Applebee’s International is moving its headquarters and 390 jobs to Kansas City from
Lenexa, the first major counterblow by Missouri since a business-poaching feud began
in earnest more than one year ago in the metropolitan area. The restaurant chain is
relocating to an office building at 8140 Ward Parkway from its current quarters at
11201 Renner Rd. Until recently, the Ward Parkway building had been primarily occu-
pied by once high-flying mortgage company NovaStar Financial. For Applebee’s, its re-
turn to Kansas City, expected to be completed Sept. 30th, is a homecoming of sorts. |

Kentucky’s Gov. Steve Beshear announces that Meaningful Use Technologies LLC, and
Korean-based Arcron Systems Inc. are establishing their U.S. headquarters in a 5,000-
sq. ft. facility in Newport, KY, to better serve customers in North American markets.
Together, the medical information technology firms will create 20 jobs and invest over
$1 million in Campbell County’s Northern Kentucky region. Newport hugs the Ohio
River and is situated just south of its much-larger sister river city, Cincinnati, OH. This
Blue Grass State location will be the first U.S. office for both companies. |

The South Carolina Senate voted shortly after midnight Friday to compromise on a
deal to bring Amazon.com Inc. and 2,000 promised jobs to the state, cutting off debate
on hundreds of amendments from opponents. The unanimous voice vote sent the
amended deal back to the House, which voted 97-20 last week to give Amazon a five-
year exemption from collecting sales tax from South Carolina’s online customers in ex-
change for the full-time jobs with health benefits and at least $125 million in capital

350 Jobs for SC

CertusBank plans to open a corporate headquarters in Greenville and create 350 new
jobs, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said Wednesday. The bank will be one of three
major tenants in a new office complex called One Greenville. Law firm Haynsworth
Sinkler Boyd also will have offices in the building and retailer Anthropologie will have a
store there. “Not only is this a great example of how South Carolina is attracting invest-
ment and jobs, but we also celebrate the fact that a company with local connections is
putting down roots in our state,” Haley said in a news release announcing the new
project. One Greenville spokesman Barry Finkelstein with public relations firm Erwin-
Penland says the first portion of the project will cost about $50 million with about
175,000 square feet of office and retail space. Construction is expected to start this
summer and should be completed by year-end 2012. A second $50 million tower is part
of the plan but a time frame for that phase of the project has not been set. |

An Illinois-based manufacturer says it will establish a corrugated cardboard sheet-


feeder plant in Conyers, bringing 50 jobs to the area.Corrugated Supplies Co. an-
nounced Thursday it will put the plant in the former Solo Cup distribution center. The
company says plant operations are expected to begin in September. Glenn Sears, ex-
ecutive director of the Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council, said the deal
to bring Corrugated Supplies to Conyers has been in the works for more than two years.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, along with local and state officials, announced Wednesday
that Carlisle Transportation Products will locate its newly created company’s corporate
headquarters in Franklin. The company will occupy 28,000 square feet of office space
in the McEwen Building, an office building near the intersection of West McEwen
Drive and Mallory Lane in Franklin, according to a news release from the state of Ten-
nessee. About 100 people will be employed at the facility. Carlisle Transportation Prod-
ucts is owned by parent company Carlisle Companies Inc. and was recently formed
when the firm’s existing tire and wheel subsidiary and power transmission subsidiary
were merged. Carlisle Transportation Products currently has manufacturing operations
in Jackson and Clinton, Tenn., as well as multiple manufacturing and distribution cen-

Progressive Corp. plans to hire 125 people by the end of June for its Mayfield call cen-
ter, the second round of hirings for the company in less than a year. Another 260 peo-
ple were employed at the company’s call centers in Mentor and Mayfield in the past

answer the phones and help customers with their policy questions,” said spokeswoman

HOMECARE provider Care and Share Associates (CASA) is looking to more than dou-
ble its number of centres and create up to 300 jobs after the North East business re-
ceived a £200,000 investment. The employee-owned social enterprise, which is head-
quartered in Sunderland, has received the cash injection from London-based investor
Bridges Ventures, through its Social Entrepreneurs Fund. The firm, which provides do-
miciliary care for the elderly as well as adults with varying disabilities, will use the cash
to open between four and six support centres around the country over the next three

900 Jobs for Scotland

ONLINE retail giant Amazon is to create 900 jobs in Edinburgh in a new centre that
will act as a hub for customer queries about its popular ebook reader, the Kindle. The
company will build a customer service centre at Waverley Gate in Edinburgh, employ-
ing 500 permanent and 400 temporary workers. It brings the total number of posts
Amazon has announced in Scotland this year to 1650. The facility will handle customer
queries, including technical support for MP3 players and the popular Amazon Kindle,
which uses wireless connectivity to allow users to download and read books, newspa-
pers and magazines. Allan Lyall, vice-president of European operations and customer
service, said Edinburgh was an “outstanding location, providing us with access to a
highly skilled workforce that will help us to achieve the high standards of customer ser-

Ontario is helping Warren Industries Ltd., a Concord-based auto parts manufacturer,


create 66 jobs bringing the company’s workforce to more than 200 people. The com-
pany will build new production facilities, specialize in vehicle door, hood and trunk
hinge manufacturing, and increase efficiency with improvements to automation,
stamping, packaging and transportation. These changes will allow the company to be-
come a leader in the industry and attract business from automakers around the world.
“Supporting growth that increases opportunities for Ontario companies will help the
province to continue to turn the corner. This investment transfers work to Ontario
from overseas and will provide good jobs and tremendous benefits for our province’s

8,900 Jobs for Quebec

ArcelorMittal, today announces the expansion of its Mont-Wright mining complex and
additional construction at Port-Cartier. The investment will allow ArcelorMittal Mines
Canada to increase its annual production of iron ore concentrate from 14 million tons
to 24 million tons by 2013. AMMC is also evaluating increasing its production of iron
ore pellets from 9.2 million tons to 18.5 million tons. The scheme represents a total in-
vestment of CAN$2.1 billion dollars that will create 8,000 jobs during construction and
more than 900 permanent jobs once completed. Commenting, Peter Kukielski,
Member of the Group Management Board and Head of Mining for ArcelorMittal, said
“ArcelorMittal Mines Canada is a flagship mining asset for the Group, which offers
considerable opportunity for expansion. We have already announced our intention to
grow our iron ore production to 100 million tonnes by 2015 and this expansion forms

A company in Consett specialising in chilled ready meals is to create 150 new jobs. In-
ternational Cuisine Ltd, based on the Hownsgill Industrial Park, will start recruiting
this month. The firm said positions to be filled ranged from management to shop floor
roles, in all areas of the operation. It said “rapidly growing demand” had helped create
the positions. International Cuisine Limited currently employs 579 staff. |

200 Jobs for Russia

Up to 200 new jobs are expected to be created after a County Durham engineering firm
won a £50m contract to supply automotive parts to Russia. Peterlee-based GT Group
said it hoped to boost its workforce from 300 to 500 after the deal to supply parts for
new diesel engines with Russian giant GAZ. GAZ is one of Russia’s largest manufactur-
ers of cars, buses, lorries and agricultural vehicles. GT Group said additional jobs

WATER giant United Utilities is hiring 200 staff to help customers struggling with
their bills. Until now, people were forced to contact the firm through a call centre in the
Philippines, but the company has decided to bring the work back here. The move came
as it warned it is getting tough with customers who refuse to pay up after kissing good-
bye to £31million of debts in the last year. United, which covers the north west of Eng-
