STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
Name: HIRRAH REIGNE C. GAGUAN
Section: STEM 11-Charity

PERFORMANCE TASK: Prove the Empirical Formula (68 – 95 – 99.7) or the Three Sigma
Rule.

(You can write your answers in a separate sheet of paper, take a picture and insert it in a
word/pdf file.)
The empirical rule states that for a normal distribution, nearly all of the data will fall within
three standard deviations of the mean. The empirical rule can be broken down into three
parts:
68% of data falls within the first
standard deviation from the mean.

The value enclosed by the two z-

values -1 and 1 corresponds to a 68
percent of the region This can be
demonstrated by taking the value 1
and referencing the Standard Normal
Table. The value of 1.00 is 0.3413, and
as the graph also finishes on a value of
1 from the mean, the next step would
be to add the two numbers. Because
both numbers are equal (we skip the
negative sign of the other 1 because it
just pinpoints its location in the graph),
the result is: 0.3413 + 0.3413 = 0.6826.
Then we convert the answer to percent
and round it to the nearest whole
number, we get 68 percent. As a result,
the area between -1 and 1 is proven to
be 68 percent.
95% fall within two standard
deviations.

The value contained by the two z-

values -2 and 2 correspond to an 95
percent. This can be shown by taking
the value 2 and comparing to the
Standard Normal Table. The value of
2.00 is 0.4772, and as the graph also
finishes on a value of 2 from the mean,
the next step is to sum both numbers.
Because both values are equal (we
discard the negative sign of the other
two because it just pinpoints their place
in the graph), the result is: 0.4772 +
0.4772 = 0.9544. If we convert the
result to percent and round it to the
nearest full number, we get 95 percent.
As a result, it has been demonstrated
that the area between -2 and 2 is 95
percent.
99.7% fall within three standard
deviations.
The value that is encompassed by the
two z-values -3 and 3 equates to an
area of 99.7 percent. This can be
proved by taking the value of 3 and
referring to the Standard Normal
Table. The value of 3.00 is 0.4987 and
since the graph also ends on the value
of 3 from the mean, the next step is to
add both values. Since both values are
equal (we disregard the negative sign
of the other 3 as it only pinpoints its
location in the graph) the result would
be: 0.4987 + 0.4987 = 0.9974.
Converting the result to percent and
rounding it off to the nearest tenths, we
would arrive to 99.7 percent. Thus, it is
proven that the area between -3𝜎 and
3𝜎 is 99.7percent.
