Abstract
The mother liquor (Sp. gr. 1.251-1.262) after the recovery of common salt contains bromine typically in

the range of 2.0-2.5 gL-1. The recovery from such dilute solution is not economically physible. The mixed

salt like carnallite and kainite also contain bromide. The end bittern (enriched with magnesium chloride)

is a mother liquor of mixed salt of a density from 37.2-37.30Bé (Sp. gr.1.347-1.348) contains on an

average 119 gpl. of magnesium and 8.2 –8.4 gpl. of bromide. The recovery of bromine in the form of

MgBr in end bittern is 75%, the rest of which losses in mixed salt as potassium bromide and magnesium

bromide hexahydrate. The loss of bromine in kainite mixed is more than 25%. The losses are more in

sel’s mixt and in crude salt and that cannot be recovered. Recovery of bromine can be increased if we

promote carnallite formation, as subsequent carnallite processing for the recovery of potash will recycle

bromine. The kainite mixed salt is crystallized out in the range of 34.5-35.0oBé (Sp. gr. 1.314-1.320)

while that of carnallite at higher concentration at which point the bromide concentration in the bittern is

the highest achievable without significant losses in solid precipitates. It is demonstrated by laboratory

experiment and with the help of phase diagram of the K2Cl2/MgCl2/H2O saturated with NaCl and quinary

system of NaCl + KCl + MgCl2 +MgSO4 + H2O that bromide recovery can be enhanced if carnallite

formation is promoted by increasing the rations of [Mg2+] to [K+] and [Cl-] to [SO42-].
