Glasgow Wrestling Club brings home a State Title!

It was a monumental weekend
for the Glasgow Wrestling Club
at State AAU Folkstyle Wrestling
Tournament held in the MetraPark
in Billings March 18-20.
After coming up just a ½
point short of the Large Team Girls
State Championship in 2021, the
Highlander Girls came out with
intensity and WON the 2022 Large
Team AAU State Championship!! Overall for the Large Team State
This year’s Girls tournament
featured 54 youth wrestling clubs
and 302 total Girls.
GWC also swept the “10-
man Championship” in the Girls
Tournament winning the Inaugural
Walt Egged Award.
Not to be outdone. The
Highlander Boys finished 2nd
Championship at State AAU! The
Boys tournament featured 74 youth
wrestling clubs and 1,180 total boys.
GWC also finished 2nd overall for
the famous Bobby McKinley “10-

The 1970s were good for Malta

NOTE: in Monday's article concerning the successful Saco
Panthers of the early 1970s, not only did they place 2nd in
1971, they also placed 3rd in 1970. It was brought to our
attention that it was Rocky Tollefson, not Randy Tollefson,
who scored 75 points in the three games at State in 1971.
Thanks for the tip, Brien (former teammate of Rocky). And
for a bonus, what is Brien's last name? Hint: He and his wife
Karla reside in Glasgow.
The 3M Company was dominant in the 1970s. Coach
Bill Ryan a had put together a team that would dominate in
boys basketball. The Mighty Malta Mustangs, 3M Company,
won a pair of Class B championships.
Malta won back-to-back championships in 1971-72.
Duane Walker and Craig Stiles were All-State playersfor the
Mustngs. Malta beat Conrad 72-59 for the 1971 crown with
Walker netting 22 points. Ron Iverson led Conrad with 21.
Malta opened the tournament with a 95-61 win over
Huntley Project with WAlker scoring 23 points. He also had
23 in a 66-53 win over Plentywood. Gregg Abenroth had 24
points for Plentywood.
The Mustangs had a few other prominent names that
stand out today — Dwayne Simanton, Dick Mavencamp,
Mervin Bishop, and Bill Cole. Those players all had sons that
played either for Malta, Dodson or Whitewater.
The Mustangs were greeted by SEVEN miles of cars
upon the arrival of the “3 M Co."!
Probably the best game of that tournament was the
consolation where Red Lodge slipped past Fairview 83-78 in
four overtimes. Red Lodge broke the all-time record for most
points in a state tournament with 328. Jay Bonogofsky scored
88 points in four games for the Redskins.
Fairview had beaten Red Lodge 72-69 in the opening
round. The Redskins rebounded with wins over Eureka, 86-
72, and Plentywood, 90-69.
Cole and Bishop led the Mustangs to the 972 title. That
year the Mustangs had to defeat Medicine Lake, 82-61. Cole
and Bishop had 19 points each in that game, while Bruce
Smith had 19 for the Honkers The trio were All-State.
Malta opened by edging Missoula Loyola 62-61 with
Cole leading with 21 points. Malta then thumped Lodge
Grass, 82-46 in the semifinals with Bishop scoring 30 points.
Lake whipped Eureka 93-74 with Smith netting 36 points and
slipped past Shelby, 65-57, Smith had 20 points.
Lodge Grass finished third with a 74-68 win over Loyola.
The Indians beat Eureka 92-85 in a morning loser out game
despite a 40-point outburst from Mike Holder.
Malta was a member of the Northern B. The Eastern B
had Nashua, Wolf Point, Poplar, Plentywood, Fairview, Circle
and Baker. Malta went through the season with only one loss,
that was in Poplar where the Indians snapped the Mustangs
two-year winning streak.
Medicine Lake won the B title in 1975 with a 52-47 win
over Miles City Sacred Heart. The Shamrocks had beaten
the Honkers three times during the season. One win may
have came in the divisional championship. The Honkers had
defeated Three Forks 71-56 with Rod Smith scoring 26 points.
They followed that with a 60-44 victory against St. Ignatius
with Brett Leibach netting 26 points.
Mick Durham of Three Forks was named MVP, scoring
122 points in four games. The wolves finished third. Durham
played for Montana State and later served as the head coach of
the Bobcats. He is currently the men’s coach at MSU-Billings.
Plentywood captured the title in 1978 with a 73-47
win over Big Timber with Tim Marsh netting 22 points. The
Wildcats also beat Chester, 76-48, with Craig Guenther scoring
20 points. He followed that with 24 points in a 64-54 win over
Roundup. Guenther was the MVP of the tournament.
Scobey won its first championship in 1979 when
the Spartans were in Class B. They beat conference rival
Plentywood, 69-58 with Dan Danelson scoring 32 points
and Gerry Veis 23. Guenther had 22 points for Plentywood.,
which had victories over Darby, 77-57, and Roundup, 71-56.
Danelson had 24 and Boos 20 in a 96-63 win over St.
Labre. Boos had 21 in a 75-55 win over Three Forks. Danelson,
a 6-foot-5 post player averaged 25 points a game and was the
MVP of the tournament. Scobey finished the season with a
23-1 record. The loss was to Class A Sidney.
Scobey probably has the best program in Montana,
especially in the 2000’s. The Spartans are always right on top
or near the top when the regular season is over. They have
had numerous district championships, divisional titles and
a few state championships, most recently going back-to-
back in 2020-21 which includes the longest boys' basketball
game-winning streak record (57) in Montana. It was broken
by Lustre Christian this past season on December 18th. The
streak began on Friday, March 8, 2019 at MetraPark Arena in
Billings.
