Bedrock Quality
Bridon’s century long commitment to attaining the
highest level of quality in the manufacture of wire
and rope has provided a strong foundation on
which our customers have built their successes.
As we reach new horizons in rope technology to
satisfy ever greater engineering challenges, we
will maintain our vigilance, methodically checking
every key stage of the production process to
ensure that Bridon continues to be synonymous
with the highest quality wire & rope.
We know that the quality of the wire used in the manufacture of
high performance rope and cable is critical to producing
products that can handle the extreme duties and environments
which are becoming increasingly common in Oil & Gas,
Mining, Fishing and Structural applications.
This is why Bridon manufacture the wire used in our ropes
under carefully controlled conditions. This way we know that
quality is built into our products right from the start.
It’s not just the quality of steel wire we are obsessed with, as
new material technology has been utilised over the decades by
Bridon to push the limits of rope performance to new heights,
our focus on quality has expanded to cover synthetic rope
components and fibre ropes as well.
When we say bedrock quality we mean it.

Fibre Cores
For most applications ‘Fibrefilm’ polypropylene is used
although natural fibres are still available.
The advantages of man-made fibre cores are:
• Reduction of internal corrosion due to non-absorption
of moisture
• Ability to withstand mild acids and alkalis
• Resistance to rotting
Steel Cores
Steel cores comprise an independent wire rope (IWRC) or in
the case of small ropes, a wire strand (WSC). Such cores
prove advantageous in severe working conditions involving low
factors of safety, high operating speeds, wide fleet angles and
are more resistant to crushing on drums and pulleys. The steel
core provides better support for the outer strands, so that the
rope retains its shape, resulting in a more effective distribution
of stress in the individual wires.
Coatings
Zinc Coated Wire Ropes – Galvanising
Zinc coatings provide sacrificial protection to the underlying
steel wire for protection against corrosion where the rope is
exposed to corrosive agents – salt, water, moisture,
weather etc.
Various coat weights of zinc are available for particular
application; Bridon is ready to advise on the alternative
procedures for achieving corrosion protection of wire rope
appropriate to the particular environment and manner of
usage.

Strength
The responsibility for determining the minimum strength of a
rope for use in a given system rests with the manufacturer of the
machine, appliance, or lifting equipment. As part of this process
the manufacturer of the machine, appliance or lifting equipment
will need to be aware of any local regulations, standards or
codes of practice which might govern the design factor of the
rope (often referred to nowadays as the coefficient of utilisation),
and other factors which might influence the design of sheaves
and drums, the shape of the groove profiles and corresponding
radius, the drum pitch and the angle of fleet, all of which have
an effect on rope performance.
Once the strength (referred to as minimum breaking force or
minimum breaking load) of the rope has been determined it is
then necessary to consider which type of rope will be suitable
for the intended duty. It is important therefore for the designer
to be fully aware of the properties, characteristics and
limitations on use of the many different kinds of steel wire
ropes which are available.
Resistance to Rotation
It is important to determine whether there is a requirement to
use a low rotation or rotation resistant rope. Such ropes are
often referred to as multi - strand ropes.
Six or eight strand rope constructions are usually selected
unless load rotation on a single part system or “cabling”
on a multi - part reeving system are likely to cause
operational problems.
When loaded, steel wire ropes will generate:
• “Torque” if both ends are fixed
• “Turn” if one end is unrestrained
Torque
When both ends of a rope are fixed, the applied force
generates “torque” at the fixing points.

Non Dyform wire rope on adjacent drum laps can cause point
contact and accelerated wear.
Selection of a Dyform product will reduce abrasion through
improved contact conditions.
Abrasion Resistance vs
Bending Fatigue Resistance
When choosing a rope for a specific application it is often
necessary to reach a balance between the two important rope
characteristics of abrasion resistance and the resistance to
bending fatigue. An established method of determining the
best construction for the rope for the particular operating
conditions is by use of the “X- Chart”. By referring to this chart
when selecting a rope, the mid-point of the “X” comes closest

