Adjectives: Definition
DEFINITION:
An adjective is a describing word that is used with a noun and pronoun to add something to its
meanings

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
ADJECTIVE OF QUALITY:
Adjective of quality or Descriptive Adjective shows the kind quality or state of a thing.
Example
ADJECTIVE OF QUANTITY
Adjective of Quantity shows the quantity of a noun: It shows how much a thing is meant.
Example:
ADJECTIVE OF NUMBER
Adjective of number or Numeral Adjective shows how many persons or things are meant by in
what order or thing stands.

Underline the adjectives in the following sentences and state their kinds.
1. He is an honest man

1 Positive:
The positive degree of an Adjective is the Adjective of its simple form. It simply expresses a
quality. It is used when no comparison is made.
Example
1. He is clever.
2. She is looking beautiful.
3. His dog is a loyal animal.
4. The poor woman has no money.
2.COMPARATIVE:
The comparative degree denotes quality to a higher degree than positive. It is used when two
things are compared.
Example
3.SUPERLATIVE:
Superlative degree denotes the highest degree of quality. It is used when more than two things
are compared.

EXERCISE
Most adjectives form the Comparative Degree by adding "er” to the Positive and the
Superlative Degree by adding "est” to the Positive.
If Positive Degree ends in "e", only "r" or "st" are added to form Comparative and
Superlative Degree.
If the Positive Degree ends in "y" preceded by a consonant the "y" is changed into "i" before
adding "er" or "est".
If the Positive Degree ends in a single consonant, preceded by a short vowel, the final
consonant is doubled before adding "er" or "est".
The following adjectives are compared irregularly, that is their Comparative and Superlative
Degree is not formed from the Positive.
