1 General information

The technical specifications listed here are required for instrument functionality and specifications, for the
warranty to be in effect, for not causing extra costs for the installation and training, and for service.

Please read through the whole document thoroughly.

Before Delivery: Make a floor plan with dimensions where you want to place:
Multiscanner, UPS, Water-to-air chiller, Cooling water tank, water-to-water chiller
and Instrument PC table. Please mark where power outlets will be placed and where
the nearest tap water and drain will be located. We need this plan to calculate the
length of water hoses and cables that will be included in the delivery.

2 The Lab

2.1 The Laboratory environment

2.1.1 ROOM.
1. The room should offer a standard laboratory environment with regards to all aspects, including
vibrations, air quality etc. The temperature should be 15-24 degrees Celsius (60-80 Fahrenheit) at
all times. The air humidity should be in the 40-80 % relative humidity range, so that static electricity,
as well as condensation of humidity on Itrax parts can be avoided. Do not expose the instruments
to direct sunlight, to avoid excessive heating. Please note that a constant air humidity is desirable
for measurement of calibrated density values of wood.
The thermal load added to the room by the Multiscanner is less than 0,5 kW including the
instrument computer (exclusive of chiller heat load).
2.1.2 ROOM SIZE
2. The recommended space behind the instrument is minimum 75 centimeters, and the minimum
recommended room size is 3x4 meters for the Multiscanner, preferably more. The Multiscanner
dimensions are approximately 780x820x1570 millimeters LWH with a weight of about 280 kilos.
Space is also needed for the UPS (71x31 centimeters, and a table for optical scanner (40x50
centimeters), and the computer.. The chiller system can be placed in an adjacent room or in the
laboratory room if there are a ventilation system that can handle the extra heat load that can be up
to about 3 kW for the Multiscanner. A setup drawing is shown on the last page of this document

3
2.1.3 INTERNET
3. An Internet connection of good quality is a prerequisite for warranty as well as service work.
2.1.4 Table
4. A user table for the computer and for the optical scanner, plus a chair is needed beside the
instrument (not included).

You must arrange for powering of the instrument as well as powering of the water chiller before
delivery. Your responsibility includes all preparations up to the connection box next to the Itrax.

3 Power Supply

3.1 Itrax power

• The Itrax delivered with our standard UPS requires three phase power as follows:
• The recommended continuous load capacity for a three-phase system is 20 Amperes for
each phase at 230V, and the minimum current is 16 amperes per phase, slow fuse at 230
volts 50 Hz (i.e. system with 400 volts between phases).

• The Itrax must have Neutral (0) as well as ground wiring. The Neutral must have
an equally big cable as the phases, so a five-wire cable must be mounted all the
way from the electrical central of the building to the outlet.

• The ground cable must be minimum 10mm2 all the way from the electrical central
of the building and to the Itrax UPS.
• The impedance must be below 2 Ohms between the ground in the central power
panel of the building and the ground at the Itrax connection point. If you suspect
that the grounding of your building is less than good, please contact us for further
information.
• A suitable power connection box for the Itrax is one with screw connectors for the cable.
This switch must cut all three phases but MUST NOT cut ground and 0. A
connector of this type is to be prepared before our installation team arrives.
Breaking the ground wire while the Itrax is powered by the UPS means serious
risks. Therefore it is not allowed to use a plug connector.
• An automatic power breaker for residual current(RCB) in size 30mA is placed in
a connection box between UPS and Multiscanner . It is provided by Cox. If local
regulations require an RCB to be placed before the UPS, it must be at least 300mA or
the UPS will not work.

of a fuse box and screw connector with a switch
(below fuse box). These are placed on the wall close
to the UPS.
The lower photo shows a switch with screw
connectors in close up. To the right in this image you
can see that the switch cuts the three phases but not
the 0 and ground cables.

3.3 WARNING
There are general considerations about grounding that you need to check. This refers to the Itrax in the
same way as to any equipment that consumes many amperes from you power grid. The Itrax Multiscanner
instrument is a 3-phase, high voltage, high power instrument and thus it is important from a general
security point of view that the electric connections are correct and that the instrument is properly
grounded. Make sure that the ground connection in the wall plug is “real” ground, so that a potential
difference should never occur between the ground point in the wall plug and any other “grounded” metal
item inside the laboratory like water pipes, sink, heaters etc. The ground point is normally defined by a
copper plate buried deep into the soil somewhere between your building and the closest transformer
station. Normal security requirement is to maintain a resistance below 2 ohms between the ground point
and any other “grounded” metal item inside the laboratory. Note, however, that such a resistive
measurement is not straightforward but has to be performed by a qualified electrical engineer with
dedicated equipment.

Another necessity is that the neutral and ground should be connected at one point, but only at one point,
somewhere in your building or not to far from your building, ensuring that the potential difference always
will be kept very low.

If these requirements are difficult to meet please contact Cox for further instructions and suggestions.

4 Cooling system

4.1 The instrument chiller installation

The cooling system works with one water-to-air chiller that is connected to a smaller water-to-water chiller
that is connected to the Multiscanner. The cooling water are therefore working in two separate loops. The
outer loop incorporates the water-to-air chiller and also a buffer cooling water tank.

