SUSTAINABLE MINING

1. Executive summary
This study is focused on aspects dealing with, the increasing need of
mining minerals and coal, and there adverse effect on environment/society
etc in order to fulfill the demand, possible cases which can improve or
rather replace current scenario of conventional mining method for better
situation and utilization of resources in mine & people habitat around it.

2. Introduction
As being one of the fastest growing economies and after touching the $3
trillion GDP mark, the thinkable question arises that, how to not only
maintain it, but also to fulfill the Energy or Fuel increasing demand of the
nation with the increase of population keeping in mind & to not affect or
discomfort to the ecological or humanly scenario during exploration of
resources. Mining of these resources also provides raw material for many
basic industries such as Steel, power etc.

3. Findings
As the demand of exploration and extraction increases but it is not
supported by necessary supply by india’s mining sector. This management
failure leads us every year to pay heavy prices on imports for the same
resources which are already available in our domain unexplored. for eg.

in india the rate of opening new opportunities in mining is significantly very

low, results in shuting down established mineral deposit mines, in
unavailability of further requirement to explore it.

4. Discussion
The ongoing quest of expolration of minerals in nation are also in
question by there conventional or there usual mining operation practice
which made there scarful impact on the environment and sometimes leads
to the danger of livilihood for the people around it.
According to the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) of India report on
the assessment of environmental impact due to mining activities and its
mitigation in CIL.
arises many intresting key findings and recommendations such as on air &
water pollution, land managment, environmental managment system etc.

As for the people living near mining area they have to face challenges for
there daily struggle. It is the some kind off reason why in india land
aquisition is so much di cult. They just not have to struggel for there
health but also for there resources from the nature such as woods, water ,or
lack of fertile soil to farm.
A very interesting report has been made by quartz india depict condition of
jharia, dhanbad the coal capital of india.

5. Recommendation
There are various methods & operations which had been tested and
implemented in many countries for te sustainable mining of minerals and
coal. which has in favor of man and environment both around mines.

● land rehabilitation : It is the process of returning the land in a given

area to some degree of its former state.

ent-types-of-mine-rehabilitation

● Carbon Sequestration: It is the process of storing Carbon in a Carbon

Pool. (co2)is naturally captured from the atomsphere through
biological, chemical, and physical processes.

● Reuse of Mine Waste: coal itself output various essential product eg.
tar, crude benzol, coke, tar, SNG, fuel gases, etc.
and the process of coal liquification can offer future and non polluting
fuels, motor fuels, and raw material for chemical industries.

6. Implementation
● Process and time for environment and forest approvals ex. Australia
● Commercial mining as a solution to reduce coal supply gap
● External stakeholder management is the key to success of mining
companies
