Answer the following questions:

1) Why did Rizal leave Ghent for Marseilles?


- On October 18, 1891, Rizal travelled from Ghent to Marseilles on the S.S
Melbourne. Differences in political opinion with M.H. were the major grounds for
his departure. del Pilar's intention to be the leader of the Propaganda movement

But, before leaving for Hong Kong, he informed del Pilar that he lamented that he
would no longer be able to publish pieces for La Solidaridad, despite the fact that
his political views differed from del Pilar's.

2) Describe the Rizal''s Life while he was in Hong Kong?


- Dr. Rizal’s name became a by-world in the field of Ophthalmology. He also a
General Practitioner. Rizal supported himself by operating an eye clinic on Hong
Kong Island. He also authored the La Liga Filipina (Philippine League)
constitution, which inspired the revolutionary party that would eventually lead the
country's fight for independence from Spain.

3) Who was the kind Portuguese Ophthalmologist who helped Rizal to gain
recognition in the field of opthalmic science?
- His old friend Jose M. Basa and other Filipino citizens greeted
him warmly when he arrived in Hong Kong on November 20,
1891. He promptly proceeded into the profession of medicine to
make a living after a few days. Dr. Lorenzo P. Marquez, a
Portuguese ophthalmologist, became Rizal's buddy and
assisted him in gaining a large number of patients. A friend and
admirer who helped him to build up a wide clientele. He
successfully operated on his mother's left eye so that she was
able to read and write again.

4) What were the nationalities of Rizal’s patients in the British colony?


- British, Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, Koreans, and Americans were among
Rizal's patients in the British colony.
5) Why did Dr.Ariston Bautista Lin from Paris send him a congratulatory note
accompanied by a book on Diagnostic Pathology?
- Dr. Ariston Bautista Lin gave him a note of congratulations as well as a book on
Diagnostic Pathology by Dr. H. Virchow and another medical book by Mesnichock
called Traite Diagnostique.

6) How did Dr.Germiniano de Ocampo,an accomplished Filipino opthalmologist


describe Rizal as an opthalmic surgeon?
- A distinguished Filipino ophthalmologist, Dr. Geminiano de Ocampo said that Rizal
possessed all the qualities and potential that an ideal ophthalmologist would have .
Rizal had the makings of a brilliant ophthalmic surgeon. "He had all the qual ities
that would make an ideal ophthalmic surgeon – a keen and analytical intellect,
lightness of touch and artistry of a painter, courage and imperturbability, a broad
and deep knowledge of medicine and ophthalmology, and last but not least, he
had been properly and adequately trained by master ophthalmic surgeons," said
Dr. Geminiano de Ocampo, a distinguished Filipino ophthalmologist.

7) What do you think why his family joined him in Hong Kong?
- To spend Christmas in Hong Kong with his family. He was overjoyed when his
father, brother, and Silvestre Ubaldo (his brother-in-law) arrived in Hong Kong just
before Christmas in 1891. His mother and sisters Lucia, Josefa, and Trinidad
came not long after. Don Francisco, Doa Teodora, Jose, Josefa, Lucia, and
Trinidad. Paciano, Don Francisco, Doa Teodora, Jose, Josefa, Lucia, and
Trinidad. He wrote to Blumentritt on January 31, 1892, recalling their happy
existence in Hong Kong: "Here we are all living together, my parents, sisters, and
brother in peace and far from the persecutions they faced in the Philippines." They
are ecstatic about the English administration."

8) Why did Rizal plan Filipino colonization in Borneo?


- He intended to transfer landless Filipino families to the wealthy British -controlled
island and establish a Filipino colony there. Rizal was supposed to be considering
transferring his family to North Borneo, where he planned to build a Filipino
community centered toward agriculture with himself as its head, according to a
letter sent to Ferdinand Blumentritt dated February 23, 1892.
9) What was the reason why his brother_in_law, Manuel Hidalgo opposed the plan?
- He believed that leaving the Philippines was unnecessary, especially considering
the great sacrifices they had made for the country. Rizal's in-law Manuel Hidalgo
was opposed to the idea. Given the sacrifices they had made for the nation, he
stated that there was no reason to leave the Philippines. Only after all other
attempts at guaranteeing the country's welfare had failed could they consider
settling in Borneo as a last resort.

10) Enumerate the important aims of the La Liga Filipina?

La Liga Filipina's goals are as follows:

a) The Philippines' independence from Spain;


b) Put an end to the abuses perpetrated by Spanish friars on indigenous peoples.
c) To integrate the entire archipelago into a single community in which Filipinos and
Spaniards are treated equally.
d) In every need and circumstance, mutual protection is provided.
e) Defend yourself from all forms of violence and injustice.
f) Instruction, agriculture, and trade are all encouraged.
