DIDACTICTS OF ENGLISH

Didactics is a branch of pedagogy whose object of study is the process between


teachers and students, in other words it also refers to teaching-learning that dynamizes
the connection between teachers, students and the contents, constituting the act didactic
as science, which is defined as that process that, in the most systematized way, is
directed to the integral formation of the new generations in which the student is
instructed and educated, that is, it develops both their thinking and their feelings.

Step 2: Check out in Learning Environment the book The Cambridge Guide to
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (p. 1-6), the reference EFL ESL
Teaching Terminology and the Glossary for the course and explain what the following
acronyms stand for. Additionally, illustrate their meanings by giving examples of each
one of them.

ACRONYMS

- L1 = “Language 1” = the student’s native (primary or first


acquired) language.
- L2 = “Language 2” = the language being learned or studied
- EFL = English as a Foreign Language (Studying English in non-
English-speaking countries)
- ESL = English as a Second Language (Studying English as a non-
native speaker in a country where English is spoken. Depending on where you
are from, the term ESL may be more inclusive and includes EFL. For some
people the reverse seems to be true.)
- ESP = (English for Specific Purposes) courses.
- EST = (English for Science and Technology) and so on.
- EAP = English for Academic purposes. Commonly known as
Academic English, entails training students, usually in a higher education
setting, to use language appropriately for study
- CBI = Content Based Instruction. This is a significant approach
in language education, designed to provide second-language learners instruction
in content and language.
- CLIL = Content and Language Integrated Learning. CLIL can
work for students of any age, all the way from primary level to university and
beyond.
- STT = Student Talking Time. Group work with the teacher
monitoring, rather than an open class, is a way to increase the STT in an activity.
- TTT = Teacher Talking Time. A teacher monitoring student
working in groups completing a discussion will probably do fairly little talking,
limiting themselves to clarification of the task and offering language when
requested.
- FES = Fluent English Speaker. The boy didn't recognize the man,
who is not a fluent English speaker, and went home to report a stranger had tried
talking to him.
- LES = Limited English Speaker. refers to a person who is not
fluent in the English language, often because it is not their native language.
- CLL = Community Language Learning. A language learning
community is an environment in which students work together to develop
aspects of the language that they would like to improve.
- CLT = Communicative Language Teaching. The communicative
method or communicative teaching of the language is an approach in the
teaching of languages in which interaction is given maximum importance as a
means and as a final objective in learning a language. It is also known as a
communicative approach
