Introduction
This assignment requires you to demonstrate knowledge and skills you have acquired
throughout the course of this module by producing a 3000 word, fully referenced academic
report that addresses the tasks given below. In order to complete the assignment, you will
need to choose an industry and an appropriate organisation within it to research.

Choosing an appropriate organisation

Step 1: select an industry in which you are interested. For example, telecommunications,
pharmaceutical, defence, automotive, commercial airlines, banking, fashion retailing, IT,
hospitality, leisure, construction or oil and gas.

Step 2: select a large company within that industry which probably operates internationally
across many countries. Typical features of these sorts of companies are that they:

• Have been involved in some form of merger or takeover activity

• Are a public limited company (PLC)
• Are a multinational corporation
• Have a large number of employees to manage
• Are accountable to senior managers, the board and shareholders
• Experience competition from one or more organisations in the market (and
therefore are not a monopoly)

Researching your organisation

You can use web resources to enable you to understand the context in which your
selected organisation operates.

Do not limit yourself, however to web-based sources of information. You should also use
academic, industry and other sources.

Example – Rolls Royce (not to be used by the student)

Rolls Royce was formed from two companies, an electrical and mechanical business
established by Henry Royce in 1884 (which produced its first motor car in 1904) and
Charles Rolls who sold quality cars in London. Following the success of this first car and
benefits of working together, the two companies formed Rolls Royce in March 1908. This
led to the launch of the six-cylinder Silver Ghost which within a year was hailed the best
car in the world.

During the First World War, in response to the nation’s need, the company manufactured
its first aero engine – the Eagle providing half of the total horsepower used in the air war
by the allies. The Second World War demand for the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine
Spitfire (powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin engine) propelled the company from a small
company into a major contender in aircraft manufacturing. In parallel with this the company
began development of the aero gas turbine, pioneered by Sir Frank Whittle.

In 1966 the company merged with Bristol Siddeley which consolidated the British aero-
engine industry. In the late 1960s the company launched the new RB211 engine, but early
problems led to the company being taken into state ownership and the floatation of the
motor car business in 1973. The company returned to private ownership in 1987 following
a number of mergers and acquisitions to become the only British company capable of
delivering power for use in the air, at sea and on land.

The company celebrated its centenary in 2004 with a series of special events for
customers, partners from education and industry, as well as employees, families and
friends in the UK, Scandinavia, North America and the Far East. The company opened its
6000 square metre Marine facility in Shanghai in 2005. The Rolls Royce Trent 1000 is the
only engine optimised specifically for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and was launched in
2006 and was taken up by All Nippon Airways (2011) and later used by the Air New
Zealand Boeing 787-9 (2014). In 2007 the MT30 marine gas turbine was selected to
power the US Navy’s first two ODG-1000 multi-mission destroyers.

In November of 2017, in a difficult year for Rolls Royce which was plagued with historic
bribery scandals, the company launched Trent 1000 Ten with Air New Zealand, Scoot and
Norwegian.