Crush Resistance
In multi - layer coiling applications where there is more than
one layer of rope on the drum it is essential to install the rope
with some back tension. Bridon recommends a minimum
installation tension of between 2.5% and 10% of the minimum
breaking force of the rope. If this is not achieved, or in certain
applications where high pressure on underlying rope layers is
inevitable e.g. a boom hoist rope raising a boom from the
horizontal position, severe crushing damage can be caused to
underlying layers.
Corrosion resistance
If the wire rope is to be used in a corrosive environment then a
galvanised coating is recommended. If corrosion is not a
significant issue then a bright rope can be selected.
Where moisture can penetrate the rope and attack the core,
plastic impregnation (PI) can be considered.
In order to minimise the effects of corrosion it is important to
select a wire rope with a suitable manufacturing lubricant.
Further advantages can be gained by lubricating the rope
regularly whilst it is in service.
Rope Extension
If rope extension is critical refer to technical data on
pages 30 & 31.

3 Strand
3 strand is the oldest and simplest rope
construction, consisting of 3 twisted strands
laid together. 3 strand ropes are hard wearing
and easily spliced.
6 strand
A 6 strand rope consists of 6 twisted strands
laid around a central twisted core. A common
construction found in wire ropes, 6 strand has
a high degree of performance on winches and
offers excellent shape retention.
Multiplait
Multiplait rope consists of 8 strands plaited in
pairs, each pair passing over one pair and
under the next. 4 ‘S’ and 4 ‘Z’ twisted strands
make Multiplait a torque balanced
construction. It is easily terminated and the
twisted strands offer good resistance to
abrasion.
12 Strand
12 strand ropes consist of 6 ‘S’ and 6 ‘Z’
strands. Two plaiting configurations are used:
1 strand passing over 2 strands and under 2
strands (Steelite 12) or 2 strands passing over
2 strands and under 2 strands. 12 strand is
torque balanced and its round profile provides
excellent abrasion resistance due to greater
surface contact. A 12 strand construction
offers higher strengths over conventional
constructions and in either plaiting
configurations the construction is torque
balanced.
Superline
Superline consists of a protective braided
cover containing a number of load bearing
cores. Since the cores are primarily tensile
strength members their design can be
optimised for Superline construction. Superline
cores are usually 3, 6 or 12 strand
constructions. A range of cover designs are
available each displaying individual
characteristics for differing application
situations. Superline is the most strength
efficient construction. In standard multiple 3-
strand and 12-strand cores the construction is
torque balanced.

Tensile Strength
Strengths are determined on new ropes under laboratory
conditions according to Bridons’ QA25 quality procedures.
Ropes can be supplied and tested to a number of international
quality standards including EN 919, US Mil Specifications and
Cordage Institute specifications.
Weight
Rope mass is determined by weighing a rope sample that has
been measured at a reference load.
For most ropes this is calculated as:
Reference Load (kg) = D2/8
Where D = Rope diameter (mm)

For use in floating production mooring systems the minimum breaking loads (MBL) are
for cables with a drawn galvanised (Z class) finish which gives corrosion protection for
upto 6 years. For corrosion protection upto 10 years the cables are final galvanised (A
class). In this case the minimum breaking loads will be reduced by approximately 2%.

Structural Strand
Construction and Applications
A structural strand is a static tension member designed to
transmit both dead and live loads between two or more fixed
points. Typical applications include suspension and cable stayed
bridges, suspended roof structures, radio and television mast
cables. Minimum design requirements for these applications
generally include relatively long service life expectancy, high axial
stiffness and high breaking load efficiency.

