The following is from a family history that was started by William while he was in Persia; it was never completed. These paragraphs
include some the personal information on William until they left for Persia.
While living at Andrew, Iowa, where my boyhood was spent, and of which I have pleasant recollections. In 1871 at the age of 14, I
was asked to teach a country school some 2 1/2 or 3 miles off. One of the directors was an elder in father's church, and seemed to think
one well qualified for the post. When father spoke to me, I ridiculed the idea: that I was going to school, and not fit to teach. But the
director would he me try, saying that he knew of my abilities (!) and that the directors were unanimous as to my trying my hand. At last I
yielded, and said I would try and get a certificate, which was granted, and I started forth to begin my school, having but little idea then as
to how to begin, and less now as to how they put up with me. I carried my dinner to school in a little tin bucket and walked there in the
morning and back at night, receiving $22.00 per month which wasn't bad in those days for a "shaver" like me. It was during this time that
I received my last whipping from my mother. Think of it - - a school teacher being whipped by his mother, just before starting out to
whale two or three who needed it less than he did perhaps! Starting out one morning for school, feeling my importance, no doubt, I was
asked by my mother to bring in a few sticks of wood. I suppose I was saucy. Anyway she reached for a switch and struck me several times
over the shoulders. To say that I was mortified, expresses it in to mild a way - - and if you've never been there, you can't know anything
about it. In telling this incident a few days ago to a young lady missionary friend of mine, she actually laughed out aloud. A thing I never
knew her to do before or since. Well, the 3 months passed.
I was now fifteen and had $66.00 in greenbacks in my pocket - - all mine - - which I proudly brought to my father and gave to him. He
was prouder than I, I believe, and said I could go off to school that Autumn, which I did; and how homesick I was at Lennox Collegiate
Institute! I boarded with the President, Dr. Hodge, and had as roommate a most excellent and godly young man - - Archie Strang (I think
that was his name). I did fairly well and next autumn or in 1872, I went to Grandview, Louisa Co., Iowa, which was a U. P. Academy and
where they sang psalms instead of hymns as at Collegiate Institute at Hopkington. At Grandview I met my fate in the person of a little
black-eyes (brown, I mean ) darling, a brown-haired little fairy by the name of Hattie Jane Gassner. We were classmates in Preparatory
Latin and Greek, being the only two in the Latin class. Many and happy were the days I spent with her until we were separated by my
father's having moved to Missouri, as related above. For seven years we corresponded and at last were engaged and happily married on
February 3, 1881.
But I'm getting ahead of my story again. After father had removed to Warrensburg, we children attended school, and I took an active
part in the work of the YMCA, although quite young. I was elected to be their Vice President and continued so as long as we lived there. I
made a good record in the Normal School and look back upon my time spent there as some of the happiest days of my life. The President,
Mr. Osborne was most kind to me as were Profs. Norton and Baumann.
My father, in 1878 I think it was, received a call from the U. P. church at Hoopeston, Vermillion Co., Illinois, where we moved in the
spring of 1879, if I mistake not. Here my mother, dear sainted mother, died in March '79, while I was attending medical lectures at Rush
Medical College, Chicago, and at Hoopeston she rests until the resurrection. I can not forget her love and wisdom and counsels, and owe a
great deal to her.
I remained in Chicago until I had completed my course, graduating in February 1880. I had received, before graduating from Rush and
receiving my degree of M. D., special license from the Illinois State Board of Health, to practice. After graduating I went to my uncle
Rev. J. T. Torrence who lived at Rankin, Illinois, to see about where I should begin practicing medicine. He and my preceptor, Dr. J. C.
McCaighey, advised starting at a little railroad station called Kirk's Station (Clarence P. O.), Illinois. He was near my uncle and I had as
patients several of the members of his church. I had not been in Kirk's long before a merchant there offered me a half-interest in a drug
store and general store if I'd look after it. This was a temptation to which I yielded, as I was in debt, and it looked like a Providential
opening for me to get out of debt. I soon joined the I. O. O. F. and was getting along fairly well financially. In the meantime my father had
married a second time: had come on a visit before his marriage to see his brother (my uncle) at Rankin, and had with him my darling
sister Ada, mother's eight and last child. She had symptoms of spinal trouble, and I agreed to take care of her at Kirk's and look after her
while father was away on his wedding trip, the idea being to take her back to him and this new wife in the Autumn of 1880, which I did to
DeSoto P. O. on the C. R. I. and P. RR beyond Des Moines.
