Designer Francis Cayouette joined our bamboo-trip from the

start and made some new discoveries. “When we use bamboo
smart, according to its natural qualities, we can design shapes
that are difficult to achieve with other materials.”

Bending shapes with flexible bamboo

Francis and the team used bamboo slats – thin layers of
bamboo glued together in different dimensions. Thanks to the
long fibre, bamboo is more flexible and easier to bend than

What is bamboo? Strong, flexible and one of the world's fastest growing plants –
bamboo has many uses that make it an excellent renewable
material. It’s a type of grass and usually grows without the need for
fertilizers or irrigation. After being harvested, it grows new shoots
that are ready for harvesting after 4-6 years. At IKEA we use bamboo

for items like furniture, bathroom decor, baskets and lamps – and
we are constantly exploring more areas of use for this versatile

Form design process

Swaying bamboo becomes timeless Did you know that bamboo is actually a grass? After growing for
some years, it becomes as hard as wood and at the same time
furniture stronger and easier to bend than most types of wood. So, we
headed out on a creative excursion to make the most out of its
unique qualities rather than copying wood. VOXLÖV is the first
result, a timeless table, and a chair just as flexible and soft as
swaying bamboo – a comfortable place where good moments last
longer.
