____________________________________________________________________________

Question 1

The information concerning the crystal structure of lithium and copper are given in the table.

Metal Coordination number Number of atoms per unit

cell
Lithium 8 2
Copper 12 4

Based on the information given, answer the following questions:

a) Name the unit cells of Lithium and Copper.
b) Identify how the value of 2 for the net number of atoms in one cell of Lithium is obtained.
(3 marks)

Question 2
CHEMISTRY (CHM 141)

Table below shows the information of 2 different types of crystals.

Crystal Information
Calcium oxide The size of both positive ions and negative ions are very different.
Both ions are packed in triangular arrangement.
Beryllium The total number of atoms per unit cell is 6.
The coordination number is 12.

Identify the answers for the following questions:

i) The type of structure in calcium oxide
ii) The layer arrangement in Beryllium
iii) The hole on which atoms of the third layer are placed in Beryllium.
(4 marks)

Question 3
With reference to NaCI crystal.
i) Name the crystal structure.
ii) Draw and label the unit cell of NaCI crystal.
iii) Calculate the number of atoms in the unit cell.
(6 marks)

Question 4
Description of Crystal I, Crystal II and Crystal III are as given below:
Crystal Description
Crystal I • atoms are arranged in triangular arrangement.
• atoms of the third layer are parallel with atoms in the first layer.

Crystal II • the net number of atoms in a unit cell is 2.

• atoms are not as close to each other as in Crystal I.
Crystal III • hard material but layers of atoms can easily slide over one
another.
• allotrope of carbon.
i) For Crystal I, name the crystal structure, draw and name the type of hole where atoms of
the third layer are placed.
(3 marks)
ii) For Crystal II, draw the unit cell and state the coordination number of the crystal.
(2 marks)
iii) For Crystal III, name the type of crystal and briefly explain why is that the layers of atoms
can easily slide over one another in Crystal III.
(2 marks)
