Measurement Equal Position

Parts Ten Divide

IV. Discussion:
Using some words you have unlocked from the previous activity. Complete the sentence
by putting the appropriate word in the blank.
Decile divide ten parts
_____ is the nine scores which ____ the data into ____ equal _____.
Decile is the nine scores which divide the data into ten equal parts.

Decile for Ungrouped Data

The decile are the nine score points which divide a distribution into ten equal parts.

D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6 D7 D8 D9
D1 is the score which has 10% o the scores below it and 90% above it.
D2 is the score which has 20% of the scores below it and 80% above it
D3 is the score which has 30% of the scores below it and 70% above it.
.
.
D9 is the score which has 90% o the scores below it and 10% above it

Example 1. Aling Marie is a fish vendor in Toril Public Market. She sells bangus and
tilapia, her sales in the first 10 days in this year are listed below. Her average sale per
day lies on the 4th decile.
360 520 300 440 460 540 560 580 620 200
Find the 4th decile.
Solution:
1. First, arrange the scores in ascending order
200 300 360 440 460 520 540 560 580 620
2. Second, find its D4 position. Use the formula and round off to the nearest integer.
Position of Dk = k/10 (n + 1)
Position of D4 = 4/10 (10 + 1)
= 4/10 (11)th
= 44/10
=4.4 or 4th position
The computed value is with decimal which is 4.4 so we need to do linear interpolation.
3. Third, Interpolating/locating the exact position of the score.
Step 1: subtract the 4th data from the 5th data 460 – 440 = 20
Step 2: multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the second step (position of
the 4th decile .4 (20) = 8
Step 3: Add the result in step 2 by the smaller number/value (step 1)
440 + 8 = 448 – value of 4th decile
Interpreting the result:
Aling Marie should be happy because 60% of her sale is above the average sale
Example 2. Aling Nena sells kalamay in the town plaza. The following number of pieces
of kalamay Aling Nena sold for 10 days.
35 25 50 20 40 45 30 35 40 30
Find and interpret the results of 3rd decile and 7th decile
Solution:
1. 20 25 30 30 35 35 40 40 45 50
Position of D3= 3/10 (10 + 1)th
= 3/10 ( 11)
=33/10 = 3.3 or 3rd position
The computed value is with decimal which is 3.3, so we need to do linear interpolation:
Step 1: subtract the 3rd data from the 4th data. 30 – 30 = 0
Step 2: multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in second step (position of 3 rd
decile)
.3 (0) = 0
Step 3: add the result in step 2 by the smaller number/value (step 1)
30 + 0 = 30- value of the 3rd decile.
Interpreting the result: Aling Nena’s sale for ten days is only 30%.
Solution for D7
Position of D7= 7/10 (10 + 1)
= 7/10 (11)
= 77/10
= 7.7 or 8th position
Interpolate:
1. 40 – 40 = 0
2. .7 (0) = 0
3. 40 + 0 = 40- value of 7th decile
Interpreting the result: Aling Nena’s sale for ten days is 80%.
Activity : Find your Height
The height of grade 10 students was recorded in their physical education class
150 170 165 155 158 163 168 174 178 180
Find the value then interpret the result of the following:
1. D3
2. D8
3. D9
Abstraction/Generalization
• What is decile? Deciles are the nine score in which divide into ten equal parts.
• What are the steps in finding the decile?
1. Arrange the data in ascending order
2. Find the unit partition of a decile
3. If the result is in decimal form, interpolate.
• What are the steps in applying linear interpolation?
• Subtract the two data based on the result of the position of decile
• Multiply the part of the decimal to the result in step 1
• Add the smaller value of the position of decile to the result in step 2

V. Evaluation:
Mrs. Lopez is a veterinarian. One morning, she ask her secretary to record the service time
for 15 costumers.
The following are service times in minutes 20, 35, 55, 28, 46, 32, 25, 56, 55, 28, 37, 60, 47,
52, 17.
Find the value of the 2nd decile, 6th decile and 8th decile.
