disassembled and then rearranged to
make new and different structures.
c. Provide evidence from
observations to construct an
explanation that some changes in
matter caused by heating or cooling
can be reversed and some changes are
irreversible. (Clarification statement:
Changes in matter could include
heating or freezing of water, baking a
cake, boiling an egg.)

Activity Materials
Coke Float Experiment: Students completed Coke, Ice cream, cups, spoons, Coke
a prediction page before we started the float worksheet
experiment. They had to fill in a chart to say
what state of matter each item is, if they think
it will change during the experiment, and an
explanation for how it will change. We started
the coke float experiment and had the students
observe what happened when the soda was
Engage mixed with the ice cream. They were able to
discuss with their classmates what was
happening before they enjoyed their treat.
After the experiment, they drew what their
float looked like and labeled the states of
matter for each part. We also completed a
reflection activity as a whole group to discuss
what happened and how the states of matter
changed.
Team Anchor Chart: Students work in teams Chart paper, markers
to describe and draw examples of melting,

freezing, and evaporation based on what we
have learned.
Explain Opinion Writing: Students are completing an Opinion Writing: Read aloud: The
opinion writing on why their favorite crayon Day the Crayons Quit, opinion writing
