LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER

"Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl was a very enjoyable and short story. The story
revolves around Mary Maloney, the loving wife of respected policeman Patrick
Maloney. Life is bliss for the couple until one day when something unexpected
happens.

When Patrick enters the house, he s acting strangely and is drinking heavier than
usual.

Patrick is sitting with Mary, just before he breaks the news, the time travels
tremendously slowly and there is an uncomfortable silence between Mary and Patrick.
This shows that there is something is not right and that there is tension between the
couple.

Maloney just thinks that Patrick is tired so she offers him some supper as usual. Patrick
stops Mrs. Maloney and tells her the bitter truth that he’s going to leave her. For a
second, she cannot believe this and thinks she has just imagined it. She moves to the
cellar to find something for the supper and takes out a big leg of lamb. Meanwhile
Patrick is standing in the hall telling her not to cook supper for him. Suddenly Mrs.
Maloney flings the lamb on the back of his head and kills him.

As she was a detective’s wife, she knows the punishment for what she did but she is
concerned for her unborn child because she is pregnant. Therefore, she rehearses
some dialogues to buy some vegetables from the nearby grocer and then she calls the
police and two of Patrick’s friends. She lies and tells the detectives that she found her
husband dead and she successfully deceives because of her good acting.

After the body is taken out, the police officers start investigating and looking for the
weapon which should be in the house or nearby. Mrs Maloney decides to stay and
serve the detectives. As a demonstration of her gratitude for the police’s hard work,
she offers them dinner. Mrs Maloney prepares the leg of lamb for them. The irony
here is that the policemen are saying that the weapon should be on the premises and
under their noses but they don’t know that the piece of lamb they are eating is actually
the weapon of the murderer.

THE EXCHANGE

"Hello, sir. How may I help you?"

"I'd like to return this alarm clock, please."

     "What's wrong with it?"

     "The alarm doesn't work."

     "How do you mean?"

     "The alarm makes no sound."

"Did you troubleshoot using the manual?"

     "Yes."

     "And it still didn't work?"

     "No."

"Okay. Do you have the receipt?"

"No. I can't find it anywhere."

     "Then I can't give you a refund."

"Oh no, you misunderstand. I don't want a refund. I just want to exchange it for one that
works."

"Okay. Do you have the original packaging?"

     "No. I threw it away."

"I can't do an exchange without the original packaging."

"It came in a plastic clamshell. I had to hack it open with a knife. I don't understand. Why do
you need the packaging?"

"Our policy for all exchanges is that the product be returned in its original packaging."
"It was just a load of ripped up plastic. Why would I keep that?"

"In case you needed to return the item."

"I didn't think an alarm clock would break after a few weeks. So you're telling me you can't
do anything to help?"

"To do anything I need some proof of purchase."

"I'm proof! I'm telling you now that I bought it here. In fact, I think you might have even
served me."

"Did you register the product warranty number online?"

<  2  >

     "No."

"Ah well, that's a problem. How did you pay for it? Cash or card?"

     "Cash."

"If you'd paid on card you could've got a statement from your bank proving you'd made a
purchase here and on what date."

     "Well, I paid cash."

"The thing is, other stores sell this brand too. You could've bought it anywhere."

"I could. But I didn't. I bought it here and it doesn't work and you owe me an alarm clock."

     "When did you buy it?"

     "A few weeks ago."

"Our exchange policy is twenty-one days so you might be out of warranty anyway."

"I bought it last month sometime. I don't remember the exact date."

"We've been selling this model for a couple of years now."

     "Are you saying I'm lying?"

"No, sir. I'm simply saying that you might have bought it twenty-two days ago and in that
case, even with a receipt and the original packaging, I wouldn't be able to do anything to help."

     "Nothing?"

     "No."

"So now I just have a faulty alarm clock forever?"

"Well, you could send it off to the manufacturer with a letter explaining the problem."
"It was made in China. That's more hassle than it's worth."

"Then I would suggest taking it to a repair shop."

"That sort of thing usually costs more than what you paid for something in the first place."

     "I know."

"Can I speak to the manager, please?"

<  3  >

     "The manager's off today."

"Then can I speak to whoever's in charge?"

     "You already are."

     "Is the manager in tomorrow?"

     "No."

     "When's he next in?"

     "It's a she."

     "Okay. When's she next in?"

     "Monday."

     "I'll come back Monday then."

"Very good. Can I help you with anything else today, sir?"

     "I doubt it."

"Okay. Would you like to open a store card? It's completely free and you get five percent off
every purchase."

     "No thank you."

"If you open one today you get a free gift."

     "What's the free gift?"

     "An alarm clock."

