Hypertension: - A condition in which the force of the blood against the
artery walls is too high.
Antihypertensive: - Are a class of drugs that are used to treat hypertension
Ex. Rauwolfia

RAUWOLFIA

Synonyms
 
Sarpagandha, Chandrika; Chootachand; Indian snake root.
 
Biological Source
 
Rauwolfia consists of dried roots of Rauwolfia serpentina Benth., belonging to
family Apocynaceae.

Chemical Constituents
 
1) Rauwolfia contains about 0.7–2.4% total alkaloidal bases from which
more than 80 alkaloids have been isolated.

2) The important alkaloids isolated from the drug are


Reserpine,
Rescinnamine,
Psi-reserpine,
Rescidine,
Raubescine
Deserpidine.
3) The other alkaloidal components are
Ajmaline,
Ajmalinine,
Ajmalicine
Serpentine,
Serpentinine,
Tetrahydroreserpine,
Raubasine,
Reserpinine,
Isoajamaline
Yohambinine.

4) The other substances present are phytosterols, fatty acids, unsaturated


alcohols and sugars.

Uses: -
• Rauwolfia is used in the treatment of systolic hypertension.

• It also used in certain neuropsychiatric disorders.

• Ajmalicine is isolated from rauwolfia which is used in the treatment of


circulatory disease.

• It has the property of hypotensive and tranquilizer (tranquilizer is a drug which


treat anxiety, fear, tension, disturbances of the mind)

• It is also used in anxiety condition

• It is used as sedative (Sedatives are the medication that slows down your brain activity)

• Its roots have the property of increase the uterine contraction.

• It is also used in the treatment of intestinal disorders and