Corrosion Protection
Class A galvanised wires ranging from 4 to 7mm diameter are
typical in structural strand products, resulting in a relatively
small surface area exposed to the environment. The corrosion
life of structural cable products is therefore substantially
improved when compared with working ropes comprising of
large numbers of small diameter wires with a correspondingly
high steel surface area.
Wires are available heavy galvanised or Galfan® coated. The
coating is applied by the hot dip process under factory
Prestressing
By cyclically loading the strand at our works the construction
stretch is removed resulting in a strand that behaves elastically.
This is necessary when limited take up facilities are available
on the structure. Having removed the construction stretch, unit
length tolerances of ± 3mm can be achieved by loading the
strand to the working load and making, with allowance being
made for temperature variation. The maximum working loads
that can currently be applied on any unit length of strand is
450 Tonnes.
End Terminations
British Standard sockets are not suitable for application with
structural strands. The large wire diameters employed require
the embedded length of the wires to be increased to achieve
the specified strand minimum breaking load. Galvanised
structural strand sockets are designed by BRIDON to suit both
the requirements of the specific strand construction and the
application at site. Generally all sockets are supplied fitted to
the strand at our works with either zinc alloy or resin.
Other:
• Tension Fabric Structures
• Main Stays
• Flare Stack Stays
The most versatile of all structural cable types.
A standard range is available from 13mm diameter, utilising high
tensile wires, with selective stock. The high breaking strength,
high modulus, god strength/weight ratio and good tension-
tension fatigue performance make the spiral strand an excellent
cable to design into your structure. The profiled surface of the
strand lends itself to clamping and plastic coating.
Spiral Strands consist of large diameter galvanised round wires
helically spun together. The wires are stranded in one or more
layers, mainly in opposite directions, to the required diameters.
Figures shown are for guidance purposes only. For details specific to your requirement
please contact Bridon.
• Alternative sizes and constructions are available to suit individual applications.
• Minimising the number of different strand diameters can optimise costs.
• All Stylite® sockets are suitable for use with Locked Coil Strand.
• Swaged sockets are not suitable for use with Locked Coil Strand.
• Strands with internal blocking material add 3% to nominal metallic mass.
Other:
• Tension Fabric Structures
• Mast Stays
• Flare Stack Stays
The closed construction (layers of ‘z’ shaped wires) give this
cable type a resistance to deformation with the highest axial
stiffness properties. The smooth exterior surface provides a
high resistance to specific pressures. Locked coil has a proven
tension-tension fatigue performance.
Locked coil strand consist of a centre of one or more layers of
large diameter galvanised round wires helically spun together.
Covering this centre are one or more layers of large diameter
galvanised shaped wires, mainly in opposite directions, to the
required diameter.

Crosby Open Swaged Socket
S-501
Forged from special bar quality carbon steel, suitable for cold forming.
Swage Socket terminations have an efficiency rating of 100% based on
the catalogue strength of wire rope.
Hardness controlled by spheroidize annealing.
Stamp for identification after swaging without concern for fractures
(as per directions in National Swaging Brochure).
Swage sockets incorporate a reduced machined area of the shank
which is equivalent to the proper "After Swage" dimension. Before
swaging, this provides for an obvious visual difference in the shank
diameter. After swaging, a uniform shank diameter is created allowing
for a QUIC-CHECK® and permanent visual inspection opportunity.
Designed to quickly determine whether the socket has been through the
swaging operation and assist in field inspections, it does not eliminate
the need to perform standard production inspections which include
gauging for the proper "After Swage" dimensions or proof loading.
U.S. Patent 5,152,630 and foreign equivalents.
NOTE: S-501 Swage Sockets are recommended for use with 6 x 19 or
6 x 37, IPS or XIP (EIP), XXIP (EEIP), RRL, FC or IWRC wire rope.
294 Terminations
Before using any National Swage fitting with any other type lay,
construction or grade of wire rope, it is recommended that the
termination be destructive tested and documented to prove the
adequacy of the assembly to be manufactured.
In accordance with ANSI B30.9, all slings terminated with swage sockets
shall be proof loaded.*

Crosby Closed Swaged
Socket S-502
Basket is cast steel.
Wedge socket terminations have an efficiency rating of 80% based on the
catalogue strength of XXIP wire rope.
Crosby products meet or exceed all requirements of ASME B30.26
including identification, ductility, design factor, proof load and
temperature requirements. Importantly, Crosby products meet other
critical performance requirements including fatigue life, impact properties
and material traceability, not addressed by ASME B30.26.
Individually magnetic particle inspected.
Pin diameter and jaw opening allows wedge and socket to be used in
conjuction with open swage and spelter sockets.
Secures the tail or "dead end" of the wire rope to the wedge, thus
eliminates loss or "Punch out" of the wedge.
Eliminates the need for an extra piece of rope, and is easily installed.
The TERMINATOR™ wedge eliminates the potential breaking off of the tail
due to fatigue.
The tail, which is secured by the base of the clip and the wedge, is left
undeformed and available for reuse.
Incorporates Crosby’s patented QUIC-CHECK® "Go" and "No-Go"
feature cast into the wedge. The proper size rope is determined when the
following criteria are met:

