                       Activity 6 -El Filibusterismo

Answer the following in not less than 100 words. Each item will be given 10
points each with a total of 30 points.

1.  Describe the 2nd Novel of Jose Rizal - "El Filibusterismo"

El Filibusterismo is the second book written by our Philippine national hero Dr. Jose
Rizal. It is the sequel to Noli me Tangere, and, like the first book, it was written in Spanish. El
Filibusterismo comes from the word "filibuster" which means a person who is against Roman
Catholicism. It is a political novel about revenge and revolution, and is composed of 38
Chapters. El Filibusterismo is a “work of healing” and a “book of thought.” It contains bitterness,
hatred, pain, violence, and sorrow that depict with the realistic color of the conditions of the
Philippines and Filipinos in the decadent days of Spanish rule. El Filibusterismo became an
instrument in awakening the spirit of Filipino nationalism and was responsible for paving the
ground for Philippine Revolution.
Rizal began writing El Filibusterismo in London, England, in 1890 and completed it in
Brussels, Belgium, in 1891. This book was written in honor of the "Three Martyrs," who are Fr.
Mariano Gomez, Fr. Jose Burgos, Fr. Jacinto Zamora (GomBurZa). Valentin Ventura in Paris
helped Rizal due to insufficient funds that's why the printing was suspended. The publishing then
resumed and was completed in September 1891. El Filibusterismo was first published in a
publication company in Ghent, Belgium. Dr. Rizal offered the original manuscript of the novel,
as well as an autographed copy of the book, to Valentin Ventura as a favor.

2.  What insights did you learn from the novel?

El Filibusterismo written by Rizal individual planted anger and develop a thirst for
revenge. I know that we all want to do good and we all want to be a good person
who chooses what is right over what is wrong. Being a good person is fulfilling,
not totally in the sense of blessings but in the sense that we know that we did
what is good and our heart just feels so light.
For me, Dr. Jose P. Rizal wanted to show us to do our best to never tie up
ourselves in doing bad. The El Filibusterismo also shared that violence is not the
answer to the problem that we encountered in our life. From what I observed, the
El Filibusterismo is dark and brutal with many happenings of killing, sexual
abuse, and suicide. We must think of it, we should not lower ourselves to that
level to cover ourselves with violence and rage or anger.
The novel El Filibusterismo is more dark and gloomy in theme compared to its predecessor, Noli
Me Tangere. This novel can make me a better person because the novel's message is violence
is never the answer. The novel's plot shows that. At first, Simon is planning to rescue Maria
Clara by all means necessary. That means even if he has to use force, he will do it just to
achieve his goal, contrary to what Ibarra believed in. In the end, Jose Rizal showed that
violence is never the answer to Simon’s death and Father Florentino's lamentations. The final
event showed that violence is never the answer to anything. It is just a way to create replace the
old problem with a new one

3.  Why is the novel El Filibusterismo dedicated to the three martyrs GOMBURZA?

The novel El Filibusterismo of Dr. Jose Rizal was dedicated to the "Three Martyrs", Fr. Mariano
Gomez, Fr. Jose Burgos, Fr. Jacinto Zamora also known as the GomBurZa. The three martyrs
were executed by garrote on February 17, 1872, in Bagumbayan, Philippines by Spanish
colonial authorities on charges of subversion arising from the 1872 Cavite mutiny. Rizal initially
wanted to be a Jesuit priest but when he heard about the execution of the three priest, the death
awakened strong feelings of anger and resentment among Filipinos, most especially to Rizal. Rizal then
dedicated El Filibusterismo, which the main theme is to convey the message that the system of
government in the Philippines governed by corrupt officials and dominated by the friars can lead to the
downfall of the Spaniards. Their deaths lead to the rise of the novel El Filibusterismo which opened the
mind, hearts and enlightening society, at bringing the Filipinos closer to the truth that the colonization
would be at end, and sparked the beginning of the Propaganda Movement.

Noli Me Tangere and El

Filibusterismo vary in many
aspects, although they are written
by the
same author and are supposed
to be dealing with the same
story and have the same
characters. The Noli Me Tangere is
a romantic novel. It is a “work of
the heart” and ”a book of
feeling”. It has freshness, color,
humor, lightness and wit.
Whereas, El Filibusterismo is a
political novel. It is a “work of
heal” and a “book of the thought”.
It contains bitterness, hatred,
pain, violence and sorrow. Jose
Rizal’s original intention was to
make the El Filibusterismo
longer than the Noli Me Tangere.
However, El Filibusterismo is
shorter than Noli. It contains 38
chapters whereas 64 chapters of
Noli. There were many opinions
as to which is the superior
novel the Noli or the Fili. Rizal
himself considered the Noli as the
superior to the Fili as novel.
Marcelo H. del Pilar and Retana,
Rizal’s first Spanish biographer,
also believed that Noli is
superior.
However, other including
Blumentritt, Graciano Lopez Jaena
and Dr. Rafael Palma against the
Opinion of Rizal. They believed
the Fili is the superior to the Noli.
In Lopez Jaena’s letter he said
that the Fili was superior because
of its exquisite delicate, literary
style, its easy and correct
dialogue, its phraseology, vigorous
and elegant and its profound ideas
and sublime thoughts.
However Jaena advised Rizal to
write another novel because he
was not satisfied with Fili as
political novel. The issue of which
is the superior novel is purely
academic. Noli and El Fili are
good novels from the point of
view of history. Both depict
with realistic colors the actual
conditions of the Philippines and
Filipinos the decadent days of
Spanish rule.
Both are instrumental in
awakening the spirit of Filipino
nationalism and are responsible
in
paving the ground for Philippine
Revolution that brought about the
downfall of Spain. Neither the
Noli nor the Fili is superior
to one another, Mariano Ponce
told Rizal that Fili was
indeed
excellent novel but it was
marvelous like all the brilliant
productions of his pen. He also
said that
it was a true twin
of the Noli.
