Summary - Culturally Responsive Leadership in Schools
Summation
In her book, Muhammad builds a strong case as to why and how teachers, administrators,
and districts can “restore equity and excellence in today’s classrooms”. Muhammad relies
on the literacy societies or “literacy institutions,” developed by Black people in the United
States to construct her framework, which relies on cultivating student identity, skills,
intellect, and criticality. This framework, she argues, can and should be used by teachers in
their classrooms, supported by administrators and instructional leaders, and embraced by
all communities because of its student-centered approach to learning--something that will
help teachers and schools address the different, yet important issues teachers face with
both largely homogeneous and heterogeneous student populations.
