Hewlett Packard (HP) Company

Activity Questions:

1. What is/are the sustainable business practice/s of HP based on the given case?
HP's sustainable business practices include supply chain management and executive
compensation, as the company focuses more on the environmental impact of its products and
has established requirements to drive its environmental and sustainable production network and
supply chain, as well as a low carbon footprint. HP's sustainability strategy aims to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency. Natural resources are used in the
manufacture, transport, and usage of HP goods. They're also keeping track of their carbon and
water footprints and vowing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2. What pillar/s of sustainability is/are being addressed by HP’s business practice/s?

HP Business have been through a lot of obstacles in making its way to success. In response
to these, they were able to formulate effective resolution to solve the challenge. Through their
long journey, they were able to address these pillars to sustain their needs in managing their
company. First is Economic Pillar. In leadership of CEO Mark Hurd, HP Company have been
eliminated more than 15,000 jobs; cutting down costs for research and development; and
attempting to automate consulting services. As a result, HP Company were able to save money
for employee salaries, and research and development expenses. Second is Social Pillar. It is year
2005 when HP Company were experiencing leakage of Information so it’s Board Chairman
Patricia Dunn and CEO Mark Hurd initiates to perform an investigation and have it discussed at a
board of director’s strategy meeting together with the board members. Third and last is the
Environmental Pillar. HP products and solutions is very committed in manufacturing, delivery,
and use of natural resources natural resources. In protecting the planet, HP measures their
environmental footprint across the value chain to prioritize areas for improvemenare also the
first company in the IT industry to publish a full carbon footprint and one of the first to disclose a
complete water footprint and they also aims to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% in
2020 and reduce its global operations’ potable water consumption by 15% in 2025.

3. What function/s of corporate governance is/are present in the case study?

Corporate accountability is visible at HP since everyone on the board of directors, as well

as those in higher levels of management, is held accountable for their actions and choices. It
makes no difference that these individuals have high positions or stakes since, at the end of the
day, what they do matters and, as a result, has an impact on the firm. This may be shown in the
case study in a number of instances. For example, when Board Chairman Patricia Dunn was
forced to resign because she was involved in a spying scandal that harmed the company's
image; when CEO Mark Hurd was forced to resign because of a relationship scandal, despite
leading the company to a higher path and position; or when CEO Leo Apotheker was fired
because he was involved in a spying scandal that harmed the company's image.

4. How will HP resolve its given organizational problem based on the functions of
corporate governance?

In our own opinion after reading this case study the issue there or the main problem of
this HP organizational is ofcourse the leader itself. Who runs the organization or leads the
company and it was shown in case study that we've read it was
clear that the company suffered and faced numerous scandals and problems that were attribute
d to their leader or CEO at the time.
Fortunately, the board members always appeared to come through in the end. These
terrible leaders should be responsible for their actions based on corporate governance because
the company's reputation, position, and performance have all been seriously affected of what
persons doing. The board members should ensure that competent leaders who knows what
they are doing and focus on the company's success and help each members of the company to
inspirations to other. Also board members should ensure that finding good leader not only have
impressive credentials, but also have that good attitude and have patience when confronted
with unusual circumstances. Also they should ensure that everyone in the firm, regardless of
their position or influence, respects the rules and policies so that opportunities do not dry up
and big difficulties are averted.