4.2 Water-to-water chiller

The water-to-water chiller is best placed fairly close to the Itrax as it needs to be accessed at X-ray tube
exchanges. It is powered from the Itrax and does not need any separate powering. The dimensions are
451x300x410 millimeters LWH.
It is recommended that you exchange the cooling medium at least every two years in good environments,
and more often in dusty environments.

4.3 Water-to-air chiller

This chiller requires 230 volts (+/- 10% maximum variation), 50 Hz one phase. The chiller needs a 16A
slow fuse at 230 V. This power outlet is to be placed close to the chiller. The recommended connector is
CEE17 in European Union. Outside the EU a fixed connection or contact where 0 and phase cannot be
confused must be used. The unit are made for indoor placing. It can be placed either in the Itrax room or in
an adjacent room.
The chiller unit size is 91x33x82 centimeters LWH and the weight 80 kilos. A detailed drawing and
placement restrictions are shown in the end of appendix 2. The maximum environment temperature range
is 0 to 40 º C, but the recommended working temperature range is 20-25 º C .
The buffer cooling water tank(115x85x76cm,HxLxW) should normally be place within a couple of meters
from the chiller. The chiller and tank are connected with 1” water hoses.
The tank is then connected to the water-to-water chiller with 3/8” water
hoses.

The sound pressure level is up to 65dB (A) from the chiller, normally much
less. We recommend you to have it placed in a separate room due to the risk
for noise and since a large amount of heat comes from it. It is recommended
that it is placed at an air outlet with a separate fan, sucking air out to a central
ventilation system, or into a large, well ventilated room. Another alternative
is blowing the air straight outdoors using a fan and an air channel, or out
through a hole in a wall. Placing the chiller in an open window frame is also
possible. In these cases, enough air supply to the room is needed. The chiller dissipates up to 3kW of heat
when used with the Multiscanner, which quickly heats up a room that is not well ventilated. Please consult
your ventilation experts for the chiller installation. When placing the chiller in another room than the Itrax,
you need to make holes in the walls for hoses/pipes. Holes and pipes should be as close to the floor as
possible.
Any attaching air outlet needs to be minimum 55x55 centimetres and with a sufficient air flow out, when
connecting the chiller to a ventilation system or fan as shown in the image. The external cooling unit is then
placed in direct connection to the air outlet as the drawing shows. The chiller is not equipped to pump air
through a channel, so it requires an external fan when connecting it like this.

The outer cooling water loop volume is about 100 litres, which needs to be filled with distilled / de-ionized
water. Please have a volume of 80 litres of distilled water ready at installation. It will be mixed with a
glycol containing cooling medium which is included in the delivery.

8
A glycol/water mixture of 30% ethylene glycol and 70% de-ionized or distilled water is used. The glycol
contains a biocide that prevents growth of bacteria and algae. A sufficient amount of glycol with biocide is
delivered with the Itrax. Please do not use other glycols than ethylene glycol in the system since there is
risk of clogging if ethylene glycol is mixed with propylene glycol, and please use one containing a biocide
to prevent algae growth. We recommend exchange of the glycol/water mixture every two years, or clotting
and clogging may occur.

5 Delivery, storage, getting the parts to the lab and installation days
If you have ordered the Itrax including delivery, the ownership and responsibility for the delivered
goods is taken over by you when the boxes have been loaded off the airplane/truck/lorry that delivers
the goods. From that point it is up to you to get the goods into the lab so that our staff can install the
Itrax there. When our staff arrives for the installation, they will help to get the goods in but all listed
arrangements need to be ready. If extra costs occur due to lack in preparations, these costs will be on
the buyer, including but not limited to costs for extended stays, repeated travels etc. for Cox staff.

1. In case your lab does not have a loading/unloading ramp, a forklift truck may be needed to lift
down the goods from the lorry. The trucks sometimes have a lorry back-lift, and that is sufficient.
2. The boxes need to be protected from rain and direct sunlight, and be stored indoors. The temperature
interval for the boxes is 0-30 degrees Celsius at all times.
3. The installation is carried out by staff from Cox, arriving at an agreed time, usually shortly after
confirmed arrival of the boxes.
4. Please arrange for at least one pallet handler available at installation for moving the
Multiscanner parts indoors.
5. Is the door width enough to bring the Multiscanner in? A door width of min. 80 centimetres is
required.
6. The Multiscanner usually comes in three of four boxes with the following approximate dimensions
and weights:
• Box 1: 1860x1000x 1120 millimeters LWH, Multiscanner instrument. Weight 350 kg.
• Box 2. 1200x1100x1120 millimeters LWH. PC, monitor, printer, scanner, spare parts, installation
material. Weight 250 kg
• Box 3. 1200x1100x1120 millimeters. Chiller and UPS. Weight 300 kg
• Box 4. 1000x1000x1280 millimeters. Colling water tank. Weight 200 kg

When our staff arrives for the installation, there needs to be a working table (more than the table for
computer and scanner) and two chairs, trash bins, cleaning paper and a vacuum cleaner. There needs to
be a waste-water sink and a tap or hose available within 15 meters, since the cooling system needs to
be flushed before filling it with cooling medium. Our staff brings a 20 meters long hose.
