A CRITICAL REVIEW

(HoLKs) Home-Lab Kits Utilizing Arduino Science Journal App: Enhancing Scientific
Attitude in a New Normal Grade 7 Classroom of Biñan Secondary School of Applied
Academic is an action research conducted by Mr. Michael V. Vinluan (T-III) of Biñan
Secondary School of Applied Academics. This study was conducted to solve a classic
problem in science education which is the non-participation to scientific inquiry. It was
mentioned that learner’s participation in scientific activity may lack as they will be given less
opportunities to discover learning thru hands-on laboratory activities due to the current
situation of New Normal Education.

The study determined if the Home-Lab Kits was able to enhance scientific attitudes
of selected students of Biñan Secondary School of Applied Academics. Home-Lab Kits will
serve as an enrichment learning kit to support the provided self- learning modules (SLMs). It
was composed of three (3) hands-on laboratory activities in Grade 7 Physics, activity sheets
and safety measure provisions all contained in a plastic box. For the measuring device in the
four activities, students utilized the Arduino Science Journal Mobile Application.

The study employed one group quasi-experimental research design. To gather data
for the study, the resear her utilized selected Grade 7 students in Biñan. The respondents of
the study were selected purposively from the sections being handled by the teacher
researcher. Initial assessment was delivered to participants through Google Form. The
responses were tabulated and analyzed using statistical treatments. Utilization of HoLKs

were conducted and was distributed for usage. Then final assessment was conducted and it
was determined by the result of Initial assessment. The result of assessment says that
students before the implementation of HoLKs were not motivated in learning science
concepts. However, after the implementation of HoLKs as supplementary activity shows that
there are more students responses agree in statements where they would enjoy studying
science. Moreover, all students agree that they may not make great discoveries but working
in science would be fun.

Talking about the structure of the whole research I must commend the researcher
for having simple yet logical study. The background and Ratioonale are logical and clear, he
mentioned why it is necessary for study and how it would help the target recipients when it
is finally implemented which is very essential to identify because it is the core of every
study. Theoritical background provided enough support to a theory of the research study.
Related study are enough to support the calims but not as to really deepen the purpose of
the study which is still bearable knowing that it is an Action Research not a Basic Research.
Literature and studies are also logically presented, considering that it is an action research
there are only few of them.

The methodology strategy was commendable knowing the current situation of being
in a health crisis. He utilizes the available method to undertake when face to face is no
longer possible. Google Form was perfect for the situation like pandemic to reach out to
respondents and also to utilize new technology in administering assessments and
successfully gather the data. Ethical consideration was also observed in dealing with
participants. Research tools were validated before it used to avoid mismatching. Result of
the study as it is shown were presented clear and logical and based on the research
question, there's a use of valid statistical analysis to maintain the truthfulness of the result.
Overall, the action research was smartly crafted, taking care all the small detail that could
affect its validity and reliability.
