A Father and his Son

A father and his son were walking from one village to another when
they suddenly heard a voice calling behind them. Turning their gaze in the
direction of the voice calling, they saw a group of students following them.
The father walked fast and the son was left behind with the group of
students. One of the students asks the son to join with them. Another
student persuades the son to come along with them because they will go to
the beach even it is time to go home. The other students waited for the
answer.
The son whispers in a melodious voice. “I think you should go home
first before going to the beach so that your parents know.” The third student
answered with a funny face, “It’s not important to tell them that, we can
decide for ourselves. How about you? Are you scared of your father?” Then
all of them laugh sarcastically. The son answered still in a melodious voice,
“No it’s not like that, I just respect my father because he is my father.” But
the students still laughing sarcastically. The son continued speaking, “Why
are you laughing, it is not a joke. I’m serious, we as a child need to respect
our parents not because they are old, but because they are the reason why
we’re here”. Then, the students still laughing and called a son a girl-
hearted.
After a few minutes of walking, the father noticed that his son is far
behind him. He called his son, “Come here boy, faster, your mother and
siblings are waiting for us.” The students laughed and called him again a
girl-hearted. But instead of getting angry, the son keeps pushing the
students to go home and then he runs away to catch up with his father.

“I heard that the students called you a girl-hearted, why?” the father
started the conversation. “I don’t know, maybe because I did not go with
them and I told them that they need to ask permission from their parents
before going anywhere after school,” the son answered with a canorous
voice.
The father explained to his son that what he did was a wonderful
thing to be treasured. Because anger is not a solution for a cruel one but
being disciplined is an important thing to be remembered.

Self-discipline is important to develop over time, no matter your career

level in the industry. Doing so can help you achieve personal career goals. In
this part, we will discuss what it means to be self-disciplined and to describe
ways for having this trait in your life.

Based from the story, is the son showed self-discipline? If yes, in what way it
is?
___________________________________________________________________________

If you are the son, will you do the same? Why?

If you are one of the students, will you act differently towards the son? Why?

At the end of the story what lesson did the father taught to his son?

What is Self-discipline?

Self-discipline refers to anyone who’s having the right conduct. It is

the ability to control yourself for good purposes. It helps you to live
peacefully, productively and most of all meaningfully.

5
In the psychological literature, self-discipline goes by self-control or
willpower. It is “The ability to suppress responses in the service of a higher
goal and that such a choice is not automatic but rather requires conscious
effort.” (Duckworth & Seligman, 2006)
Additionally, self-discipline is the ability to overcome your weakness
and temptation to quit while in pursuit of a worthy endeavor. It is also the
ability to focus intently on a task or goal with the purpose to achieve a
certain result. Similar to other qualities that might contribute to your overall
success, self-discipline produces sustainable success over time.
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “With self-discipline most anything is
possible.” More recently, Jim Rohm claimed, “Discipline is the bridge
between goals and accomplishment.” And Robert Kiyosaki asserted that
“Confidence comes from discipline and training.” What successful people
have come to understand is that discipline is the key to the achievement of
their goals. They learned how to use discipline in their lives to achieve their
dreams.
And so can you. For students like you, this can mean keeping yourself
focused on assignments or in classes, not getting yourself distracted during
lectures or times of study, and making sure that you’re on track with
deadlines.
Comprehensively, self-discipline is the capacity to control and
motivate yourself, and do what is right. Haile Gebrselassie said that, “Once
you commit, you need the discipline and hard work to get you there.” Because
at the heart of any successful person is self-discipline.

Here are some examples of self-discipline in different situation:

1. When you make sure you get up an hour early before going to school
each day.
2. Refraining from eating too much or from eating certain food because
you know they bad for your health (even though you want them)
3. Refraining from drinking alcohol even your friends persuaded you to
do it.
4. Making yourself take the time required to do things properly.
5. Doing your project, a little bit every day until it’s all finished instead of
waiting until the last minute.

What are the ways to have Self-discipline?

How many unwise desires do you think you resist every day?
Becoming more attuned to when, where and how you exercise self-control.
You can manage/build your behavior a little better using the following ways:

6
1. Develop Your Self-Awareness – it is the best way you can do for having
a self-discipline, being aware of what you do and when you’re doing it. It
is the first way in making better decisions and resisting those that don’t
help you over the long-term.
2. Make Practice a Habit – like any other skills, you’ll need to practice self-
discipline on a daily basis. Be clear how you plan to meet the goals for
which you are responsible.
3. Define You Expectation Clearly – you should know your expectation
from yourself in terms of achieving goals and what do you expect from
others that can help you. Clarifying your expectation of yourself and
others help you to focus your efforts.
4. Set Personal Goals – setting SMART goals that are achievable and
measurable can help you build self-discipline over time by accomplishing
specific related tasks.
5. Time Management – it is perfect way to develop self-discipline. It is the
way of planning and exercising of time spent on specific activities
resulting effectiveness, efficiency and productivity. Plan the day ahead.
6. Respect Others’ Ideas, Principles and Beliefs – give respect to get
respect. Having self-discipline is not complete without knowing respect.
7. Think positively – because positive habits create a positive lifestyle. You
need to recognize both the positive and negative side of a situation.
Instead of feeling hopeless think positively for better state of your mind.
Then, if you are optimistic, you are well-motivated person. Because if you
are well-motivated you have goal-directed behavior for doing something.
8. Reduce feelings such as jealousy and hatred they reduced your
efficiency- These ways do not limit you on how to be disciplined because
we learn differently so the bottom line is YOU on how you want to be as a
person. But it will help you better on how to have a self-discipline.
