WHY SHOULD WE - CELEBRATE HOLI WITH COLOURS

Every festival has its own significance. Holi is celebrated
in the month of Phalgun & is associated with colours
signifying the victory over evil. Apart from the puranic
story of Prahlad, it also has biological importance. Holi
marks the end of winter. As you all know, while the chill
days of winter brings in laziness & inactiveness, the
festival of Holi brings to us beautiful life with colours,
makes us active & helps us to overcome our tardiness.

Various colours used for playing Holi signify Purity, Vitality, Calmness, Piousness, Friendship,
Brightness & Vibrancy of life. Beautiful colours provided by nature, teaches us to blend &
adapt to various situations & to mingle with people of different hues. Celebration of Holi
with colours brings closeness, harmony, wins hearts, spread love & fragrance all around.
A small note of caution! You should play Holi with dry & natural home made colours, made
up of flowers, fruits, vegetables etc so that your skin is well protected. Please avoid any
chemical, permanent dyes, oil colours etc which are harmful to the skin, eyes & hair. Holi is
played to bring in harmony & friendship & not to cause harm to anyone. Hence we should
maintain & imbibe the true meaning & spirit of colours while playing Holi.
Wish you all a very Bright, Vibrant & Colourful Holi

Rangila Loom / Disc for Bracelet

Needed Materials: 7 strands of different coloured wool or embroidery threads, 1 piece

of cardboard, pair of scissors, pencil, beads, compass( to make circle).

Method:

1. Draw a circle on a piece of cardboard using compass or any round glass. Cut out the
circle, then divide it in eight parts and cut 1/2" slits at the edge as shown in pic 2. And poke
a hole through the center of the circle.

2. Line up the ends of the 7 threads then tie a simple knot. Poke the knotted end of the
threads through the hole in the center of the disc and clip the each piece of thread in each
slit, leave one slit empty as shown in pic 3.

3. Now comes the braiding so hold the disc in a way so the empty slit is at top. Unclip the
the 3rd thread and clip it in to the top slit, now the 3rd slit will be empty so, rotate the
whole disc so that the empty slit is at the top again, as shown in pic 5.

4. Now just keep repeating step 3, as shown in pic4 and pic5, and your bracelet will grow.

Fun Science Experiments: Does Orange float or sink?

Does an orange float or sink when placed in water? Seems like a fairly straight forward
question, but is it? Give this fun density science experiment for kids a try and answer the
question while learning a unique characteristic of oranges.

What you'll need:

An orange
A deep bowl or container
Water

Instructions:
Fill the bowl with water.
Put the orange in the water and watch what happens.
Peel the rind(skin) from the orange and try the same.

What's happening?

The first time you put the orange in the bowl of water it probably floated on the surface.
But after you removed the rind, however, it probably sunk to the bottom. why?

The rind of an orange is full of tiny air pockets which help give it a lower density than
water, making it float to the surface. Removing the rind (and all the air pockets) from the
orange increases its density higher than that of water, making it sink.

Density is the mass of an object relative to its volume. Objects with a high amount of
matter in a certain volume have a high density, while objects with a smaller amount of
matter in the same volume, relatively have a low density.

WHO IS HAPPY? THE PEACOCK OR THE CROW?

A crow lived in the forest and was absolutely satisfied in life. But one day he saw a swan.
“This swan is so white,” he thought, “and I am so black. This swan must be the happiest
bird in the world.”

He expressed his thoughts to the swan. “Actually,” the swan replied, “I was feeling that I
was the happiest bird around until I saw a parrot, which has two colours. I now think the
parrot is the happiest bird in creation.” The crow then approached the parrot. The parrot
explained, “I lived a very happy life until I saw a peacock. I have only two colours, but the
peacock has multiple colours.”

The crow then visited a peacock in the zoo and saw that hundreds of people had gathered
to see him. After the people had left, the crow approached the peacock. “Dear peacock,”
the crow said, “you are so beautiful. Every day thousands of people come to see you. When
people see me, they immediately shoo me away. I think you are the happiest bird on the
planet.”

The peacock replied, “I always thought that I was the most beautiful and happy bird on the
planet. But because of my beauty, I am entrapped in this zoo. I have examined the zoo
very carefully, and I have realised that the crow is the only bird not kept in a cage. So for
past few days I have been thinking that if I were a crow, I could happily roam everywhere.”

That’s our problem too. We make unnecessary comparison with others and become sad.
We don’t value what God has given us. This all leads to the vicious cycle of unhappiness.
Learn to be happy in what you have instead of looking at what you don’t have. There will
always be someone who will have more or less than you have. Person who is satisfied with
what he/she has, is the happiest person in the world.

We should remember that external qualities like colours are not to be compared. Internal
qualities or "gunas" are more important. This is beautifully explained in the following
subhashita.
