MAT02 – STATISTICS
AND PROBABILITY
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• A probability experiment is a chance process that
leads to well-defined results called outcomes.
experiment.
TREE DIAGRAM
Use a tree diagram to find the sample space for the
gender of three children in a family.
• An event consists of a set of outcomes of a
probability experiment. It could be one outcome
or more than one outcomes.
• Experiment: Rollin a die
• Outcomes: { 1,2,3,4,5,6}
2. Empirical probability
3. Subjective probability
CLASSICAL PROBABILITY
CLASSICAL PROBABILITY
• Uses sample spaces to determine the
numerical probability that an event will
happen.
• First type of probability studied formally by
mathematicians in the 17th and 18th
centuries.
• Assumes that all outcomes in the sample

MULTIPLICATION RULES
• Two events A and B are said to be
independent events if the fact that A occurs
does not affect the probability of B
occurring.
• Example: tossing a coin and then rolling a die;
rolling a die and getting a 6, and then rolling a
second die and getting a 3; drawing a card from a
deck and getting a queen, replacing it, and drawing
a second card and getting a queen.
MULTIPLICATION RULES
• When the outcome or occurrence of the first
event affects the outcome or occurrence of
the second event in such a way that the
probability is changed, the events are said to
be dependent events.
• Example: drawing a card from a deck, not
replacing it, and then drawing a second card;
having high grades and getting a scholarship;
parking in a no-parking zone and getting a parking
ticket.
MULTIPLICATION RULES
•• When two events are independent, the
probability of both occurring is
