Fitting an Electronic Speedo from a V6/Turbo Cavalier

If your ABS ECU has 25 pins (Under Bonnet ECU built into the ABS unit), then sorted connect the Blue/Red wire from the
Speedo to Pin 19 of the ABS ECU (Also Blue/Red)
NB: 25 pin ABS ECUs have 4 speed outputs for Traction control, 1 of which is used as the Speedo signal These were fitted to all
Cavalier/Calibra V6s, and Cavalier/Calibra Turbo /Astra GSI C20XE from 1994,

If you have a 15 pin ABS ECU then you have a problem.

This is the Output from an ABS sensor.

As you can see it's about 2V p-p here about 15mS per cycle, this was spinning a rear wheel by hand.
The Amplitude, and frequency varies according to the wheel speed.

The Cavalier Electronic Speedo needs at least 4V P-P to operate so some electronics is required.

Connecting the Speedo directly to the ABS Sensor would work from about 30 mph, but may load the sensor too much and bring
up the ABS light.
This is the Circuit I made up to amplify the ABS signal.

An messy prototype

The production model above used an early Vauxhall Brown 5 pin relay, which made removing the relay part easy, and removal
of the centre pin left an ideal location for the opamp.

I've recently had problems with a number of Amplifiers not working in car.
I've managed to track it down to the output offset being too high.
the last Batch of 741s I bought were from 3 or 4 manufacturers and of them, only 1 type worked correctly.
An output offset of 1.6V on the good chips worked, but 2.0V on the others did not.
I've found a far better chip now, the CA3130E (0.4 V offset) but Maplins don't stock it, so I bought a tube from ebay.
The pinout for the CA3130E is the same as the 741.

Here a later production model with the CA3130

1 * QL22Y 75p LM741 Operational Amplifier CA3130, wherever you can get them.
3 * M10K 7p ea. 10K Ohm Resistor
1 * M11K 7p ea. 11K Ohm Resistor
1 * RA52G 8p 470nF Ceramic Capacitor.
N.B I have now tested 47nF up to 470nF in a variety of different types of capacitor and they all work fine

4 or 5 pin relay from a Scrap yard £neg.

741 Pin Out

I have been asked if I make these up by a number of people, and yes I do from time to time.
The early brown relays aren’t so easy o get these days, the later type don’t dismantle in the same way so no use.
I did make a dozen or them in May 09 when I’d collected enough relays to make it worthwhile.

If you can’t make one yourself then I may have some in stock.

NB: If you don’t have ABS then you can fit a rear ABS hub or front CV joint and a sensor to prvide a speed signal.
You will need 29 tooth (1994 on) for the Cavalier V6 electronic clocks.

NB:
13273989 62 37 236 CONTROL UNIT, IMPULSE SENDER SIGNAL CONVERTER (EXCEPT ABS) Z16XE

Is what Vauxhall use to do the same job on AstraG, CorsaC and Meriva without ABS.

They are based around the TS3702M Dual comparator and are far more complicated than my amplifiers.

Wiring one of these is:

15 - Ignition

31 - Ground

IN1 - One side of the ABS sensor

IN2 - Other side of the ABS sensor

OUT - Speed signal to Blue/Red Wire.
