MAN-cats information

Ensuring system stability in the event of conversions and control unit replacement
The constantly growing number of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and other WLAN devices
mean that wireless signal density is steadily rising. At the same time, the amounts of data that must be
transferred from the MAN-cats service computer to the vehicle control units is increasing. As a result of the
increased volume, individual communication faults may occur.
To counteract this problem, particularly when flashing or parameterising control units, we recommend not
using the WLAN communication and using a network cable between the vehicle communication interface
(VCI) T200 and the MAN-cats service computer.
MAN-cats III: When using a network cable, an existing wireless connection (WLAN) must be disconnected
manually. For details see section 1, MAN-cats III.
This Information sheet is available on the Internet (MAN After Sales Portal) and MAN-cats III (information portal).
This Information sheet will also be made available to the MAN service organisation on the MAN Intranet/Extranet.
This information applies in addition to as well as in conjunction with the standard service documents (Operator's Manual, repair and
maintenance instructions, etc.), the MAN-cats user manual and the generally applicable regulations concerning workshop processes,
etc.

1 Conversion to network cables:
• MAN-cats II:
Convert to cable interface within the system control
(System settings Interface settings Change interface)
• MAN-cats III:
Connect the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) T200 to the MAN-cats III service computer
using a network cable
The next work step involves manually disconnecting an existing wireless connection (WLAN).
Background: If the existing wireless connection is not disconnected, this may mean that, despite the
network cable, the flashing and parameterisation procedure may occur via the existing wireless
connection (WLAN), which in turn may lead to interruptions.
Open the Windows network control by clicking on the corresponding symbol (status display for
signal strength of the WLAN connection) in the info area of the Windows taskbar (area where
the time is displayed)
Click on the row of the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) to be disconnected.
The last nine figures of the interface designation are documented on the rear of the VCI
Select the "Disconnect" button to disconnect the wireless connection to the Vehicle
Communication Interface (VCI).
It is possible to switch back to a wireless connection after completing the work (e.g. flashing,
parameterisation).
To do so, remove the network cable between the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) T200
and the MAN-cats III service computer
Re-open the Windows network control
Click on the row of the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) to be connected.
Select the "Connect" button in order to begin establishing a connection
It takes some time for the connection to be established, and it is complete when the status bar
for the WLAN connection setup is visible (bar/symbol for signal strength)

2 Description of procedure for EDC 17 control unit:
Read complete diagnostic vehicle memory. This is not necessary if the Dialogue Reception has already
been carried out.
Before commencing flashing, read and note down the IQA data of the injectors and the item number of
the EDC control unit.
Perform body conversion/control unit replacement
If an interruption during flashing occurs in a few rare cases despite the measure taken (network cable
between VCI T200 and MAN-cats service computer), proceed as follows:
o MAN-cats II:
Perform body conversion/control unit replacement again. If a restart is unsuccessful, open an
SSD request or submit a technical support request.
o MAN-cats III:
MAN-cats III has a function that enables undetected or faulty control units to be selected
manually in order to restart the control unit after an "interruption to the flashing procedure", for
example.
Call up the "flashing" application as follows:
Vehicle identification
Vehicle model
Control unit
Systems
Driveline systems
Engine
Control unit family e.g. Mot-EDC17-Bosch (menu item only appears after interrupting the
flashing procedure)
Flashing (for information, also see MAN-cats user manual 3.00, Section 20.3 – Flashing)

3 Information on flashing the Intarder 3 control unit:
Depending on the vehicle equipment, flashing may be interrupted during flashing of the Intarder 3 control
unit. One cause of this may be the number of CAN data bus participants as well as the high utilisation of the
driveline CAN data bus during flashing.
We recommend the following procedures to ensure a stable flashing process:
• Load relief of the driveline CAN data bus
• Flashing with MAN-cats III using "control unit" application/selection in the "model" category
3.1.1 Connecting OBD CAN data bus to driveline CAN data bus
Before flashing, connect the break box for the Power Train Manager (PTM) to plug "B" using a test
cable
Establish jumper between PIN 4 and PIN 6 – plug-side – and
Jumper between PIN 16 and PIN 18 – plug-side

3.2 Flashing with MAN-cats III using "control unit" application/selection
MAN-cats III has a function that enables undetected or faulty control units to be selected manually in order to
restart the control unit after an "interruption to the flashing procedure", for example.
Call up the "flashing" application as follows:
Vehicle identification
Vehicle model
Control unit
Systems
Braking and chassis systems
Continuous brake
Control unit family e.g. RET-InTRDR3-ZF (menu item only appears after interrupting the flashing
procedure or if the control unit is not detected)
Flashing (for information, also see MAN-cats user manual 3.00, Section 20.3 – Flashing)
It may be necessary to enter the source and target item numbers.
Once flashing is complete, if necessary remove the break box or replace the removed fuses of the
corresponding electronic systems
Delete diagnostic memory of complete vehicle
