CHEM 1120 – Engineering Chemistry and Material Science

PROJECT
Instructor: Dr. E. S. UMDU Due Date: May 15, 2018
Notes: For preparing the Project, follow the procedure distributed in the class. In all calculations, clearly and explicitly indicate
units and any required unit conversions. W1rite your statements and assumptions them clearly.

Wind turbines are subject to extremely complex loads, which

requires attention in their design operation and maintenance.
As an energy system engineer, you are responsible for material
selection for several components of a wind energy conversion
site considering production processes. Components, their
dimensions & selection criteria, and your targets are given in
Table 1 and 2. In your report, state your reasoning,
assumptions and comparison of at least 3 materials for each
component.

Table 1: Wind turbine characteristics

Nominal Power 2,300 kW
Rotor diameter 101 m
Blade length 49 m
Average cross-sectional area of blade shear web 1.2 m2
Hub height 80 m
