placed in a controlled environment in which the temperature is

maintained at 100c. The convection heat transfer coefficient is

10w/m2.c . Calculate the time required for the ball to be 150c.

temperature of 25c and suddenly immersed in a liquid at 150c with

Q3:An aluminum sphere 5 cm in diameter is initially at uniform

temperature of 40c. It is suddenly exposed to an outer space

radiation at 0k (no convection), assuming the surface of the

aluminum blackened and lumped capacity analysis applies, calculate

the time required for the temperature of the sphere to drop to -240c.

environment.How much energy has been removed per unit area

Calculate the temperature at a radius 1.25cm and the heat loss per

unit length 1 min after the cylinder is exposed to the environment

Q7:A plate of stainless steel has a thickness of 3cm and initially in

uniform temperature at 500c. The plate is suddenly exposed to


convection environment on both sides at 40c and h=150w/m 2.c

Calculate the times for the center and the face to reach 120c.

uniform in temperature at 400c.It is then suddenly exposed to

h=1200w/m2.c , how long does it take the center temperature to cool

to 80c. Also calculate the heat loss per unit length.

Q11:A fused quartz sphere has a thermal diffusivity of 9.5x10-7m2/s,a

diameter of 2.5cm and k=1.52w/m.c. The sphere is initially at a


uniform temperature of 25c and suddenly exposed to convection

environment at 200c . if h=110w/m2.c.Calculate the temperature at

the center and at radius of 6.4mm after a time of 3 min.

Q12:Lead shot may be manufactured by dropping molten led droplets

into water. Asumming that the droplets have properties of solid lead
at 300c Calculate the time for the center temperature to reach 120c

when the water is at 100c with h=5000w/m2.c , d=1.5mm.
