CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the method, research instruments, the participants, the data gathering
procedure and the statistical treatment of the data

Research Design
This qualitative research applies the Phenomenological type of research which
enables the researcher to delve into the perceptions, feelings, thoughts, views, responses
and understanding of those people who experienced an interesting phenomenon. 1 It
mainly focuses on the essence of shared experiences by describing and understanding the
subjects’ lived experiences or situations and how it is that they experience what they
experience. It has no concern of any social norms, cultures ,traditions, or preconceived
experiential ideas. According to …. The goal of this study is to analyse the meaning
behind the experiences which tries to identify themes or generalize the perceptions of a
particular phenomenon. A data was gathered from the information provided by the
respondents in the survey questionnaire of Grade 11 students. The study used the
descriptive survey design approach. The descriptive survey design is a a comprehensive
summarization, in everyday terms, of specific events experienced by individuals or
groups of individuals.3 It access information and interprets data for purpose of
clarification. It is really effective and easy to conduct.

Research Method
For the purpose of this research, this study utilized a description method of
research to determine the effects of using gadgets during learning sessions on the
academic performance of the Grade 11 students in SLMCS. It involves of using
questionnaire and it will be distributed to the Grade 11 students to be able to answer the
survey. In collecting data, in order to answer the questions based on the status of the
study which been conducted the study also uses descriptive correlation method since this
study tackled about the effects of using gadgets during learning sessions on the academic
performance of the Grade 11 students which were discussed below.

Research Instrument
The study used questionnaires to survey Grade 11 students for collecting data.
The researchers made the questionnaire based on the effects of using gadgets during
learning sessions on the academic performance of the students. The draft of the
questionnaire was drawn of based on the researchers’ readings, previous studies and
relevant literatures. In the preparation of instrument, the requirements in designing of
good data collection instrument were considered.

The Participants
The participants of the study are the Grade 11 Senior High School Students
enrolled in St. Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon. 10.50% of the population of the
Grade 11 students were chosen. 40 were chosen out of 381 students to the respondents of
the study. Simple Random Sampling specifically Quota Sampling was used in this study.
It is a sampling method of gathering representative data from a group 1. Quota Sampling
is a non-probability sampling technique wherein the assembled sample has the same
proportions of individuals as the entire population with respect to known characteristics,
traits or focused phenomenon. The researchers used the text analysis to determine the
main focused answer of all students who answered the survey. With the use of evaluation,
the researchers determine all the answers of the participants by means of evaluating the
main answers.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researcher use the simplest and systematic way of gathering the data to be
able to finish the study. The first step in which the researcher do before giving the testing
paper is that, the researcher needs to make a request letter then after that, the researcher
needs to check the letter to their subject teacher for accuracy before signing it to the
principal. Upon approval, the researcher retrieves the request letter and sign it to the
principal as well as the subject teacher so that the researchers can be able to conduct a
survey to the 40 respondents of Grade 11 students in SLMCS.
In administering the questionnaires, the researcher used their short time allotted in
their practical research subject to be able to conduct a survey. In giving the
questionnaires, the researchers ask permission to the teacher to conduct a survey and the
students, responses were given enough time to answer the questions in their free time.
After the data gathering, the researchers gathered the questionnaires for tallying the result
by means of qualitative data.
