IV. Design Summary

The boiler used is a single unit vertical tube once-through boiler. This once-
through boiler is for supercritical applications, usually with a capacity of 400 MW or
larger; the design features a water-cooled dry bottom furnace, superheater, reheater,
economizer, and air heater components — designed for variable superheater pressure
load cycling and base load operation. The maximum capacity of steam output of the unit
is typically 252 kg/s or higher, maximum pressure of 24.1 MPa, and maximum operating
temperature of 595 ˚C.
It operates on an inlet temperature and pressure of 46.51˚C and 17 MPa,
respectively and produces steam at 17 MPa and 550˚C. The efficiency of boiler is at
69.26% given the parameters at normal condition. The boiler can supply a 500MW coal-
fired steam power plant consuming 4,800,000 kg of fuel per day on a 24/7 operational
conditions to meet the demand on electricity needed to produce. The mass of steam
flowing is 281.20 kg/s. These parameters are mainly based on the need to produce an
estimated 500MW amount of output. Furthermore, the fuel is sub-bituminous coal with
an average higher heating value of 23,000 kJ/kg. There is not much available source of
higher-grade coal in the Philippines such as the anthracite. Even the neighboring Asian
countries utilize bituminous coal. There are local suppliers of coal in the country but
mostly are mixed with imported coal to get higher quality.
The vertical tube once-through boiler was chosen because of few advantageous
reasons. First, for a given output, it has lower carbon emissions. Second, the load
change rate capability of the system is not restricted by the turbine. Third, the boiler
feedwater pump power is significantly reduced at lower loads and lastly, the startup
times are shorter.

IV. Design Summary

The SST-5000 is capable for supercritical and ultra-supercritical steam
power plants. Due to its higher pressure and temperature ratings, power plant
efficiency increases more than 46 percent and overall performance is improved.

In steam power plants the SST-5000 consists of a combined high

pressure intermediate-pressure turbine, and one or two low-pressure turbines. It
is installed as a low- or high-level arrangement. There are various exhaust
configurations available to create an optimized plant layout: down-, single-sided,
and double- sided. Various extractions (up to 9 stages) create an optimized plant
layout with down-, single-sided or doubles sided exhaust.

The SST-5000 turbine can produce 200MW to 500MW power output.

Considering a 24/7 operational conditions, a mass of steam flowing from boiler
should be 281.2kg/s. The boiler can supply a 500MW coal-fired steam power
plant consuming 4,800,000 kg of fuel per day on a 24/7 mainly based on the
need to produce an estimated 500MW amount of output.

IV. Design Summary
GE Steam Power’s Moisture Separator Reheater is used in the design of a
Coal-Fired Steam Power Plant as the heat exchanger for reheating the steam
output of the High-Pressure Turbine. The dimensions of this reheater are as
follows: Shell diameter = 4.3m, Straight length = 18.6m, and has a weight of 260
tons during operation and 520 tons when flooded, and is crafted using carbon
steel plate as the main material.
Getting the design parameters of the reheater, the computed value for
entropy (s = 6.4416 kJ/kg) was used as a standpoint for the following inlet
parameters. Through the interpolation of the given inlet parameters, the following
outlet values are computed: t = 550 ˚C, p = 1 MPa, h = 3587.5 kJ/kg, and s =
7.89865 kJ/kg K. Hence, the reheater reduces the moisture of the steam coming
the high pressure turbine at t = 151.13˚C by increasing the temperature of the
steam to t = 550˚C at constant pressure, giving more efficiency in the reheat
cycle.
GE Steam Power Moisture separator reheater was used for the following
reason:
1. Meets the necessary conditions for the dimension in which the reheater
will be placed (at the upper right part of the boiler of the boiler).
2. The adaptability of the GE Steam Power Moisture separator reheater
can be redesigned to different ranges of sizes arrangements, and system design
requirements and it meet output requirements up to 1900 MW.
3. GE Steam Power is a very trusted company which is operating for 40
years in the power plant industries.

IV. Design Summary

The recommended condenser for a coal-fired steam power plant is
surface condenser, unit SQ-5 that has a capacity of 500MW. It has performance
to condense the exhaust steam from a steam turbine in order to maximize
efficiency, as well as to turn the turbine exhaust steam into pure water (known as
steam condensate) so that it may be reused as boiler feed water in the steam
generator or boiler

The surface condenser is the type most commonly used in modern power
plants and hence it will be the only one taken into consideration. The main heat
transfer occurs at the outside of the tube, cooling as opposed to condensing the
saturated steam and thus heating the CW inside the tube. The operating
temperature/pressure of the condenser is determined by the temperature,
45.81°C, of the water entering the condenser. As the temperature changes to
45.81°C, so does the condenser pressure and a drop in pressure increases the
plant's output and efficiency.

