Activity – MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY and VARIABILITY

1. A survey was conducted to find out the number of hours students spend on the computer in
a day. The table below shows the results.

Numbers of Hours 1 2 3 4 5 6
Number of Students in Class A 2 6 11 7 3 1
Number of Students in Class B 1 4 10 11 3 2

a. Find the mean number of hours and standard deviation for each class

Mean = 5.2

Standard Deviation = 1.98

b. Which class spent more time on the computer?

Class B had more time on the computer because 1, there are more students in the class and
2, the “SH” of class b is higher than the one of class a.
2. The table below shows the number of text messages sent from 30 cellular phones in a day.
Number of Text Messages 0–4 5–9 10 – 14 15 – 19 20 – 24
Frequency 2 8 12 5 3

FORMULAS:
Ungrouped Data
∑ 𝑆𝐻
Mean 𝑥̅ = 𝑁

∑ 𝑆(𝐻− 𝑥̅ )2
Standard Deviation 𝑠= √ 𝑁

Grouped Data
∑ 𝑓𝑥𝑚
Mean 𝑥̅ = 𝑁

∑ 𝑓(𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅ )2
Standard Deviation 𝑠= √ 𝑁

REMINDERS:
1. Rounding off is applicable for final answers. Do not round off the answers for solutions or
values to complete the table.
2. Round off the Mean to the nearest tenths or 1 decimal place.
3. Round off the Standard Deviation to the nearest hundredths or 2 decimal places.
4. For the given ungrouped data, N means total number of students.
5. For the given grouped data, N means total frequency.