Before starting it occurred to me that after having taken Ada to father's, on my return I would come via Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and see the
dear girl with whom I had almost constantly corresponded. I was a full-fledged doctor now, and she had graduated from the Iowa
Wesleyan University and was teaching in the public schools. I arrived in Mt. Pleasant, and as it was late, went to the hotel, expecting to
call on Hattie in the morning. But I hesitated, and scarcely knew what to do, when her father, Rev. J. Gassner, knowing that I had expected
to be in the city the previous evening, called at the hotel to know if I had come. I went with him to his house where I met my love, spent a
few days in courting her (it was in October), proposed to her, was accepted, and the marriage day fixed for February 3, 1881. I went and
claimed her as my own, and we have lived most happily on the whole ever since. We left Mt. Pleasant that same evening, going to
Chicago where we spent a few days, and from there to Kirk's Station boarding at the house of Mr. Moore and his 3 sisters.
One day in May, being at the store, Dr. Rankin, a friend of mine, asked me if I wanted to go to Persia. I turned abound and asked
Jennie. She said "yes." During the conversation it appeared that Dr. Rankin had been up at Pullman, Illinois and while there had met a
gentleman who knew Mr. Bassett, who was home on a vacation from Tehran. Mr. Bassett had said they were looking for a young doctor to
go as medical missionary to Tehran Persia. Dr. Rankin told him of me, and I wrote Mr. Bassett saying that I was willing to go. After some
correspondence, and an interview with Mr. Bassett held at the house of my preceptor, Dr. T. C. McCaughey of Hoopeston, I was asked by
Mr. Bassett to correspond with the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions at 23 Center St., New York (now 53 Fifth Avenue), sending
any testimonials. I did so, and shortly afterwards received my appointment, This was an important event in my career and, of course, in
the career of my dear wife.
We soon got ready, left Kirk's Station, went to her father's house and visited there a few days; then at her sisters, and at my father's
house, and made our preparations for going on to New York. I forgot to mention the death of Jennie's mother in December 1888. Also the
death of dear little Ada near DeSoto, Iowa. We sailed from New York, July 2, 1881, direct for London by the Anchor Line (SS Utopia),
reaching London July 16th, or two weeks later. (This ends the family history written by W. W. Torrence)
Jennie wrote of their trip to Persia in letters to school children in Iowa, where she had taught before her marriage. The following is
from her letters, continuing their journey from New York to Tehran.
It may be that I have at some time told you that from my eleventh year, I had constantly looked forward to life on a missionary field
but when I married a physician I supposed that was the end of my anticipated missionary life. However, events proved (?) but to be the
step leading to the foreign field. Medical men were not at that time regarded as useful on the mission field as they have since proven to be
and I am not sure that I had even heard of any but clergymen and teachers being sent out by the Missionary Boards. So on July 3, 1881 we
sailed direct to London from New York taking fourteen days for the trip. Deeply impressed on my memory is the horror, sorrow and
inability to believe the news the pilot brought us, when on July 15" the word was passed from one to another - President Garfield is dead -
shot on the day we sailed. No wireless messages in those days - no S.O.S. though I recall our stopping in mid ocean - just as the sun was
setting in an angry bank of clouds and sending out a small boat to a vessel flying the flag of distress, and how relieved we felt when we
found that they needed only a carpenter to make some small but necessary repairs. I recall also the jelly fish - the porpoises and the
unusual smoothness of the English Channel. The soft greys tinged with pink - keeping below into the blue of the sea and above into the
blue of the sky, left one in a dreamy way searching for the horizon line. Steadily our ship cut the water with her prow and there was scarce
a wave save those following astern. Other crafts seemed to be idly lying in the water - all hazy dreamy (?). The evening brought the full
moon. The water was so gently rippled and the horizon quilted into one that the moon's reflection seemed like the golden hoofs of
prancing steeds. Instead of the dreaded roughness and danger of this noted piece of water, we sailed almost as quietly as the well known
"painted ship upon a painted ocean." After some weeks in London our route took us via Harwich, Rotterdam, Emmerich, Berlin,
Virbollen, Smolenks, Orel and Grazzi(?) to Tsaritzan by rail and down the Volga to Astrakan by steamer. There we entered a barge and
were towed out to Nine Foot - a place in the delta of the Volga where the water is ordinarily nine feet deep, but the wind from the Caspian
had been blowing steadily for some days and being against the current of the river entering the sea, had heaped up the water until it was
thirteen instead of nine feet deep. Here we found that the steamer on which we had expected to sail had been storm stayed so we went
aboard the one standing at anchor - and just as we steamed away saw the other boat coming in. But it was too late to make the change,
desirable as it was. The boat on which circumstances had forced us was a supply steamer and was disagreeable beyond words. The dining
room was in a couple of rooms on the deck which might have been pleasant had it not been that the deck was literally covered with deck
