Bilbao is a city in northern Spain. For most of the 20th century,

it wasn't known for anything exciting. Not many tourists visited
the city, and when companies there began to close, many people
moved to other cities for new jobs.
In 1991, the population of Bilbao was decreasing, and the city
was losing money. The city officials needed a way to bring
people to the city, so they decided to bring an amazing museum
to Bilbao. The officials of Bilbao asked the Guggenheim to put a
museum in their city. The Guggenheim officials liked the idea
immediately, and in 1992, a location for the new museum was
chosen in the city.
Architect Frank Gehry presented his idea for the new
Guggenheim Museum in 1993. His design was selected, and work
began eight months later. When the new Guggenheim was
completed, huge numbers of tourists started coming to Bilbao.
Many of them were interested in seeing the new building's design
because it was very different from the conservative and
traditional styles of the past.
Soon, Bilbao needed a new airport. The number of daily
flights to the city increased, and the old airport was too small. In
addition, there weren't enough hotels for all the tourists, so
several large hotels were built near the museum. In only a few
years, as the Guggenheim Museum created new jobs for the
people of the city, the number of people living in Bilbao
increased. Now many more people have definitely heard of
Bilbao.

27. Write two paragraphs about your favorite style of painting. Answer the following
questions:
What is your favorite style of painting?
Who are some of the artists that work in this style?
Where have you seen paintings in this style?
Why do you prefer this style of painting?
Do you think this style is more difficult to create than other styles? Why or why not?

People since the ice age have made paintings on cave walls, the art is important because we can understand how
our ancestress survived and what were their customs. I honestly don’t relish painting things but I really admire
the art. I like several styles of painting, for example, still life, portrait, abstract painting and drawing.

My favorite artist is Van Gogh and my favorite painting is “Starry Night” is one of the most recognized pieces of
art in the world. In my opinion it’s a magnificent piece of art. Starry Night was painted in 1889. I have seen
paintings in this style in museums of Europe in virtual exhibitions. I prefer abstract painting because it is a form
of expression of artistic feelings that dispenses with all figuration and proposes a new reality different from the
natural one. I think that this style is more difficult to create because the artist must have a wide imagination and
create works that go beyond the natural and normal.

28. Write two paragraphs about a famous artist from your country. Answer the following
questions:
Who is this famous artist?
From where in your country does he/she come from?
What style of art does he/she create?
What are some of the more famous artworks he/she has created?
Why do people in your country like his/her style of art?
What is your opinion about this artist’s work?
Which are your favorite artworks? Why?

First of all, I would like to say that in Honduras there are few artists who have been recognized for their paintings.
The most recognized artists are from the 19th century. Although the artistic field had little interest, many men
and women decided to follow their dreams of making art. I must say that I admire Teresa Fortín, she was a
Honduran painter framed within the “Honduran naïf”. It is a primitive and everyday style of life of the peoples of
Honduras.

The more famous artworks of Fortín is “Hoja Liquidámbar de plata”, it is considered a traditional and primitive
work due to its use of reused cardboard and paper, pigments made with earth and other elements. I think she
was a very creative woman who, before limited resources, created very interesting paintings.
