This product is designed only for specific applications as defined in the instructions and should not be modified or used for any
manner not described in these instructions. Use only recommended accessories. Before using the Edge Banding Machine: READ,
UNDERSTAND and FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY WARNINGS. KEEP THESE INSTRUCTIONS READILY

> Always confirm that you are using the most recent version of

> Before using another tool with this product, always read,
understand and follow the instructions and safety warnings
in the owner’s manual for that tool. If you do not have the
owner’s manual, obtain one from the tool’s manufacturer

• Proper and safe handling, storage and disposal of

> Before using this product, review and verify that all tools to be
used with it have safety equipment installed and are in proper
working order as defined by the tool’s owner’s manual.

• Use safety equipment such as featherboards, push
sticks and push blocks, etc., when appropriate;
• Maintain proper footing at all times and do not overreach;
• Do NOT force woodworking tools.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

When using electrical appliances, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:

Failure to understand and follow all safety warnings and instructions

could result in fire, electrical shock or serious injury.

Safety Rules
> To avoid risk of fire, NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING
UNATTENDED. TURN POWER OFF. Don’t leave tool
until it comes to a complete stop.
> The heat gun produces extremely high temperatures
and will cause severe burns. Do NOT allow combustible
materials to contact the heat gun. Keep hands away
from the nozzle of the heat gun when the gun is on.
> With extended use the Heat Shield (see image on p. 5)
may become hot. Use caution to avoid burns.
> DON’T USE IN A DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don’t
use power tools in damp or wet locations or expose them to
rain. Do NOT use near flammable liquids or materials. Keep
work area well-lighted.
> When done using the edge bander, shut off the heat gun
and allow to cool properly before storing the Edge Banding
Machine. If you do not plan to use the machine for a while,
it is best to unplug the heat gun from its power source.
> KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order.
> REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form a
habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches
are removed from the tool before turning it on.
> KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and
benches invite accidents.
> KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be kept a
safe distance from work area.

> To reduce the risk of electric shock, this product has been
equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the
other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way.
If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug.
If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install
the proper outlet. Do NOT change the plug in any way.
> USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Make sure your
extension cord is in good condition. When using an
extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry
the current your product will draw. An undersized cord will
cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in loss of power and
overheating. Table below shows the correct size to used
depending on cord length and nameplate ampere rating. If
in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the
gauge number, the heavier the cord.

> NO ADJUSTMENT SHOULD BE MADE UNTIL THE
TOOL HAS BEEN STOPPED. Make sure that the heat
gun is turned off and unplugged before setting up or
making any adjustments.
> MAKE WORKSHOP KID-PROOF with padlocks or master
switches, or by removing starter keys.
> DON’T FORCE THE TOOL. It will do the job better and
safer at the rate for which it was designed.
> USE THE RIGHT TOOL. Don’t force a tool or attachment to
do a job for which it was not designed.
> WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wear loose clothing,
gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets or other jewelry that
could get caught in moving parts. Nonslip footwear is
recommended. Wear protective hair covering to
contain long hair.
> ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also use a face
or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty. Everyday
eyeglasses have only impact-resistant lenses;
they are NOT safety glasses.
> SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work
when practical. It’s safer than using your hand, and it
frees both hands to operate tool.
> DON’T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance
at all times.

> MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and
clean for best and safest performance. Follow instructions
for lubricating and changing accessories.
> DISCONNECT TOOLS before servicing and when changing
accessories, such as blades, bits, cutters and the like.
> REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTIONAL STARTING.
Make sure switch is in off position before plugging in.
> USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult the
owner’s manual for recommended accessories. The use
of improper accessories may cause risk of personal injury.
> NEVER STAND ON TOOL. Serious injury could
occur if the tool is tipped or if the cutting tool
is unintentionally contacted.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
> A small quantity of smoke may occur when the tool is used
for the first time. This smoke is caused by binding agents
released from the heater’s insulating film during the first
time of use. The area you are working in should be
well-ventilated when using the tool for the first time.
> The heat gun is protected from overheating: The thermal
cut-out completely shuts down the tool if it is overloaded.

> CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the
tool, a guard or other part that is damaged should be
carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly
and perform its intended function – check for alignment of
moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts,
mounting and any other conditions that may affect its
operation. A guard or other part that is damaged
should be properly repaired or replaced.
> The mark to the right indicates that this product
is protected by double insulation - When servicing,
use only identical replacement parts
> Use ONLY with wood or plastic edge-banding materials
that are backed with a hot-melt glue.
> Maximum edge banding width: 21⁄4".
> Make sure that your edge-banding material is at least
as wide as – and, preferably, a bit wider than – the
workpiece being banded.

TOOL HAS BEEN STOPPED. Make sure that the heat
gun is turned off and unplugged before setting up or
making any adjustments.

Use ONLY with wood or plastic

edge-banding materials that are backed with a
5 hot-melt glue.

Maximum edge banding width: 21⁄4".

1. Attach the Outrigger Support (1) to the back of the Table

Assembly with two M6 x 10 Hex Socket Cap Screws (2) and
Washers (3). Use the included Hex Wrench (8) to tighten.