passengers, so much so that we had difficulty in avoiding stepping on them. These passengers seemed to have their own food; and the
smell of this, their vile tobacco, their filthy clothing, their shipskin jackets wet with spray and other orien tal odors was enough to make
one sick without the rough weather which accompanied us. The food, too, either was not tasty or being of the Russian type not pleasant to
our taste, so what with caviar, borsch, black sour bread, ?uridges a little too high and the sweetish odor of the Eastern tobacco, that ship
has always stand in my mind as the most disagreeable experience in all my traveling. I have mentioned only a part of the unspeakable
offenses to eye, ear, taste and smell. To crown it all, when we approached the Enzeli harbor (roadstead), the winds and waves prevented a
landing, so we were carried on the Gez on the S.E. corner of the Caspian, where the Russian consul most kindly gave up his home for our
use until another steamer, shortly due, could take us back to Enzeli. Our party on leaving London, had consisted of five adults and four
children and was increased by an English colonel who had come on board at Baku. This gentle man occupied the office, which had only a
room or two and was set up on piles. The rest of us slept where we could in the consul's home. Fortunately there was a wide divan which
could hold two, and two or three others which would accommodate but one each, besides a bedroom. This little town - if the two or three
small houses can be thus called - is the harbor for Astraabad and is as wild and lonely a place as one would find. Ants, mosquitoes, cats
and hording wild beasts made this a night not to be forgotten. In the morning we walked to the edge of the water and making a seine from
a handkerchief landed some of the tiny fish - the only fish I ever caught out of the Caspian. Before the day was over, the return steamer
came into harbor and we went aboard to again try to make Enzeli - which was accomplished. We being landed in small boats, as a large
sandbar blocks the entrance to the harbor. Right here let me say that I am a good sailor. But I would have lost my reputation had it not
been for a mirror. One of the rough days in mid ocean, when we had to eat our dinners over the little fences, I was seated so that in either
direction three or four persons would have to rise and pass around the end of the table in order to let me pass to the stairway. The ship
rolled; and re-rolled and I felt very ill. Casting my eye toward the end of the table to see how many would have to rise if I moved,
unexpectedly I looked into a large mirror at the right end behind the officer sitting there. Instantly a wave of quietness seemed to flow
from my head down over me - and my illness was gone. I proceeded with my dinner when I felt ill again. Again I looked into the mirror
with the former result. I there found my specific for seasickness and sustained my reputation. Remember, there is not an inch of railroad
in all Persia and only a few hundred miles of carriage road so all the travel is done by means of horses and mules or little donkeys. We
had to hire 17 ½ horses and mules; the ½ being a little donkey who carried the feed for the rest of the animals. In this country when you
start on a journey, you do not put clean clothes in a satchel and money in your pocket and get on the first train. But you get ready a camp
bedstead with its necessary mattress, pillows and, covers, procure tablecloths, dishes, cooking utensils, provisions, etc., enough to last
your journey. You must take a cook and mule
drivers for every two or three mules; so one man
traveling requires quite a party. Well we started
from Reshd with a tachtilvarwan (tockt-I-
rawan) - what is that? Well it is a big, long box with
poles under it and extending at each end like
shafts - one mule being hitched between them in
front and one at the back. There is a window in
each end of the box and sliding doors at each
side. A carpet or mattress is spread on the floor and
crawling in - being careful not to bump your
head on the low ceiling you sit flat on the
bottom of the box. So feeling like part of a
menagerie, with a mule driver for a keeper, we
started. Next came the kejavas. These aren't
animals, but boxes made with an arched roof -
much like a covered wagon, but quite small. One
of these is swung on each side of a horse or
mule and are used for riding in. Two Children rode
in each side of the horse in these and I know you
would all have thought it funny if you had seen
them. After the kerjavas came the horses and
mules, some carrying the rest of the party,
others with beds, bedding, a chest of dishes, pots
and pans, or the trunks. For the first two days we
traveled over a very level tract of country
thickly covered with a heavy growth of trees,
beautiful ivy and hop vines, fig trees and
thorny bushes. The vegetation here was very
much, for the rain falls almost every day on that
side of the mountains. On the third day we
reached the mountains. I could not describe how
beautiful they were both in the distance and in
passing over them. The waterfalls, the queer
stone bridges, fernlike trees and winding road
made a beautiful picture. But the beauty was at
times forgotten when the driver had to stand on the
edge of a precipice and push the mules and
tachlivawan toward the mountain to keep us
from going over, down hundreds of feet to
what would have been certain death. After two
days travel up and down over these wooded
mountains, the foliage became less and less and
finally we were traveling among bare rocks. William Wilson Torrence with Medal of the Lion and Sun and Robe Some
places looked just like rocks had been melted and poured over the mountains, other as if they had been burned, and others brown or green.
