CHEM 120.

1 – ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (LABORATORY)

LABORATORY REPORT

Name: Giema M. Oroc Offering No.: R081

Lab Schedule: 7:00- 10:00 (Monday) Date Submitted: Sept. 16, 2021

Exercise No. 1
Introduction: Safety Precautions and the Chemical Laboratory

I. OBJECTIVES
1. To become familiar with some of the laboratory's safety precautions.
2. To become familiar with some of the most typical laboratory operations.
3. To have a better understanding of the chemicals and elements that will be used.

Results Inference
1. Measuring Volume -The meniscus, or curvature on the instruments, is
used to calculate the volume of the liquid. The pipet
a. Using pipet 2.50ml and graduated cylinder must be on 2.50 ml and 100 ml,
respectively, according to the methods. Ensured that
b. Using graduated cylinder 100ml both instruments are in good working order and are
free of damage.
2. Measuring Weight -Subtracting the tare weight from the gross weight
yields. 2.2379 g, which is the net weight of the solid
a. Tare weight (wt. of container) 2.2461g sample, which is the sand. As a result, the sand utilized
in the film has a total net weight of 2.2378g.  According
b. Gross weight (wt. of container w/ sand) 4.4840g to the weight measurement video, the tare weight of the
boat and the gross weight of the experiment using the
c. Net weight (wt. of sand) 2.237g analytical balance are 2.2461 g (tare) and 4.4840 g,
respectively (gross).
3. Precipitation - When more drops of NaOH were applied, the large
clumps of brown precipitate were broken down into
a. Color of ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution yellowish brown small brown particles. When the precipitation occurred,
there was also a sizzling sound. As a result of the
b. Color of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution colorless or experiment, the creation of a precipitate was noticed,
as well as the result of the mixing. Precipitation
transparent occurred after combining 1.0 ml of 3 M ferric chloride
(FeCl3) with 90 ml of 3 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH),
c. Color of precipitate reddish brown and brown floating particles were seen in the
experiment.
4. Decantation -After the solution was decanted, the supernatant liquid
was discovered to be reddish brown in hue. For
a. Color of supernatant liquid translucent reddish brown decantation, half of the solution from the precipitation
process was employed. The supernatant liquid was
transferred out to the dish using the stirring rod,
keeping the residual precipitate inside the beaker.
5. Filtration - The leftover residue in the beaker was collected and
poured into the filter paper using small volumes of
a. Weight of filter paper 1.2519g distilled water. The precipitate was allowed in the filter
paper to dry once the filtration was completed. To
b. Wt. of filter and precipitate (after drying) 2.3090g complete the filtration process, the weight of the filter
paper before the process was 1.2519g, which when
c. Weight of precipitate 1.057g combined with the weight of the precipitate, which was
1.0571g, yielded an overall weight of 2.3090g with a
d. Color of filtrate from red to scarlet red red to scarlet red color. The filter paper was weighed
first, and the weight of the precipitate was determined
later. Both of the solutions were carefully poured into
the filter paper and the remaining remnants of the
precipitate were collected after securing the filtration
set up (cone shape filter paper inside the funnel, the
evaporating dish where the supernatant liquid from the
decantation process was placed, the tripod, and the
clay triangle).
6. Evaporation -The evaporating dish was left to cool after the liquid
evaporated, and we can see the production of Sodium
a. Weight of evaporating dish 56.8255g Chloride there (NaCl). To complete the evaporation
process, the weight of the evaporating dish (56.8255 g)
b. Wt. of evap. dish and residue (after drying) 58.7243g was removed from the combined weight of the
evaporating dish and the residue (58.7243 g), yielding
c. Weight of residue 1.8988g 1.8988 g of residue (NaCl). The supernatant liquid and
the filtrated substance inside the evaporating dish were
d. Color of residue white evaporated in order to obtain the solid product of the
FeCl3 and NaOH solution, sodium chloride (NaCl).
e. Texture of residue hard and rough According to the video, the evaporating dish is
supported by a wire gauze and tripod and is put above
the Bunsen burner.
