Dysentery: - infection of the intestines resulting in severe diarrhoea with the
presence of blood and mucus in the faeces
Antidysenteric: - Drugs used in the treatment of dysentery is known as
Antidysenteric drug

IPECAC

Synonyms
 
Ipecacuanha, Brazilian Ipecac
 
Biological Source
 
Ipecac consists of the dried root or rhizome of
 Cephaelis ipecacuanha,
Cephaelis acuminata
family Rubiaceae

Chemical Constituents
 
1) Ipecac root contains 2–3% of total alkaloids
2) Emetine
3) cephaeline 
4) psychotrine 
5) psychotrine methyl ether.
6) Other chemical constituent such as monoterpenoid isoquinoline
glucosides including ipecoside, alangiside are also present.

Chemical Test of Emetine


 
 Powdered drug (0.5 g) is mixed with HCl (20 ml) and water (5 ml),
filtered and to the filtrate add potassium chloride (0.01) is added. If
emetine is present, a yellow colour develops which on standing for 1 hour
gradually changes to red.
Uses
1) used as an expectorant
2) in the treatment of amoebic dysentery
3) in large doses used as emetic
4) emetine is used as antitumor
5) ipecac syrup is used as antidote because of its emetic properties
