Three piece bogies used today
• Today many Conventional three-piece bogies
are still placed in service all over the world.
• The Swing motion bogie is used for transports
of cars and other goods were ride quality is
important.
• For heavy haul operations in North America
both the Conventional bogie and the List bogie
are used.
• In South Africa and Sweden, the Scheffel bogie
is chosen
Swing Motion Bogie
• This bogie was designed to improve lateral ride by providing the
equivalent of swing hangers
• The key feature of this bogie design is the disconnection of the
lateral track inputs from the wagon.
• The bolster is supported on springs through a spring plank,
which is carried on longitudinal knife edges at the bottom of the
bolster opening in the side frames.
• The side frames have knife edges in the pedestal area that
engage with the bearing adapters.
Swing Motion Bogie
• Hence the side frames function as swing links.
• The spring plank interconnecting the side frames prevents any
tendency of the side frames to lozenge.
• A pivot between the axle boxes and the side frames is also
included so that the side frames can pivot or swing to
accommodate lateral motion of the bolster.
• The swing motion gives increased lateral stability at speeds up
to 176 km/h and is claimed to reduce wheel and rail wear,
reduce rolling resistance and forces on track and vehicle body
compared with standard three‐piece bogies.

Scheffel’s HS Bogie
• At first the horizontal
motion of the frame is
decoupled from the
wheelsets by horizontally
soft primary suspension.
• Then the axle boxes are
interconnected through
sub‐frames or arms by
elastic elements that
support their radial
position in curves, but
resist in‐phase yaw
1 ‐ side frame; 2 ‐ bolster; 3 ‐ wheelset; • having the axle load of
4 – primary suspension;
5 – elastic connection between sub‐frames
32 T
Scheffel’s HS Bogie (1970)
• The bogie retained the
three-piece arrangement
and introduced a
subframe mounted direct
to the journals and linked
diagonally by cross-
anchors
• The primary suspension in
the form of rubber shear
pads between the
subframe and the side
frames

3 ‐ Rubber shear pad
Scheffel’s HS Bogie – Suspension Design
List Bogie

• A pair of steering arms interconnected by an elastomeric

bushing located off centre inside the bolster
Frame Braced Bogie
Frame Braced bogie
• The conventional three-
piece bogie is modified by
introducing shear pads
between the bearing
adapters and side frames
• Diagonal frame-bracing rods
connecting the side frames
through resilient bushings
• The design is developed to
reduce the extra weight and
costs added to the bogie
when retrofitting existing
conventional three-piece
bogies
Other high Speed Freight Bogies
LTF 25 Bogie

Max. speed= 120 kmph at 25 T axle load

• Inside bearing journals

• 813 mm dia wheel with disc brakes
• Stiff coil springs in primary suspension
• Rubber springs and hydraulic dampers in secondary suspension
TF 25 Bogie
TF 25 Bogie
• The H-shape bogie frame is made up of two side frames and a
bolster which are fastened together by bolts.
• A radial arm connected to the frame by a rubber bushing and
a coil spring allows for a combination of lateral and
longitudinal movements of the wheelsets.
• Hydraulic dampers are fitted between the side frame and the
radial arm providing vertical damping.
• Two secondary springs and a traction centre connect the
bogie to the wagon body.
• The springs consist of a rubber/steel chevron sandwich and
are vertically stiff but allow lateral and longitudinal motions.
• The traction centre is attached to the bogie via a longitudinal
traction rod and a lateral damper
RC25NT Bogie

• Eisenbahn Laufwerke Halle (Germany) has developed the RC25NT self‐steering

• 25 T axle load three-piece bogie ( welded truck) with direct inter‐axle linkages
• Presented at the Innotrans exhibition in 2010.
• The bogie has horizontally soft rubber bushes in the primary suspension and
flexicoil dual rate springs with friction damping in the secondary suspension.
• The bogie is equipped with disk brakes.
• The aim of the development was to build a bogie capable of stable running up to
120 km/h, keeping low noise criteria and negotiating curves with minimum of
wear. (running at 100 Kmph)
DRRS Bogie
• Designed to run at 160
km/h with 18 T axle-
load
• Reduced acceleration
levels for the
transported goods
• Allow radial steering
for the wheelsets on
curved track
• Low noise emissions
• Low weight, low first
cost and low
maintenance cost are
important
DRRS Bogie
• The primary suspension
Maximum axle‐load ranges from 22.5 t at
100 km/h to 18.375 t at 160 km/h. consists of two rubber
springs above each other
• The two rubber springs are
placed with a longitudinal
displacement between
them
• A vertical load on the
rubber springs give a
resulting longitudinal force
that acts on the axle-box
through a pusher providing
vertical and lateral friction
damping approximately
proportional to the vehicle
load.

Futuristic Bogies
LEILA Bogie

• The LEILA bogie is a passive radial steering bogie

with a maximum axle load of 22.5 t and was
developed between 2000 and 2005 during a German
and Swiss research project
• The aim to develop this bogie was:
– to reduce the noise emissions of freight wagons;
– to reduce the mass of a bogie to be under 4 t and
– to reduce significantly wear and running resistance.
