Why the Name

Garden Reach O

A continuous straight stretch of river between two bends is called a 'Reach'. In the bygone era of
sailing vessels, a 'Reach' is normally chosen for building a Port. This was so because, a sailing vessel
moving with the wind on her sails, can take advantage of the bend in the river to 'Reach the Shore'.
'Garden Reach' is the area located adjoining the straight stretch of River Hooghly between the bend
at Kidderpore and the bend at Badartala.

H. E. A. Cotton tells us in his book 'Calcutta Old and New' (first
published in 1909) “.....crossing the Hastings Bridge and
proceeding to the southward, we arrive at Garden Reach, the
oldest and best known suburb. The river bank, for a distance of
two miles, is lined by beautiful houses with large compounds.
Erected between the years 1768 and1780, these were formerly the
residences of fashionable Calcutta Society”.

In 1916 the interests of RSNC and BISN were merged. With the construction of new
docks at Kidderpore by the Calcutta Port Authority and more ships calling at Calcutta
port, it was decided to discontinue the operations at BISN's Union Docks progressively
and develop the workshop at Garden Reach into a full-fledged Ship Repairing Unit.

In 1926, the amalgamation of the two workshops was finally effected and managed as a
partnership concern. In course of time, this P&O Group became the main operator for
India's coastal passenger traffic. Its services linked India with the Persian Gulf, the Far
East, the East & South Africa.

Garden Reach Works Ltd. at Calcutta was developed by the P&O Group to maintain
their ships in Indian waters. For many years, the P&O Group also held a controlling
interest in Mogul Line Ltd.

On 26 February 1934, Garden Reach Workshop was incorporated as a Joint Stock

Company and was Registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1913 under the name
and style of GARDEN REACH WORKSHOPS LIMITED (GRW). From 1934 to 1960
“GRW Ltd.” was managed by M/S Macneill & Barry Ltd, the Managing Agents of the
P&O Group.

Fleet Tanker
GRSE is a pioneer shipyard with many firsts to its credit, like construction of INS
Ajay, the first ever indigenous warship for Indian Navy, Construction of CGS Rajhans,
the first Patrol Vessel built for Indian Coast Guard, Construction of the first
indigenous Landing Ship, Construction of the first indigenous Survey Vessel etc. In
addition to these honours, GRSE also has the distinction of being the only Indian
Shipyard to have built a Fleet Replenishment Tanker indigenously, INS Aditya (GRSE
Yard 3008).

The production of Fleet Tanker commenced on 04 September 1987, with plate cutting in the
Logotome Machine in the Plate Preparation Shop at 61 Park. The ship was launched by Smt
Binu Shekhawat, wife of Admiral VS Shekhawat, Chief of Naval Staff on 15 November 1993.

INS Aditya, the largest indigenously built Fleet Replenishment Tanker was delivered to the
Indian Navy on 21 March 2000. The ship was commissioned by Shri Harin Pathak, Hon'ble
Raksha Rajya Mantri at Vishakhapatnam on 03 April 2000.

The Replenishment Tanker primarily designed as a Fleet Support Ship is capable of

replenishing warships at sea with all types of fuel (including aviation fuel), ammunition, fresh
water, dry provisions etc. In addition to replenishment of these essentials to fleet ships, INS
Aditya is also capable of playing a supportive role by providing Workshop facilities, Hospital
facilities etc.

Multi Role Frigates –
Coming of Age
After successful construction of major weapon platforms like P-25A
Missile Corvettes, GRSE was ready to reach the next level of warship
construction. Accordingly the contract for construction of three
Brahmaputra Class Frigates under Project 16A was awarded to GRSE.

These Brahmaputra Class Guided Missile Frigates are front line warships
packed with medium range surface to surface and surface to air missiles,
guns and anti-submarine weapons & sensors. They are equipped with state of
the art early warning, navigation and fire control radars and a sophisticated
electronic warfare system. The ships are capable of carrying two Seaking
Helicopters.

The First of Class P-16A Guided Missile Frigate “INS Brahmaputra” (GRSE Yard
3009) was launched by Dr (Smt) C Sarojini Reddy, wife of Sri KV Raghunatha
Reddy, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal on 26 January 1994. The ship was
commissioned by Sri George Fernandez, Hon'ble Raksha Mantri on 14
April 2000.

The second Frigate under Project 16A INS Betwa was launched by Smt Niloufer
Bhagwat, wife of Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, Chief of Naval Staff on 26 February
1998. The ship was commissioned at GRSE on 07 July 2004, by Admiral
Madhavendra Singh, Chief of Naval Staff.

Smt Venita Kumar, wife of Admiral Sushil Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff
launched the third and last Frigate under Project 16A, INS Beas (Yard No 3011) on
28 November 2000. The 3rd P16A Frigate INS Beas, was commissioned by
Admiral Arun Prakash, Chief of Naval Staff, on 11 July 2005.

P-1 A Stealth Frigate –
Bright Future Becons
Based on the long association and contribution of GRSE towards indigenous warship design
and construction programme of the Indian Navy, the Government of India and Indian Navy
have awarded the contract for construction of three advanced stealth Frigates under Project
Contract Signing of P-17A
17-A to GRSE. It was a historic moment for GRSE when this prestigious contract was inked
on 20 February 2015. The order worth Rs. 19,200 Crore is the largest ever order won by the
company.

A total of seven (07) stealth Frigates are slated to be built under Project 17-A programme.
Four (04) ships would be built at MDSL and three (03) ships would be built at GRSE.

These ships are planned to be built at the new Integrated Shipbuilding Facility created under
modernisation. Latest Modular Shipbuilding Technology would be deployed to build these
advanced state of the art stealth Frigates. The Contract envisages that, these ships would be
built at a reduced timeframe of 5 to 5.5 years, using Integrated Construction processes.

P-17A Project poses an immense challenge as well as a great opportunity for GRSE. GRSE is
certainly poised for further growth, when construction of Frigates under P-17A gets
underway in 2018.

It is indeed a great honour and rare opportunity to visit GRSE which is a leading shipyard of India. The first
Noval craft INS Ajay was built by this shipyard which later became Bangladesh Navy's first ship handed over
by IN to BN in 1972. So, we have an old history connected with GRSE. During our liberation was in Aug,

war successfully. I am looking forward to have joint collaboration in making warships for BN in future.
