 Education:-
Yusuf Hamied was born into a religiously diverse family. His father, Khwaja Abdul
Hamied, founder of Cipla, was an Indian Muslim, while his mother Farida was a
Russophone Jew.

Born in Lithuania, Yusuf was raised up in Bombay. He went to Cathedral and John
Cannon School. He was fondly referred to as, Yuku by his close friends. He further
pursued higher education in Organic Chemistry, under the guidance of Alexander Todd, a
recipient of Nobel Prize in the field of Chemistry. Subsequently, at the age of 23,he
completed his PhD in the same subject from Christ College, Cambridge.

 Work Experience :-
 In 1960, Dr. Hamied joined Cipla limited as an officer-in-charge of research and
development.
 He had to take permission from the government to work in his father's company, due to
the prevailing 'British raj'.
 His initial salary was set at 1500 for 3 years, and he received his first salary only after
working for a full one year.
 Once permitted to work, he realized that every major drug he wanted to manufacture
was covered by patents, export was nearly impossible, and the domestic market largely
belonged to the MNCs.
 Hence, with the agenda of changing India's patent laws; he formed the Indian Drug
Manufactures Association in 1961.
 Finally, in 1972, their efforts paid off, by providing the Indian Pharma industry the legal
freedom to manufacture and market any drug required in the country.
 This major development acted out as a boon to the Indian pharma industry.
 Today, the country is a major supplier of API and formulations, along with highest
number of FDA certified manufacturing plants.
 Cipla, under Yusuf's leadership played a major role in creating substitutes for imports,
changing it into a self sufficient enterprise and placing it at the position of high quality
exports.

 Membership :-

Cipla sells active pharmaceutical ingredients to other manufacturers as well as


pharmaceutical and personal care products,[20] including escitalopram oxalate (anti-
depressant), lamivudine, and fluticasone propionate.[4] They are the world's largest
manufacturer of antiretroviral drugs.[20][21]
In July 2020, the company announced the introduction of Gilead
Sciences' remdesivir under the brand name CIPREMI in India after reaching a voluntary
licensing agreement with parent company[22] and DCGI approval for "restricted
emergency use" in COVID-19 treatment of critical confirmed patients.[23][24]

conducted by Blue Bytes,[38] a leading Media Analytics firm in association with TRA Research,
[39] a brand insights organization (both a part of the Comniscient Group).