The steam enters from the exhaust Steam inlet and comes in contact with
the water carrying tubes. The water in the tubes has a circulating flow with the
19
values given from the steam table, with the inlet temperature of 45.81°C the

20
pressure at 10kPa with an enthalpy of 250.385117 kJ/kg and entropy of 7.89865.
As soon as the exhaust steam comes in contact with the water-cooled tubes, the
process of heat transfer begins, at the two horizontal ends of the cylindrical
vessel are two water storage tanks. Separation is provided by a baffle. The
exhaust steam intake feeds steam into the cylinder. Condensate can be removed
through a valve at the bottom of the condenser. Two perforated tubes run parallel
to the water transport tubes, making the outlet temperature at 45.81°C, with the
same pressure with an enthalpy of 191.86 kJ/kg and entropy of 0.6493 kJ/kg K.

IV. Design Summary

A cooling tower is a specialized heat exchanger that brings air and water
into direct contact in order to lower the temperature of the water. A tiny amount of
water evaporates as a result, lowering the temperature of the water pumped
through the tower.
Water is sent to the cooling tower through pipes that have been heated by
an industrial operation or in an air-conditioning condenser. It enters the cooling
tower at 45.81˚C. Water sprays at a rate of 4000 L/hr via nozzles onto "fill" banks,
slowing the flow of water through the cooling tower and exposing as much water
surface area as possible for optimum air-water interaction. Water is exposed to
23
air

24
as it passes through the cooling tower, which is drawn through the tower by an
electric motor-driven fan. Large fans are used in mechanical draft towers to push
or pull air through circulating water. The water falls downhill over the fill surfaces,
increasing the contact duration between the water and the air, allowing for
maximum heat transmission. The air in this case is has a dry-bulb temperature of
32˚C, a wet-bulb temperature at 27.32˚C at 70% RH.
With the cooling tower’s approximated heat dissipation of 2.15 M kHJ/hr it
has an efficiency of 41.17% with the range of cooling at 7.612333˚C, which is
within the ideal range of cooling at 5 C to 9˚C.

(Pressure relief valve PSI) X (2.31) X (1.03)
(Liquid Specific Gravity)
NPSHa = (absolute pressure in the feed water tank) +/- (elevation of minimum
water level in the tank above feed pump) – (Vapor Pressure) – (Suction line)

Boiler Temperature: 150C

FOR Boiler Feed Pump Horizontal multistage ring section pump (MHG), can
accommodate to 200C

For New RPM of Feed Pump,

Head Pressure (New) =(RPM New)2 ( Head Pressure 2New)

(RPM Old)

17MPa=(x)2 ( 36MPa2) = 4810 RPM is needed

(7000)

FOR NEW VOLUME FLOWRATE WITH VALUE OF 4043.57 m3/h, 4810

Here’s computation and Computed Value:

RPM(New) = RPM(Old) × Flow rate (New)

Flow rate (Old)

m
Xh m3
4810 = 7000 = 2778.510243
× m3 h
4043.57
h
For Pump Work,
W p = hB – h 5
Wp = 209.4989735 kJ/kg – 191.83 kJ/kg = 17.67 kJ/kg

IV. Design Summary

Torishima is the world's leading producer of pumps, and they provide it for
50 years. The pump includes a thorough description and specification to facilitate
the selection of the proper pump for each part of the steam power station. They
are committed to being the leading market leader in the field of pumping and to
providing customers with the greatest research, development, and technology.
And Japan is the number one country in terms of power plant equipment, as we
are all aware.
The design was easily find the proper pump and specifications for our 500
MW steam plant with the guidance from the Torishima firm because of the
characteristics they have provided for capacity, total head, operating temp,
operating pres, speed, motor rating, voltage, and size. This option allows us to
select the type of pumps required for all machine components. It also provides
28
product quality and a range of pump types that can be used for steam
powerplant, combined cycle power generation, biomass power generation, and
geothermal power generation.
For turbine going condenser or Cooling Water Pump we will be using
Horizontal axially split double-suction pump (CDM PUMP), for condenser going
feed water tank Condensate Pump we will be using Vertical mixed-¬ow
multistage pump with canister (MMTV PUMP), for feed water tank going to boiler
we will use two type of pumps Boiler Feed Pump &Boiler Circulation Pump. For
boiler feed pump we will be going to use Horizontal multistage ring section pump
(MHG), lastly for Boiler Circulation Pump we will going to use Glandless (seal
less) pump motor unit (HLV / HLAV). Then if required we can suggest using
Boiler Feed Booster ((CDM, CDKY) but optional only.
