BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Decimals show values that are less than one. They use a continuation of the place
values that show whole numbers. Each place value is ten times less as you move to
the right. This means that the first place to the right of the decimal point (the
decimal point separates the whole units from the decimal parts) is tenths, the next
is hundredths, and then thousandths.

A. COMPARING DECIMALS:
To compare decimals, we can use tenth grid chart or a 10 x 10 grid. Let us study the model
below.

Analyze this problem:

Lola Felisa prepares a square shaped special puto for special occasions.
In her grandson’s birthday, she cooked special puto. Each special puto is exactly the same
size and is divided into equal parts called slices. At AJ’s party each child had 2 out of 10
slices from a single special puto. At Carl’s party, each child had 15 out of 100 slices from
a single special puto. To whose party did each child have more puto?

Answer the following questions before proceeding to the illustration.

• How do you describe Lola Felisa?

• If you were AJ and Carl what food will you request your lola to cook?

To compare and order decimals, follow these steps;
1. Align the digits according to their place values.
2. Start comparing from leftmost digits.
3. Find the place value where the digits differ.
4. The decimal with the greatest digit is the greatest number and the decimal
with the least digit is the least number.
* Affixing or removing zeros after the nonzero digit of a decimal does
not change its value.