MATILDA

Meet Matilda. She lives with her mean parents. We mean, they're mean on
mean. They ignore her, which is extra tragic because she's shaping up to be a
super-genius. In spite of them, she teaches herself to read, and heads to the
local library, where Mrs. Phelps sets her up with a very advanced reading list.
Sure, Matilda's home life stinks. But she's a clever girl, so she decides to play
tricks on her parents whenever they behave badly. She plays three pranks,
gluing her dad's hat to his head, disguising a neighbor's parrot as a ghost, and
dying her dad's hair blonde. Yes, these are as awesome as they sound.
Then, Matilda starts going to school. On day one, her teacher Miss Honey
quickly realizes how smart Matilda is. Miss Honey even visits the headmistress,
the Trunchbull, to ask for help with Matilda, but the Trunchbull ain't havin' it. The
same thing happens when Miss Honey visits the Wormwoods. Meanwhile,
Matilda and her friend Lavender meet Hortensia, who tells them all about how
horrible the Trunchbull is. They see the Trunchbull throw a little girl through the
playground by her hair. Another day, the Trunchbull force-feeds a kid named
Bruce Bogtrotter an entire cake. This woman is bad news.
Lavender decides to prank the Trunchbull on a class visit. She captures a newt
and puts it into the Trunchbull's water glass. The Trunchbull blames Matilda for
the newt, which makes our girl so mad she pushes the Trunchbull's water glass
over with her mind. Whoa. After class, she tells Miss Honey what she did, and
then she gives her teacher a little magic show, which results in Miss Honey
inviting little Matilda to tea.
Turns out Miss Honey is really poor. She tells Matilda about her past. After her
mom died, her mean aunt straight up ruined her life. In fact, Miss Honey
suspects that the aunt might have killed her father, and stolen all Miss Honey's
money. Oh, and by the way, her aunt is the Trunchbull. We're totally serious.
Matilda decides to use her telekinetic powers to help Miss Honey, so she
practices and practices and practices until finally the day comes when she can
get some serious revenge.
The Trunchbull visits Miss Honey's class again. The Trunchbull is acting as
abusive as ever when she's interrupted by a piece of chalk that's writing on its
own. It writes that the Trunchbull has to stop cheating Miss Honey, give the
things she stole back, and get rolling. Or else. Needless to say, the Trunchbull
passes out cold. Wouldn't you?
Soon we find out the Trunchbull obeyed Matilda's instructions. Miss Honey
moves home and starts living a decent life again. And Matilda, who visits her
every day, gets moved up to the school's highest class. After moving up, Matilda
loses her powers. One day, she finds out that her parents are planning to move
to Spain, ASAP. Matilda doesn't want to go with them.
We'll come right out and tell you guys that this is a win-win. That's because
Matilda moves in with Miss Honey, where the two live happily (and smartly) ever
after.
Howl’s Moving Castle
Sophie, a hatter, is a responsible-yet-plain 18-year-old girl encounters by chance a mysterious
wizard named Howl. This encounter upsets an evil Witch, who later transforms Sophie into a
90-year-old woman. As the curse prevents her from telling anyone of her condition, Sophie
decides to leave and seek out a cure.

Along the way, Sophie meets upon the hill the scarecrow . She passes the mysterious Moving
Castle and enters it. At this point, she meets the enchanted fire demon named Calcifer, who
powers the castle and recognizes that Sophie has been cursed. Calcifer offers to break the
curse if Sophie helps him break the spell he's under. She also meets Howl's apprentice Markl.

When Howl appears, Sophie announces that she is the castle's new cleaning lady, hired by
Calcifer because he was sick of how dirty the castle was.

Meanwhile, in Sophie's home country, the beginning of a war has sparked against another
neighbouring town - following the disappearance of the other realm's Crown Prince. Slowly the
war begins to creep into Sophie's country itself. Howl receives summons from the King, who
orders his various assumed identities to fight in the war. However, Howl comes up with an idea
to send Sophie to pose as his mother, announcing what a coward he is and that he would be
useless. At the palace, Sophie runs into a asthmatic dog, Heen, who she thinks is Howl
undercover. She also meets the Witch of the Waste. They begin to race up the stairs. Once
they are inside the castle, the Witch of The Waste finds herself a place to sit down - only to
find her magical powers drained by Suliman as a punishment. This causes her to regress into a
harmless old woman with few memories of her past actions. Suliman tells Sophie that Howl
will meet the same fate if he does not contribute to the war. As Sophie vehemently protests
these measures, the Witch's spell temporarily weakens due to the love in her words. This
causes Sophie to change briefly to her younger self, then regress to her older persona.
Madame Suliman realizes Sophie's true relation to Howl and her romantic feelings towards
him. Howl then arrives to rescue Sophie, Suliman tries to entrap Howl, but with Sophie's help,
they escape.

Sophie learns that Howl is able to transform into a bird-like creature to interfere in the war,
but each transformation makes it more difficult for him to return to human form. Sophie fears
that Howl is preparing to leave them, as his remaining time as a human is limited, and he
returns to interfering in the war. Sophie's mother shows up under Suliman's control and leaves
behind a bag containing a "peeping bug" under her orders. The former Witch of the Waste
discovers it and promptly destroys the bug by tossing it into Calcifer who gets sick, rendering
him unable to conceal the castle.

A few hours later, the city is carpet-bombed by enemy aircraft while

Suliman's Blobbmen invade the hat shop. After arriving just in time to protect the shop from
the bombing, Howl draws the guards away after healing Calcifer. He tells Sophie he is not going
to run away anymore because he has something he wants to protect before leaving to
interfere with the war. Deducing that Howl must be saved, Sophie moves everyone out of the
castle and removes Calcifer from the fireplace, destroying the castle. She offers Calcifer some
of her braided hair to give him enough strength to power a portion of the castle. They head
toward Howl when the former Witch of the Waste discovers Howl's heart within Calcifer.
Sophie pours water on Calcifer to make her let go of the heart, making Calcifer lose his power.
The segment of the castle splits, and she and Heen fall down a chasm.

Making her way toward Howl's heart, Sophie enters through the door into Howl's childhood.
She sees Howl and Calcifer meet: Howl eats Calcifer, who gains his heart. Sophie finds Howl,
having now lost his human consciousness in bird form. They head back to the group, and
Sophie asks the Witch for Howl's heart. She gives it to her and places the heart back in Howl,
resurrecting him and freeing Calcifer. She kisses the scarecrow who reveals that he is actually
the missing prince. Heen shows the scene of their happy end to Suliman, and the war is finally
over. Howl, Sophie, and the others return home from the end of the war, flying high above the
bomber planes in a moving house.
