Expressing Interest and Surprise
Listening is a skill that we can all benefit from improving. The way to improve your
listening skills is to practice “active listening”. Active Listening means giving full
attention to the speaker and fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just
passively hearing the message of the speaker. A better listener can help avoid conflicts
and misunderstandings. A good listener also enhances his or her ability to persuade,
influence and negotiate, which are necessary for workplace success.

To be an active listener you need to let the other person know that you are listening to
what he or she is saying by showing interest in or surprise at what your partner is
talking about. Normally, our voice is higher and louder when we’re very interested.

The Detective Game
My wallet is stolen! I remember my wallet had been kept in the classroom drawer.
Afterwards, I went out for lunch. It was around 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm when I came back to the
classroom, and it disappeared. I can’t believed that my wallet along with my credit cards and a
sum of 50,000 THB are all gone. Who stoled it?

Investigate all suspects as best as you can to find the thief. And then report the statements
that make you believe that he or she is the thief.

Example
Investigator: What were you doing at that time?
Suspect: I was going to have lunch.
Investigator: Who were you with?
Suspect: I was alone.
