WORK PROCEDURE
FOR
1.0 PURPOSE:
To describe the procedure for carrying out soil resistivity survey at ROU for
temporary and permanent cathodic protection on Pipeline Project and collect
additional data along ROU and provide adequate quality assurance / control of
workmanship and inspection at site.
2.0 SCOPE:
Procedure covers the method for carrying out soil resistivity survey at proposed
ground bed locations on pipeline by four pin Wenner method. During TCP,
collecting additional data along the ROW required for interference mitigation.
Materials: Steel spikes and flexible cable, hammer, measuring tape etc.
4.0 PROCEDURE
The soil resistivity readings are usually taken by using the 4 pin Wenner
method.
4.1 Mark positions of four spikes at a distance of 'A' meters on the selected location.
(A represents by spacing between electrodes).
4.2 Drive four spikes in the ground such that there is proper contact with the ground
to a depth A/20.
4.3 Connect the outer spikes to the current terminals C1 and C2 of the meter
4.4 Connect the inner spikes to the potential terminals P1 and P2 of the meter
4.5 Allow the current to flow between terminals C1 and C2 so that the potential drop
in the soil is picked up by terminals P1 and P2.
4.6 The value of the soil resistance is obtained by adjusting the knob in such a way
that null balance is achieved.
4.7 The average of soil resistivity upto depth 'A ' is then given by
"r" = 2*22/7*A*R
Where
"r" Is Resistivity in Ohm-cm
4.8 General guidelines for carrying out the soil resistivity survey:
4.9 Using the above 4 - pin Wenner method, soil resistivity could be recorded for
pipelines / piping at every one kilometer and at both sides of major road and
major river crossings at the following intervals.
Measurement shall be done at every twenty five meters along the length of
proposed anode bed for approx. length 150 M.
The soil sampling for soil chemical analysis at every 10Km shall be taken at depth
of 1.5m.
5.1 Route and types of Foreign Service / pipelines in and around or crossing the
ROW.
5.2 Diameter, wall thickness, pressure, soil cover etc. of the foreign pipeline.
5.3 Voltage rating, phases and sheathing details of parallel running or crossing cables
with ROW.
5.4 Foreign pipeline coating details.
5.5 Details of existing cathodic protection systems protecting the services including
rating and location of grounds bed test station locations and connection schemes
etc. Where pipeline is likely to pass close to any existing ground bed, necessary
anode-bed potential gradient survey shall be carried out.
5.6 Information on existing and proposed DC/AC power sources and system in the
vicinity of
the entire ROW.
5.7 Crossing and parallel running of electrified and non-electrified railway tracks
along with details of operating voltage and type (AC/DC).
5.8 Crossing or parallel running of any H.T. AC/DC overhead line with in approx. 25
m from ROW along with details of voltage rating, fault level etc.
5.9 Any other relevant information that may be needed in designing and
implementing of proper cathodic protection scheme for the proposed pipeline.
5.10 Prepare sketch for each location with various distances with respect to pipeline
and enclosed.
6.0 PRECAUTIONS:
6.1 While fixing steel prods in the ground care should be taken to avoid fixing of
prods on stones / rocks.
6.2 In order to get the true reading the measurements should be taken away from
foreign metallic underground structures and earth current areas.
7.0 DOCUMENTATION:
In case of any conflict between the requirements of this procedure and that of the above
referred specifications the requirements of the latter shall govern, until and unless
specific intention is meant.