2. Thread the M8 Hex Nut (6) well onto the M8 Cap Screw (5).
Then insert the Cap Screw in the hole in the Outrigger
7 Support (1) from the underside and thread on the Outrigger
Post (7). (This is easier to do if you tip the machine up.
Fig. 1.) Adjust the Hex Nut up or down until the end of
1 the Cap Screw is on the work surface and the Hex Nut is
tight to the underside of the Outrigger Support. Fig. 2.
This will keep the outrigger from tipping. Thread the
Outrigger Post fully onto the other end of the Cap Screw.

3. Set the roll of edge banding material over the Outrigger

6 Post (7). Make sure the roll is oriented so that the side with
the hot-melt adhesive faces the heat gun when the edge
banding is fed into the machine. Fig. 3.

4. Use the Hex Wrench (8) to loosen the bolts securing the
5 Lower Edge Band Guides and adjust the Guides so they
4 are set slightly below the level of the aluminum table. Fig. 4
and Fig. 5. (A tip: Use your workpiece as a gauge to verify
the setting. Place the workpiece flat on the table and advance
the edge banding. Make sure that the edge banding overhangs
the edge of the workpiece at both top and bottom. Then retract
Fig. 2 the edge banding.) Once the Lower Edge Band Guides are in
position, tighten the bolts. They should rarely need to be
adjusted after this.

Adhesive face toward

the heat gun You will need to adjust the position of the
Upper Edge Band Guide anytime you switch to a banding
with a different width.

5. Use the Hex Wrench (8) to loosen the bolts securing the
Upper Edge Band Guides and adjust the Guides up or down
to fit the width of your edge-banding material. Make sure
that the banding material is able to move freely through
the Guides after the adjustments are made. Once they are
in position, tighten the bolt. Fig. 6.

6. The table has rubberized feet to limit sliding, but it also is

equipped with z-shaped brackets with mounting holes. If
greater stability is desired, or if mounting permanently, the
Edge-Banding Machine can be secured to a work surface
with suitable fasteners (not included).

Operation

> Read and understand the enclosed Steinel manual that

relates to model HG 2220 E for additional safety
and use information.

Lower Edge Band Guides
> The heat gun produces extremely high temperatures

Make sure that your edge-banding material is at least as

wide as – and, preferably, a bit wider than – the workpiece
being banded.

1. Feed the edge-banding material forward until the front end just
emerges from the Upper and Lower Edge Band Guides. Bottom edge of material should be
just slightly below the edge of table

The heat gun has a sliding switch that

turns the gun on and controls the rate of airflow, plus a Fig. 5
numbered dial that controls the temperature. For best
results, start with low airflow and low heat settings and
make adjustments according to your experience with
the edge bander and the edge-banding material you
are using. (Different brands of edge-banding could have
different adhesives with different melting properties.)

2. Push the sliding switch on the heat gun to the first “on”
position. Start with the temperature dial at “2” and slowly
turn the dial to get a feel for how the temperature increases.
The higher the heat setting, the faster you must feed the
workpiece past the roller.

 3. As the hot-melt adhesive softens, feed the edge banding
material up to the pinch roller. Fig. 7.

4. Place the workpiece on the machine table, edge against

the fence, and push it forward to contact the edge-banding
material. As you advance the workpiece, the pinch roller
will press the edge-banding material against the edge
of the workpiece, bonding the two surfaces.

5. Guide the workpiece at a moderate speed. Fig. 8. Be sure the

hot melt adhesive is bonding to the work. If the feed speed is
too fast, or the heat gun is set too low, the bond will be poor.
Make adjustments as needed to obtain a good bond.

6. As the work advances, the edge may be rested against the

outfeed fence and the pinch roller. Always maintain pressure
on the pinch roller while you are edge banding.

7. When the trailing end of the workpiece is about 21⁄2" from

the pinch roller, depress the veneer cutting knob to cut the
edge banding process until the entire edge of the work has
edge banded. The end of the edge banding material will Fig. 7
extend beyond the edge of the work slightly. This will
allow you to make a clean cut with some other cutting
or sanding tool. Fig. 9.

8. Shut off the heat gun and allow it to cool properly before
storing the Edge Banding Machine. If you do not plan to
use the machine for a while, it is best to unplug the heat
gun from its power source.

Maintenance/Troubleshooting
> If hot-melt adhesive accumulates on the Edge Band Guides,
advancing the edge-banding material can become more
difficult. To clean the Guides, remove the edge banding
material from the Guides. Set the heat gun to a medium
setting and turn it on. As the heat gun softens the adhesive,
peel it from the guides with a putty knife. Be careful not to
scratch the edge of the band guides. The guide must remain
smooth for best results.

> The infeed and outfeed fences are adjusted so that they are
back about 1/16" (1.5mm) from the crown of the pinch roller.
They are used only for support and do not have to line up with
any reference point. The fence should be adjusted correctly Fig. 8
when the edge banding system is delivered.

> If the edge banding does not adhere to the workpiece, the
heat gun may not be hot enough. It is also possible that you’re
feeding the workpiece too fast for the heat setting on the heat
gun. Try reducing the feed rate or increasing the heat level.

Storage

> When done using the edge bander, shut off the heat
gun and allow to cool properly before storing the Edge
Banding Machine. If you do not plan to use the machine
for a while, it is best to unplug the heat gun from its
power source.
