SQQM1023 MANAGERIAL MATHEMATICS

FIRST SEMESTER 2021/2022 SESSION (A211)


GROUP PROJECT (60 MARKS - 25%)

Instructions:
1. Form a group of four to five members and elect a group leader.
2. This group project contains three problems.
3. Work as a group to prepare detailed solutions for all three problems.
4. Solution to each problem will be evaluated using the rubrics on page 3. Therefore, please
refer to the rubrics when you are writing the solutions.
5. For further guidance, group leader can arrange for an appointment with the lecturer.
6. Group leader must upload the solutions at UUM Online Learning by 13 January 2022.

Problem 1 (20 marks)

Choose a situation in your daily life that you think can be described mathematically using
function(s).
1. Describe the situation.
2. State the independent and dependent variables.
3. Formulate the function(s).
4. Sketch the function(s) by hand or using a mathematical software.
5. Describe the domain and range of the function(s).

Problem 2 (20 marks)

You are the Unit Production Manager in a company. Your team is responsible for budgets and
the business side of the production of goods/service offered by your company. Your main task is
to provide recommendations that can increase the profit of the goods/services to the upper
management of your company.
1. State the company/organization and goods or services offered by your company. You can
create a fiction company or you can use existing local or international companies.
2. Obtain the supply and demand data for the goods or services. You can create this data
using Excel or use real supply and demand data available on the internet.
3. Formulate the production model of the goods or services.

4. Analyse the production model and provide the necessary recommendation to the upper
management of the company.

Problem 3 (20 marks)

After graduation, you have been earning consistently for several months either through
employment or self-employment. Even though you are now moderately financially stable, you
must still plan your expenses carefully. You would like to purchase a product or service that you
have been eyeing for some time now.

1. State the product or service, the amount of money needed to purchase it, and when you
plan to purchase it.
2. Decide the type of investment or savings that you think can help you generate enough
money to purchase the product or service. Please use the current investments, savings
policies, securities etc. currently available in Malaysia.
3. Provide a detailed calculations of expected accumulated money in each
investment/saving up until the date of your planned purchase. Use the knowledge that
you have learned in Topic 4 of this course to prepare this calculations.
