Topic : Defining the Practice of the Medical Technology
Name: Jan Micah Umengan
Section: Sec 20

Essay: Give at least 5 laboratory personnel and define their role in the laboratory. What is the role of
the medical technologists during the COVID-19 pandemic? Why are they called the unsung heroes of
the pandemic? Explain your answer. A box is provided for your explanation. Add as much box in the
table as you would need.

Pathologists are responsible when it comes to the diagnosis of disease through running a

series of tests of the tissue, blood, and the other fluids of the body. They are also responsible

with the biopsy results, Pap tests, which are done to look for pre cancers, and other biological

samples. Pathologists can work as Anatomic Pathologists or Clinical Pathology.

Phlebotomist, otherwise called phlebotomy technicians, are the one who is works with the

patients. They draw blood from the patients through skin puncture or venepuncture which will

be then used to run necessary laboratory tests.

Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientists are in-

charge of communicating test results with the pathologist. They are also highly involved with

the examination of bodily fluids under the microscope.

There are also more specific types of laboratory personnels such as Cytogenist that examine

blood and tissue specimens to see if there are any chromosomal abnormalities.

Histotechnologists, prepares tissue specimens by performing a special preparation to the

sample. This enables them to look for any evidence of a disease.

When the pandemic striked, medical technologist played a huge role into identifying the virus

in the body. With their role in diagnostic testing, they immensely helped in understanding the

spread of the virus and the disease. Many of the medical technologist have not only been the

working behind the curtains of a laboratory reading producing results of RT-PCR tests,, but

they are also now involved in the getting of specimen and testing people for COVID-19

All medical workers are considered as unsung heroes, they work tirelessly everyday, even

before the pandemic began. And it saddens me that many medical workers here working in

the Philippines, who were once students, paid and spent so much for them to get to where

they are right now only for them to be paid the bare minimum.

The government should find a way for medical workers to be paid better. Not only because

they need it, but because they deserve this.