Care in Use
Storage
Ropes should be stored, where possible under deck or under
a suitable cover. The area should be clean, dry and cool out of
direct sunlight. Rope should be stored off the ground, to allow
adequate ventilation, and away from metal walls or steam
pipes. Never store rope on concrete or dirty floors, or drag
over rough ground - dirt and grit picked up by the rope can
work into the strands cutting the inside fibres. Keep away from
chemicals of all types. In the case of long term storage used
ropes should be hosed down with fresh water to reduce salt
crystals that can affect the life and efficiency of the ropes.
Handling
When a rope is supplied in a coil it should always be un-coiled
from the inside so the first turn comes from the bottom in a
counterclockwise direction. If a rope is supplied on a reel this
must be allowed to freely rotate on a central pin or pipe so that
the rope can be drawn off the top layer. Never take rope from a
reel lying on its side.
Braided ropes can not be kinked or hockled, however, twist
can be imparted into the ropes in service. Excessive twist can
cause an imbalance between the right and left hand strands
and should therefore be removed as soon as possible by
counter-rotating the rope when it is relaxed. The best method
for storing a braided rope is in a figure of eight fashion.
Rope Safety
Never stand in line with a rope under tension. If a rope fails it
can recoil with sufficient force to cause serious injury or even
death. Ensure all end terminations are adequate to take shock
loads. Use correct safety factors. Remember to de-rate rope
strengths for incorrect end fitting and wear.

Rope Length (metres) = (A+B)xAxCxπx10

Eye Splices
The length of an eye in a rope should be a minimum of three
times, and prefereably five times, the diameter of the item
around which it is to be passed. This will ensure that the angle
between the two legs of the eye will not cause a tearing action
at the throat of the eye. For instance if the eye of a mooring line
is passing around a 600mm diameter bollard then the eye
should be a minimum of 1.8 metres and preferably 3 metres.
Retiring Ropes
Apart from rejecting your rope when obviously damaged, it is
wise to establish lifetimes of your rope within the parameters of
the use for which it was selected. This will allow you to retire
your rope on a regular scheduled basis, provided of course,
that your conditions of usage remain unchanged. Remember
to re-establish your discard criteria if changing rope type, rope
material or rope breaking load. Safety of life and property is the
prime consideration. If in doubt ask Bridon for
recommendations.

General
The following instructions and guidance, along with those
provided by the supplier or manufacturer of the equipment or
machinery on which the rope is to be used and applicable
standards including EN 12385-3 “Steel wire ropes – Safety –
Information for use and maintenance”, should be read,
understood and followed. Failure to do so could result in
harmful and damaging consequences.
A ‘Warning’ statement (signified by the symbol ) indicates a
potential hazardous situation that could put at risk the safety or
health of those persons within the vicinity of the rope and its
associated equipment if the instructions are not followed. In
addition, rope performance may suffer, adding, unnecessarily,
to operational costs.
Record and maintain details of any corrective action that is
taken as part of the on-going maintenance schedule and make
this information available to the appointed rope inspector prior
to examination of the rope.
Wire ropes removed from service when no longer suitable for
their intended use should be disposed of safely and in
accordance with local legislation and where possible ensure
that the rope cannot be re-used. Used wire rope must not be
re-used on other applications, the original manufacturer’s
certification only applies to the new, un-used wire rope.
Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn
when handling, installing, inspecting, examining or working
with wire rope.
2.2 Make sure that the rope does not come into direct
contact with anything that is likely to cause damage to the
rope, such as the arm of a fork lift truck, wire rope or
chain sling, hook, etc.
WARNING
2.5 Slings should not be placed through the body of the reel
or the shaft hole. Incorrect lifting of reels may result in
unsafe operation, potential injury and damage to
product.Slings should not be placed through the body of
the reel or the shaft hole. Incorrect lifting of reels may
result in unsafe operation, potential injury and damage to
product.
2.6 Do not lift a reel by its flanges or by a sling that cradles
the rope on the reel.
2.7 Damage to rope may occur if pressure is exerted during
lifting. Ensure rope does not contact lifting forks.
WARNING
2.11 Care must be taken when handling reels to keep them
under control at all times as there is potential injury to
personnel, product and equipment.
4. Installation
WARNING
3.6 Failure to comply with these recommendations may result
in the rope becoming contaminated with harmful
materials and foreign debris. These contaminants can
induce corrosion and render the rope unsafe for use.
3.7 If supplied on a reel, the whole package may be
supported on a simple frame or cradle that is located on
the ground and is capable of supporting the total mass of
rope and reel.
WARNING
3.8 Under no circumstances should the reel be lifted with the
aid of the cradle, unless the cradle has been specifically
designed and clearly identified that it may be used for
that purpose.
3.9 Rotate the reel periodically during long periods of
storage, particularly in warm environments and climates,
to prevent the migration of lubricant from the rope.
3.10 Inspect the rope in storage periodically and, when
necessary, apply a suitable rope dressing which is
compatible with the manufacturing lubricant. Contact the
rope supplier or Bridon and/or follow the original
equipment manufacturers instruction manual for
guidance on recommended products or types of rope
dressings, methods of application and equipment
necessary to apply the dressing.
WARNING
3.11 Failure to apply the correct rope dressing may render the
original manufacturing lubricant ineffective and reduce
rope performance.
3.12 Make sure that the rope is protected in such a manner
that it will not be exposed to any accidental damage
either during storage or when placing the rope in, or
taking the rope out of storage.
3.13 We would recommend that the rope is thoroughly
inspected after prolonged periods by a competent person
prior to use. Please contact Bridon for further advice on
limitations to wire rope storage.

