ENGINEERING MECHANICS
(Civil Engineering & Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 60
Note: Answer one question from each unit.
All questions carry equal marks.
6 × 10 = 60M
UNIT-I
1. Three cylinders are piled in a rectangular ditch as shown in Figure 1. Neglecting friction,
determine the reaction between cylinders A and the vertical wall. Take weights as A=1000N
B=1500N, C=1200N and also determine the reaction between cylinders. (10M)

(OR)
2. Determine the amount and direction of the smallest force P required to start the wheel in
Figure 2. Over the block. What is the reaction at the block? (10M)

UNIT-II
3. Determine the range of values which the mass m may have so that the 100 kg block shown in
the Figure 3. Will neither start moving up the plane nor slip down the plane. Assume the
coefficient of static friction between the contact surfaces to be 0.3. (10M)

4. A ladder AB of length 10m and weight W=1000kN stands in a vertical plane supported by
smooth surfaces at A and B as shown in Figure 4. Using the principle virtual work, find the
magnitude of the horizontal force P to be applied at the end A if the ladder is to be in
equilibrium. (10M)

UNIT-III
5. Determine the moment of inertia of the area shown in Figure 5. with respect to its centroidal
axes . (10M)

Figure 5
(OR)
6. Determine the coordinates of the centroid of the shaded area formed by the intersection of a
straight line (y = x) and a parabola (y = x2/a) as shown in Figure. (10M)

UNIT-IV
7. Calculate the mass moment of inertia Ixx of a homogeneous right circular cone with respect to
an axis X through the vertex parallel to the plane of the base. (10M)
(OR)
8. Determine the mass moment of inertia about its centroidal axis perpendicular to geometrical
axis of a cylindrical shaft 100mm diameter and 2.5m high. Take density as 8000kg/m3. (10M)

UNIT-V
9. Two bodies of weights 40N and 30N are connected by two ends of a light inextensible string,
which passes over a smooth pulley as shown in Figure 6. The weight 40N is placed on a
smooth inclined plane, while the weight 30N is hanging freely at the other end of the string.
Find (i) Acceleration of the system and (ii) Tension in the string. Take g = 9.8 m /s2. (10M)

(OR)
10. A body is moving in a rectilinear motion having displacement S = 2t+1.5t2-3t3. Determine the
displacement, velocity and acceleration after 4 seconds. (10M)
UNIT-VI
11. A golf ball is dropped from a height of 10 m on a fixed steel plate. The coefficient of
restitution is 0.894. Find the height to which the ball rebounds on the first, second and third
bounces (10M)
(OR)
12. Body of weight ‘W’ is suspended on a helical spring of spring constant ‘k’ as shown in
Figure. When it displaces in vertical direction by an amount ‘Δ’, what would be the energy
stored by the spring. (10M)