They are wonderful but a few days of this with scarce a tree or shrub or even a spear of grass to be seen, becomes very tiresome. One
night we were compelled to travel up and up - high and higher until sunrise found us seemingly above the clouds. We then took our
Sunday rest in a lovely green valley between the tops of the mountains. The next day we started early for Casveen. Before reaching there
we traveled for miles over a broad plain under a sun of the most intense brightness and heat. We saw several mirages. We felt almost
certain that there was a large lake in front of us. We seemingly saw the reflections of trees and mountains but found it is a mistake. These
mirages are quite common as the sun is very hot and the soil sandy, nothing growing except where the water is led. We entered Casveen
through a large gate on the South and wound around and around through narrow streets - seeing nothing but high mud walls with here and
there a door or an open bazaar. But the chopperhona or stopping place was very nice and comfortable - almost a hotel which is a perfect
marvel in this country. From Casveen we dismissed part of the caravan and sent the rest ahead while we came in carriages. The road is
without exception the best road I ever saw. I have been told that it was made with a view to using it as a railroad bed some day. It is very
level and wide, and we came not at a good trotting pace, but just tearing along like mad. The horses had to be coaxed and whipped to
start, but once started off they gallop like the wind. If you had seen us you would never have imagined we were sober minded
missionaries, but lunatics taking a ride with a drunken driver. But that is way they go in this country so we felt quite safe. One carriage
required four horses, and instead of a front team and another next the carriage, all four were hitched abreast. We arrived in Tehran Sept
28" thankful indeed that the Journey was over and that we had been kept while in the midst of danger.
Soon after their arrival in Tehran, William was offered the position of Vice Consul General of the United States of America at Teheran.
He accepted, and served in that position until he left in 1892. Also, in 1886 he was “appointed Counselor in the Imperial Government’s
(Persian) embassy in the United States of America.” The original
citation from the Shah is in possession of Neil Torrence, a grandson, and a
life-sized photographic copy is in the possession of David R. Swaney. A
medal (“The Lion and Sun”) is shown on this page, as is a picture of
William Torrence with his medal and ceremonial coat, on the previous page.
Both Jennie and William wrote of their time in Persia, and these, and
other writing by them, and other Torrence family members, have been
compiled as “Torrence Family Papers by David R. Swaney.
Following their return, they were at Ottawa, Illinois, for about a year.
It was here that their daughter, Mary Eda, was born. In 1894 the
family moved to South Dakota, where they lived in Deadwood and
Spearfish. William was a physician for a gold mine company, and the
Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. In 1904 William
transferred to Denver for the CB&Q, and the family moved to Denver the
next year.
Following the death of her husband in Denver, CO, Jennie and her children moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where she had property
inherited from her mother. They lived at 209 E. Madison St. Her daughters Annie Margaret and Mary Eda graduated from Iowa Wesleyan
College at Mt. Pleasant. When she applied for her passport for the trip to the Philippines, she was living in California.
In 1920 she went to the Philippines with her daughter Margaret. There she taught at a school in Zamboanga, Mindanao. She was ill for
several months. During a boat trip to Manila Hattie was thrown from her bunk and injured her abdominal area. She died a few days later
in Manila. The death certificate from Manila says that she died from cancer. She appeared on the census of 1860 at Farmington Twp., Van