5.5 Ensure that the reel stand is safely positioned and ensure
personnel stay clear of the working area as the stand/reel
could move forward causing injury.
WARNING
5.7 If the reel of rope has been transported whilst laid on its
flange side, the individual wraps of rope on the reel may
have become loose and moved down towards the lower
flange. Therefore when preparing for installation, ensure the
running end taken from the supply reel is not cross wrapped
and that any slack rope on the reel is monitored during
installation to ensure it does not cause a problem.
5.8 Position the reel stand/equipment such that the fleet angle
during installation is limited to 1.5° and in a position to limit
the number of changes of direction the rope has to make.

WARNING
Applying excessive tension to rope when spooling
from supply reels may cause damage to the reel and
rope, which can render the rope unusable and cause
potential injury.
5.13 When using pulleys or sheaves to aid installation, where
possible avoid the use of small diameters, if this is not
possible, maintain a bend radius of at least 6 times the
rope diameter for stranded ropes. Where the rope may
touch the ground, timber battens should be placed at
intervals to prevent the rope from dragging through water
or over sharp edges, which could destroy the protective
coatings, induce turn or damage the rope.
5.14 For deep shaft mining applications, stranded ropes must
not be passed around pulleys or sheaves of less than 40
times the nominal rope diameter.
5.15 If a loop forms in the rope during installation, make sure
that it does not tighten to form a kink; otherwise the rope
may have to be discarded. could release excessive turn
from the new rope particularly if significant back tension is
applied.

WARNING
5.30 Never attach a Right hand lay rope to a Left hand lay
rope, as this will allow the ropes to untwist together.
5.31 Monitor the rope as it is being carefully and slowly pulled
into the system and make sure that it is not obstructed by
any part of the structure or mechanism (e.g. rope guard
over a sheave) that may cause the rope to free itself from
its temporary attachments.

WARNING
5.36 Failure of the Becket eye could result in injury to
personnel and damage to both the rope and equipment.
5.37 When spooling rope on to a plain or smooth drum, it is
essential that the first (bottom) layer of rope is installed
correctly as this layer provides the grooving for any
subsequent layer of rope wound over the top of it. The
rope wraps should be installed under tension (see 5.22)
uniformly avoiding any gaps between the wraps as shown
below. A soft hammer or piece of wood may be used to
knock the rope together during installation to ensure they
are tight; however excessive force should be avoided.
Any gaps left at the ends should be spread out evenly
over the width of the drum using soft packing to prevent
subsequent movement.
5.38 Once installed correctly this bottom layer should therefore
not be unwound.

