WHAT IS STRESS?
INTRODUCTION
Stress is a part of day to day living of every individual. The college students may
experience stress in meeting the academic demands, people on the job, business men may
suffer stress to reach office in time and to complete the project on time and even the house
hole ladies may experience stress in managing the home affairs and to look for the maid
servant. The reasons for the stress differ from person to person. The stress people
experience should not be necessarily treated as harmful. An optimum amount of stress can
always act as an energizer or motivator and propel people to apply the efforts and
complete the work. But a high level of stress can be serious threat to the personality trails
of the individual and can cause physiological and social problems.

Definition
Stress is the “wear and tear” our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually
changing environment; it has physical and effects on us and create positive or negative

WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL STRESS?
Organizational stress can have a profound effect on production and motivation in the
workplace. Worries about job security or the demands of a heavy workload increase stress
levels and cause a variety of emotional and physical ailments. When stress factors, or
stressors, are coupled with ineffective or uncaring management, stress can become a problem
that extends to the entire department or company. Identifying signs of organizational stress is
the first step in designing a strategy to address problems.

COMMON CAUSES OF WORKPLACE STRESS INCLUDE:

 Fear of being laid off
 More overtime due to staff cutbacks
 Pressure to perform to meet rising expectations but with no increase in job
satisfaction
 Pressure to work at optimum levels- all the time
 Lack of control over how you do your work
 If working environment or other employees behavior is not good

WHAT IS STRESS MANAGEMENT

Page | 3
Stress is the physical and mental response of the body. It is the result of our
reaction to outside events, not necessarily the events themselves. Stress is a normal,
psychological and physical reaction to the ever increasing demands of life. Stress
management aimed at controlling persons level of stress, usually for the purpose of
improving everyday functioning. Stress can be caused by wide variety of factors and the
effect of possible sources of stress will vary with each individual. Stress management is a
normal part of life. It reduces productivity, physical and emotional health, so it’s important
to find ways to keep it under control. Employees stress is growing concern for
organization today. Stress can be defined as a lively circumstance, opportunities or loss of
something they desire and for which the consequence is both unpredictable as well as
crucial.

Stress isn’t always bad. A little bit of stress can help you stay focused, energetic, and
able to meet new challenges in the workplace. It’s what keeps you on your toes during a
presentation or alert to prevent accidents or costly mistakes. But in today’s hectic world,
the workplace too often seems like an emotional roller coaster. Long hours, tight
deadlines, and ever increasing demands can leave you feeling worried, drained, and
overwhelmed. And when stress exceeds your ability to cope, it stops being helpful and
starts causing damage to your job satisfaction.

RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY

Research methodology may be understood as a science of studying how research
is done scientifically. We study the various steps that are generally adopted by a
researcher in studying the research problem along with the logic behind them.

SAMPLING METHOD:

Sampling method indicates how the sample units are selected. There are various types
of sample designs which can be covered under the two board groups random or probability or
non-random sample.

SOURCE OF DATA:

Data is collected in two types:

1) Primary data
2) Secondary data

PRIMARY DATA:

The primary data are which are collected afresh and for the first time. And happen to b
original in character. The primary data of be collected for the study are-

Page | 14
Questionnaire: A set of questionnaire is prepared for the cause of collecting different
information related to the pre-determined objectives. The questionnaire prepared for
employees. The format of questionnaire is structured and unstructured.

Direct Personal Interview: Under this method of collecting data there is face-to-face context
with the person from whom the information is obtained. The data collected are from the
respective selected employees. The pattern used is structured and Indirect Interview

SECONDARY DATA:
Secondary data means data that are already available i.e. they refer the data, which
have already been collected and analyzed by someone else. When the researcher utilizes
secondary data, then he has to look into various sources from where he can obtain them, in
this case he is certainly not confronted with the problems that are usually associated with the
collection of original data. Secondary data may ether be published data or unpublished data.

Usually published data are available in

1) Books
