b. Load Calculation:
i. Ultimate Load = 750 MT
ii. Area of Platform = 12x12 = 144sqm
iii. Kentledge Load = 750x1.25 = 937.5 MT
iv. Load Intensity = 937.5/144 = 6.51 t/sqm
v. UDL = 6.51x12 = 78.12 t/m
c. Design of Primary Girder:
i. Case-I (When Jack is not operated (Simply supported condition))
Max. bending moment = wl2/8 = 78.12x52/8 = 244.125 t-m
ii. Case-II (When Jack is operating
Dia of ram = 300mm

A C
D B E

12m

iii. Net UDL = 78.12x12 = 937.5 t

iv. Point Load at point B by ram = 2x500 = 1000 t
v. Reactions at point A & C = (937.5-1000)/2 = -31.25 t
vi. Bending Moment at point D = -1070.348 t-m

Thus design bending moment = -1070.348 t-m = 10500.11 kNm

vii. IXX = 91813.00 cm4 ( Table 1, SP 6(1) 1964)

viii. rXX = 24.24 cm ( Table 1, SP 6(1) 1964)
ix. ZXX = 29523.69 cm3
x. σbc = M/ZXX = 355.650 MPa

Thus stress on each member = 59.275 MPa < 137.71 MPa, (Table 6.1F, IS 800, 1984), Hence

d. Design of secondary girder

We have provided 27 Nos. ISMB 450 as secondary girder
i. Load intensity = 6.51 t/m2
ii. Spacing = 460mm
iii. UDL = 6.51x0.46 = 2.995 t/m
iv. Bending Moment = 2.995x52/8 = 9.359 t-m = 91.81 kNm
v. IXX = 30390.8 cm4 ( Table 1, SP 6(1) 1964)
vi. rxx = 18.15 cm ( Table 1, SP 6(1) 1964)
vii. Zxx = 30390.8/18.15 = 1674.42 cm3
viii. σbc = M/ Zxx = 54.83 MPa < 105.782MPa, (Table 6.1F, IS 800, 1984), Hence O.K

6. Loading Breakup
a. ISMB 600 X 12m X 06Nos. @ 123kg/m = 8.856 MT
b. ISMB 450X 12m X 27Nos. @ 72.4kg/m = 23.458 MT
c. Reinforcement, LS = 5.000 MT
d. Sand Bags 9mX9m

2.5m
V2

V1 2m

12mX12m
Volume, V= V1 + V2

V1 = 12X12X2 = 288m3

V2 = (h/3)X(A1+A2+(A1XA2)1/2 = 277.5m3

Weight, W = (288+277.5)X1750 = 989.62 MT (considering density of sand as 1750 kg/m 3)

Less 5% for voids = 989.62X5/100 = 49.48 MT

Total Effective Weight = 989.62-49.48 = 940.14 MT

e. Net Weight = 940.14+5.000+23.458+8.856 = 977.454 MT > 937.5MT

Hence Kentledge is Safe.

7. Loading System
The test is to be conducted by Kentledge Method of loading. The Kentledge load in the form of sand
bags shall rest on prepared Platform. The total Kentledge load for respective test pile is given in Table
1. Load on the pile will be applied by 2 number of hydraulic jacks of 500MT capacity as required,
placed over the furnished pile and reacting against a steel Joist of Composite ISMB section. The
applied load will be measured in the pressure gauge or Load Gauge mounted on the Hydraulic Pump.
8. Measuring System
Vertical load applied on the pile shall be measured by a Calibrated Pressure Gauge or Load Gauge
mounted on the Hydraulic Pump. Settlement is measured by four dial gauges (25 mm Range) placed
diametrically opposite to each other fixed to datum bar. The Dial Gauges are of 25mm run as and
when required having a least count of 0.01mm. The datum bar shall be housed with two spikes at the
end of the datum bar embedded well into the ground. Datum bar supports will be at a distance of 3 D
(subject to minimum of 2.0 m) from the edge of the piles, where D is the pile stem diameter of
circular piles as per IS 2911 Part 4 clause 7.1.4.1.
9. Method of conducting test
On verification of the entire test requirement, load shall be applied in stages with increments of
about 20% of test load as per IS 2911 part IV in accordance with the settlement criteria as mentioned
in the next paragraph.

Settlement Criteria- Each stage of loading will be maintained for a period till the rate of movement
of the pile head is either less than 0.2 mm per hr or maximum 2hr have elapsed whichever is earlier
subject to a minimum of 1 hr. Then, next incremental load is applied and further unloading is carried
out step wise up to the zero by observing reading as stated above. In the same way, the test is
continued till the maximum test load (750 MT). After reading for maximum load is noted, unloading
is done as shown in table above and rebound settlement is recorded for each stage.

Loading shall be continued till one of the following occurs:-

● The test load on the pile is 1.5 times the vertical load capacity of the pile OR
● Maximum settlement of pile exceeds a value of 18mm for pile dia more than 600 mm or 2 percent
pile diameter whichever is less unless otherwise required in a given case on the basis of nature and
type of structure in which case, the safe load should be corresponding to the stated total
displacement permissible. As per clause no 7.2.1.1(b)
If the permissible settlement is not reached till test load, the test load is maintained for 24hrs.
10. Assessment of Safe load
The safe load is the load at which the maximum settlement not greater than 18mm or 2 percent of pile
diameter whichever is less. In case of routine test on group of piles the maximum settlement of the
test loading in position being not exceeding 25mm.