5.46 Ensure that the end of the new rope has been securely
anchored to the winch drum before applying tension.
5.47 When spooling rope on to a winch drum it is necessary,
particularly when multi-layer coiling, to apply a back
tension to the rope, to ensure that the wraps of rope are
tightly wound.
5.48 Generally a back tension of between 2 ½% to 5% of the
ropes minimum breaking force, which equates to a
tension of 12.5% to 25% of the Working Load Limit (WLL)
for rope operating at a factor of utilisation of 5 will assist
in overcoming any tendency of the rope to cut through
underlying layers of rope. For factors less than 5, it may
be necessary to increase the back tension.
5.49 Higher rope tension generally increases resistance to
crushing and interference damage.
5.50 When intending to apply a back tension in excess of the
structural capability of the supply reel intermediate
equipment (e.g. twin capstan) will be required between
the supply reel and the winch drum to generate sufficient
rope tension.
5.51 Applying a back tension in the order of one half of the
anticipated line tension can promote improved multi-layer
spooling and prevent subsequent damage to the rope.
5.52 For some applications, the rope can relatively easily be
tensioned after installation by running the rope out and re-
spooling under tension.
5.53 During normal usage, tension in the lower layers will
reduce resulting in these layers becoming loose and
susceptible to crushing and broken wires. It is therefore
necessary to routinely re-tension the whole rope as per
initial installation to minimise damage in the ‘dead’ wraps
of rope that remain on the winch drum.
5.54 Do not pull a rope through a fixed gripping arrangement
or ‘tight’ pulleys as a means of applying a back tension
as this will cause rotation of the rope and potentially result
in the rope being unusable.

WARNING
7.9 When using a disc cutter, use appropriate personal
protective equipment and be aware of the danger from
sparks, disc fragmentation and fumes, which can be
harmful to health.
WARNING
7.10 Rope produced from carbon steel wires in the as-shipped form is
not considered a health hazard. During subsequent processing,
such as cutting, welding, cleaning, dust and fumes may be
produced that contain elements that may affect exposed
workers. See section headed ‘Material Safety Data’.
WARNING
7.13 Failure to correctly secure the rope end is likely to lead to
slackness, distortions, premature removal from service and
a reduction in the breaking force of the rope, which could
render it unsafe.

WARNING
8.6 The short length of rope or bar must not be positioned
between the tail rope and live rope, to prevent the end of
the rope or bar contacting the wedge and pushing it out
of the socket.
8.7 In both configurations A & B, if slippage of the rope were
to take place the rope end would contact the base of the
socket body to provide resistance and aid pull in.

10.20 Failure to maintain the integrity of the rope will not only
affect the result of any subsequent test, but could also
result in significant cutting back of the actual rope to an
unaffected area.
10.21 In addition to following the procedures for cutting of the
rope (Section 8), make sure that the sample length
remains straight during preparation and that the ends of
the rope are welded before moving the sample.
10.22 For rope diameters up to and including 76mm the
minimum sample length taken should be at least 4
metres, for larger rope diameters the sample length
should be at least 8 metres.
10.23 Longer sample length will be required when in addition
to the destruction test; individual wire tests are also
required. This may be particularly relevant in the mining
11. Maintenance
11.1 Lubricating of wire rope in service
Normally wire ropes are adequately lubricated during
manufacture for their intended use, sufficient to prevent
deterioration during transport and storage. The type and
amount of lubricant, often referred to as a service dressing,
which is applied during maintenance generally depends upon
the application and working environment.
11.2 Most wire ropes operate around sheaves & drums and
are subjected to bending, it is therefore considered
essential to lubricate ropes in-service by applying a
dressing as soon as they are put in to service or
preferably, due to ease of application, during installation.
This will minimise the internal friction between the
individual wires within the rope and is equally important
for galvanised ropes as bright ropes. The dressing will
also protect the wires from corrosion and Zinc from
oxidization.
11.3 Ensure that the rope dressing/lubricant applied in service
is compatible with the rope manufacturer’s lubricant and
that the type and level applied suits the application.
11.4 A dry running rope could suffer a reduction in
performance in excess of 50%.
11.5 Reference to the OEM’s manual may provide guidance
on the type of in-service lubricant to be used and the
frequency of application
