 30, 2014, the movie was produced by Walt Disney
Pictures and Roth Films. Overall, the movie was a successful movie since its visuals, costumes,
and cast’s performance earned praise and awards.

Evaluations
The movie has achieved notable success in technical as well as visual effects. There is a
great wealth of spectacular scenes of the charming Moors, the stunning flying ones of the
protagonist along with the vicious fight at the end of the film. Likewise, a variety of distinctive
costumes is properly used to partly depict the personalities of different characters. The wonderful
soundtrack with haunting rhythms, furthermore, plays an essential part in making the film
smooth and eye-catching as well. The music sets the tone for a lot of things in movies. It helps
tell whether it's a sad or happy moment. For this movie the music was composed by James
Newton Howard. The movie opens with a song called "Maleficent Suite." The song starts out
dark and scary but gradually becomes more peaceful. This song sets the tone of the movie for the
narrator and makes the story look and sound more interesting.

It would be a mistake not to mention the brilliant acting of the actress Angelina Jolie,
whose performance successfully and lively portrays two opposing sides of the iconic villain
Maleficent. Sharlto Copley as King Stefan acts superbly whilst Elle Fanning as Aurora does a
quite dull acting. Nevertheless, the cast still effectively transfers the core message: love is the
most beautiful and powerful thing in the world that can turn a villain to a hero.

Interpretative Recount
The story starts with meeting Maleficent as a child living alone in a tree, orphaned. In
these early stages, Maleficent is confident and gentle. Then the story follows Maleficent's
encounter with Stefan, a boy from the surrounding village belonging to the King, and her young-
adult ventures. Her friendship with Stefan is an untraditional friendship because fairies and
humans are natural enemies in this time. One morning, the King comes against the moors in a
brutally-forceful gesture to win the land for his own; however, it overthrown and dies from his
attacker, Maleficent. Being in the King's inner-circle, Stefan takes it upon himself to kill
Maleficent. His devotion and love for Maleficent thwarts this attempt at betrayal.
Unfortunately, Maleficent wakes from an induced sleep to find herself wingless. At once,
Maleficent turns into a dominating, guarded, and wrathful individual; swearing a vengeance on
Stefan for taking away her wings for personal gain. She manages to obtain a crow, Diaval,
deviating his death from being a meal, and persuading him into being her eyes and ears in the
castle. In the months to follow, Stefan father's a daughter. A majority of the story revolves
around the relationship between Maleficent and Aura, Stefan's daughter. At her christening, Aura
is cursed by Maleficent; on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a
spinning wheel and fall into a sleep like death with only true loves kiss to remove the spell. Aura
grows-up and lives with Knotgrass, Thistlewit, and Flittle, three fairies; however, Maleficent is
ever watchful of the little princess. After a few encounters and observations, Maleficent reveals
herself to Aura and begins to like the girl. Aura learns that Maleficent is the one that cursed her
from childhood, that Stefan is her father, and that the moors are suffering from the onslaught of
attacks from the humans outside of the forest. Aura does meet Phillip, a strapping young prince
that does not free her from the spell. Maleficent learns that Aura escaped her fairy keepers and
returned to her father's castle on the day of her sixteenth year.

The story ends with Maleficent being the one to awaken Aura, removing the curse with
her own love for the girl. In the meantime, a fight breaks-out between Stefan's men and
Maleficent. It results in Maleficent transforming Diaval into a dragon and Aura finding a pair of
wings in a chamber; a moment of truth that it had been Stefan that had brought about all these
shortcomings. Maleficent receives her wings and flees the kingdom, letting Stefan drop to his
death in his last attempt to kill her. Aura becomes Queen and lives in the moors, establishing a
peace between the two races of fairies and humans.

Evaluation Summation
By and large, despite still having some flaws, Maleficent itself provides new perspectives
on things and a wide range of fascinating scenes, all of which make it well worth seeing. I would
have no hesitation in recommending this movie to those who enjoy both highly entertaining films
and to some extend thought provoking.
